their disabilities. Teachers need to ensure that accurate data is gathered about the different ways
in which students learn and then use that data to drive instruction. This will enable them to meet
the diverse needs of all students so that they will all be successful as well as help bridge learning
gaps. Red Rocks Community College (2020) believes that data also:
Provides teachers with the evidence they require in order to implement appropriate
teaching strategies with all children.
Enables teachers to provide the "right" activity for each child.
Provides information to all stakeholders.
Gives teachers knowledge of the child.
“Teachers are in the role of continually making assessments. They evaluate how the students are
performing. They look at how well the material being used is accepted by the students. They are
interested in how they’re teaching style works in the classroom. Throughout their day, they are
collecting data in the classroom to make assessments.” (Resilient Educator, 2022). Teachers can
use observations and learner analytics in order to gather data about their students.
When teachers observe the students in their classroom, it enables them to gain an understanding
of how they behave and think. Through observations, teachers will be able to understand how
they solve problems or complete their various tasks. It will also provide valuable information on
their interactions with each other. According to Jablon (n.d.), “Observation is a powerful
teaching resource”. When teachers are able to teach with their eyes, ears, and minds open to
what is happening around them, observation makes them more effective teachers. Observation
has the following benefits as outlined by Jablon (n.d.):
Teachers are able to have a better knowledge of students so that they can build positive
relationships with them. They will feel safe and secure and will be more open to learning.
Teachers will be provided with the relevant information they need in order to make
decisions about students’ learning.
Teachers’ knowledge of childhood behavior and development will be enhanced.
Teachers will be able to gather evidence about students’ progress in order to meet
curriculum goals.
Teachers will understand what students have accomplished so that information can be
shared with all stakeholders.
It will add interest and excitement to their work when they are curious about students.
Another powerful tool that teachers can use is learner analytics. “Learner analytics is the
collection of data about a student’s academic performance and analyzing it to derive trends and
patterns that reveal areas which need improvement.” (Dani, 2019). Learner analytics can be used
in many different ways to benefit students in an inclusive K-12 classroom. Teachers can gain an
understanding of how students are progressing, who can assist them when they require support
with a specific topic, and the kind of learning environment they prefer. Dani (2019) also believes
that learner analytics can be used in the classroom by teachers to:
Keep track of students who are weak academically.
Monitor students’ level of engagement.
Draft customized lessons to cater to the different learners.
Measure and make comparisons of students’ performance.
Redesign lessons for individual students.
Norwood (n.d.) has outlined the many benefits of incorporating learner analytics into the
classroom:
Teachers can identify students who are at risk.
Can be used to inform decision-making and funding.
Enables teachers to modify teaching strategies.
It can improve efficiency and productivity as well as enable educators to respond
effectively to any challenges in education.
Not only do teachers benefit from using learning analytics but students can also benefit in a
number of ways as outlined by Nielsen (2019):
Learning analytics can also immediately recognize and diagnose students who are struggling and
provide them with immediate interventions which will increase students’ motivation and success.
(Welsh, 2020). When learner analytics and observations are employed appropriately, student
learning outcomes will be improved as well as resources will be effectively and efficiently used.
Both strategies are core learning strategies of the 21st Century and will ensure that the quality of
teaching and learning will be improved as well as enhance the learning experiences for all
students.
