EXPERIMENT-NO.-03-Constant Weight

This document describes an experiment to determine the constant weight of crucibles. Crucibles are heated in an oven at 110°C and weighed repeatedly until successive weights agree within 0.0005g, indicating constant weight has been reached. The procedure involves preparing and labeling crucibles, preheating the oven, placing crucibles in the oven for 1 hour, cooling in a desiccator for 1 hour, and weighing crucibles on an analytical balance. Weights are recorded in a data table and the difference between successive weights is calculated to check for constant weight. Factors that could affect achieving constant weight and potential sources of error are discussed.

EXPERIMENT NO. 03
CONSTANT WEIGHT

I. Introduction

To quantify an analyte, all gravimetric studies depend on a final weight determination.

Gravimetric analysis is potentially one of the most accurate procedure of analytical techniques since
weight can be measured more precisely than practically any other fundamental attribute. These
procedures, which are among the oldest analytical techniques, could be drawn-out and tiresome. It
may be necessary to thoroughly treat samples to get rid of interference-causing elements. It is then
weighed and heated once more for around 30 minutes. As a result, only a relatively small number of
gravimetric techniques are being used in environmental analysis.
Every solid has a particular affinity for water, and they all have the potential to take in moisture
from the lab air. Reagents are referred to as hygroscopic if they quickly absorb water. Deliquescent
substances are those that soak up so much water that they dissolve in it and create a concentrated
solution (e.g., sodium hydroxide, trichloroacetic acid). When these materials are exposed to air, their
weight will keep rising. For this reason, a sample must be dried to a stable, repeatable weight before
undergoing many different sorts of scientific operations (i.e., absorbed moisture removed to some
standard, low level). This is particularly crucial for gravimetric techniques. Typically, the sample is
dried in an oven between 103 and 110 degrees Celsius for about an hour before being allowed to cool
to room temperature. The sample is cooled and weighed a second time. The procedure is repeated
until successive weighings agree to within 0.3 mg.

II. Learning Objectives

1. To be able to determine the weight of dry crucible using oven.
2. To be able to determine the effects of using oven and desiccator in drying crucible.

V. Methodology

A. Preparation of Crucible and cover and Pre-heating of oven

1. Prepare the crucible and cover
2. Label the crucible as well as he cover.
3. Pre-heat the oven at 75 C for 15 minutes to 20 minutes.

B. Heating Process
1. After pre-heating, set the oven at 110 C.
2. Once the temperature is at 110 C, place the crucible and cover using crucible
tong inside the oven. (Make sure that the crucible and cover has an equal
distribution of spaces inside the oven.)
3. Heat the crucible and cover for one hour.

C. Cooling Process
1. After an hour of heating, transfer the crucible and cover using crucible tong
inside the desiccator with desiccant.
2. Cool the crucible and cover for an hour.

D. Weighing
1. After cooling, weigh the crucible and cover using crucible tong at the analytical
balance.
2. Repeat the procedure of heating, cooling and weighing until constant weight is
obtained (at least 3 consecutive of constant data)
3. Record all data using your data table or notebook.
4. Compute for the percent error in mass. Check for gross careless error if
possible.
% Error = 2nd weight – 1st weight / 2nd weight x 100%

VIII. Conclusion

IX. Question Analysis

1. What are the factors to consider in getting the correct constant weight of the crucible and
cover?

2. Where do you think the errors lie that despite of following the procedure correctly
constant weight can’t still be achieved?
