Bilingual Education Lesson Plan


Highschool Level (Grades 9-12)
Subject/Skill: Bilingual Education

Objectives
- Students will be able to understand the importance and meaning of bilingual
education through attentiveness of the PowerPoint presentation.
- Students will be able to identify how bilingual education impacts their life now
or in the future by creating a timeline.
- Overall, students will have a new found meaning and find their role within
bilingual education that will help them in other forms of education and their life
after education.
Materials
- Teacher: Internet access, computer/laptop, projector, timeline worksheet
- Students: Writing utensil and paper
Assessments/Independent Work
- Timeline: Students will create a timeline similar to the one in the presentation
that will allow them to brainstorm and analyze the implications of Bilingual
education on their lives and/or future. Lead into classroom sharing and/or
discussion.
- Exit ticket: Students will answer the three questions found in the presentation to
ensure they paid attention.
Procedures:
1. Instructor will state the objectives listed above.
2. Instructor will review class expectations: Today we will be going through a
powerpoint presentation that includes two assessments and a video. Your guys’
job is two pay attention and actively participate. One of the assessments is an
exit ticket which is based on the presentation so please make sure you are
attentive.
3. Instructor will begin the slides presentation: Slides 1 through 8.
4. Presentation will come to a halt and the instructor will hand out the timeline
worksheet and give students 15 minutes to work on their worksheet. Extra time
can be allotted for students to share.
5. Instructor will continue the slides presentation: Slides 9 through 14. (Slide 11
has a 5 minute video).
6. Exit ticket: Students will complete the exit ticket and the instructor will assign
a “turn in bin” so students can turn in the assignment before they leave the
class.
Conclusion
- What are the benefits of bilingual education, are there any disadvantages? Why
should we encourage bilingual education in the United States?
- Students after concluding the lesson will have met all objectives listed above.
- There will be an equal understanding amongst all in the classroom that will
involve personal impacts of bilingual education.
