GEH1049/GEC1015 PUBLIC HEALTH IN ACTION
GUIDELINES FOR GROUP PROJECT (Part 1) – 15% of Grade
Communicable diseases in our midst!
Instructions
As the first of two parts of your group project, this assignment requires you to examine a recent
local (Singapore) news article (from Jan 2020 to present) that features a communicable disease
apart from Covid‐19 and apply the Socio‐Ecological Model in your understanding of this public
health issue. You are advised to use 3 or 4 layers of the model (you don’t have to use all 5 layers!) to
best explain how and why the chosen public health issue has come about. You must also include a
reflective log at the end of your essay to document what you have accomplished as a result of each
week’s group discussion session, as well as follow‐up activities planned for the following week.
Assessment Objectives
This part of your group project will assess your ability to:
Recognize and identify pertinent public health issues of concern around you
Identify relevant real‐life situations and critically examine their public health implications
Apply the Socio‐Ecological model to explain real‐world public health phenomena
Work effectively and creatively in teams and communicate ideas clearly and convincingly
Structure of your report (Maximum word limit: 1200 words excluding the screenshot, citations,
captions and the reflective log at the end of your essay. You must adhere to the stipulated word
range for each section, and indicate the word count at the end of every section.)
a) Screenshot of news headline
Take a screenshot of the headline of one news article featuring any one communicable
disease in Singapore. Below your screenshot, you must include (i) the source of the full
article, (ii) the date of publication as well as (iii) a hyperlink where relevant. The screenshot
should be included at the very beginning of the report, before your responses to parts (b), (c)
and (d), at the top of the page. It should not take up more than a quarter of the page as only
the headlines are required. You are NOT allowed to use tabloid sources.
b) Description of public health issue
(100 to 150 words – heading required, included in word count)
Being as concise as possible, describe the communicable disease raised in the article. You
may use details from the article here, but a proper APA‐style citation of the article is
necessary.
c) Discussion of public health implications
(250 to 300 words – heading required, included in word count)
What are the public health implications of the communicable disease raised in the article?
Why are these concerns significant? You should also do research and use information from
credible and academic sources to support your discussion of the public health implications.
You should also demonstrate an understanding of the meaning, definition and scope of
‘public health’ covered at the beginning of the semester.

d) Explanation of the communicable disease using the Socio‐Ecological model
(700 to 750 words – heading required, included in word count)
Which layers of the model might best account for the public health issues caused by the
communicable disease you have identified? What factors within each layer may be
responsible for your observations? Explain in detail the possible factors that have given rise
to the situation, using relevant literature and research to support your claims. You do not
have to use every layer of the SE model; select only whichever you feel are important.
e) Reflective log (no word limit, table format up to a maximum of two pages)
At the very end of your report (after the reference list), you are also required to submit a
reflective log that documents the progress of your group project every week. This should be
done in a table format, and there is no word limit. This table should not exceed two pages.
Please use the format below to create your reflective log. You may also include details such
as challenges faced, how you tried to overcome them, member contributions etc.
