Stiffness Modifiers As Per Is Code-Etabs Application

This document discusses stiffness modifiers for reinforced concrete structural elements as per Indian code IS 1893 and CSI recommendations. For seismic load analysis without load factors, IS 1893 specifies modifiers of 0.7 for column and beam moment of inertia and 1 for other properties. IS 16700 specifies modifiers of 0.7-1 for columns/beams and 0.25-0.9 for walls/slabs under seismic and gravity loads, to better model cracking and deterioration effects. The modifiers are applied in structural analysis software like ETABS to account for reduced stiffness.

NOTE: No stiffness modifier has been mentioned in IS1893 (Part 1):2016 code for design of elements.

STIFFNESS MODIFIERS AS PER IS 16700:2017- FOR SEISMIC LOAD (FOR DRIFT CHECK AND RCC ELEMENT DESIGN)

ETABS TERMINOLOGY COLUMN BEAM

Cross-section (axial) Area 1 1

Bending m11 Direction 0.7* 0.25 1
Bending m22 Direction 0.7* 0.25 1
Bending m12 Direction 0.7* 0.25 1
Shear v13 Direction 1 1 1
Shear v23 Direction 1 1 1
Mass 1 1 1
Weight 1 1 1
*To avoid excessive longitudinal reinforcement, walls may not be designed for out-of-plane bending. In this case, use
a small modifier say 0.1 for m11, m22 and m12 so numerical instabilities could be avoided.
*f12 can be considered as 0.7 if you expect deterioration of shear stiffness and want to be realistic in your modelling.
