EVIDENCE OF CORE COMPETENCIES ASSIGNMENT


Discuss 1 piece of evidence for each heading below from your high school years. Identify which Core competency(ies) your evidence
relates to. Describe each piece of evidence and indicate how it demonstrates your abilities in the related core competency.

COMMUNICATION Communication ability is one of the core competencies. It's the top priority
❏ Connect and engage with others and the most important. In my own experience, while learning in school, we
❏ Acquire, interpret, and present information have to finish a project as a team. It is about the history of mathematics. We
❏ Collaborate to plan don't have lots of time to finish in school, so we have to do it during winter
❏ Carry out activities break. During winter break, we have to communicate every day for the
❏ Explain/recount and reflect on experiences and information we have to put into the project. During the process, we
accomplishments communicate a lot. We keep changing some special words and some different
knowledge for the project. Keep changing the design of the PowerPoint and
add some pictures to connect the information. There is no gain without
labour, on that project, we got full marks. This is the reason that
communication is very important.

COLLABORATING When I haven't transferred to Burnaby Central Secondary School, I was a


❏ Recognize others’ perspectives member of the student council at Port Moody secondary in Grade 10. The
❏ Cooperate with others for specific purposes student council has to take care of all the events that are going to be in
❏ Contribute during group activities the schools. I attended all the meetings on Friday to help with school
❏ Share roles and responsibilities to achieve goals events, such as the school Christmas event and dancing event. If there are
any problems, we can exchange opinions. Members of the student
collaborate and solve all the problems together and find great and perfect
results. Remember one time during Christmas week and we have to
decorate the school as a team. It was very fun and very interesting. In
April, there was a school dance, and my duty was to plan and set up the
venue. We have to contact the DJ that is going to play the songs. We have
to decorate the place and see whether there is anything that we can sell
at the dance. That was a very interesting and exciting experience. As a
member of the student council, when the result is perfect, you will feel
very great. This is my best teamwork experience.

CREATIVE THINKING I have imagination and thinking that are different from ordinary people
❏ Generate ideas and concepts that are novel and and can trip the old framework. This kind of imagination that I have used
innovative in the electronic class and in my own life. In electronic 12, we have a
❏ Demonstrate open mindedness and flexibility tournament about sumo bot. The purpose of this tournament is to let the
❏ Use imagination student create a different and our own bot. We have to accept other
people's ideas and opinions to create our team's project. I also have
provided some ideas for the robot. The final result came out well, and we
got the champion.

CRITICAL & REFLECTIVE THINKING I came from Taiwan to Canada to study. The way that Taiwanese parents
❏ Analyze and critique teach their kids is to force their kids to be elite. The traditional thinking of
❏ Use experience to set goals the Taiwanese people is that they have to go to a good high school and a
❏ Problem solve good university. The pressure is on. After three years in Canada, there are
❏ Question and investigate some critical thinking emerged new to my personality, and I kept thinking
❏ Design products based on observation, experience, and about the correctness of things. These high school years let me concept of
specific need independent thinking and self-goal setting. During this period, I searched
❏ Understand events and address issues for some online materials and learned some things in real life. I'm pretty
sure where my goals are, and I've corrected my family's expectations. I'm
pretty sure which university I'm going to and which job I'm doing in the
future. Ultimately, my goal is near and near. The educational environment
here has fostered my critical and reflective thinking.
PERSONAL AWARENESS & RESPONSIBILITY Self-regulate; letting you know your feeling and what you should do,
❏ Self-regulate which can make you have some responsibilities. It is continuity. Before
❏ Make constructive and ethical decisions high school, I lacked this concept, but after being in high school for four
❏ Set goals and monitor progress years, I found out you have to do everything by yourself. Subconsciously,
❏ Ensure physical and emotional well-being you will set some goals for yourself. For example, I will set some progress
❏ Demonstrate self-respect for my homework and some plans for reviewing. Let everything be sorted
as much as possible. Won't let my emotional and physical have too much
pressure. Be responsible for my family and me.

POSITIVE PERSONAL & CULTURAL IDENTITY My country is unique. It is a country that didn't get any acceptance from
❏ Knowledge of one's family background, heritage, the world. It is TAIWAN. My country has kept lots of excellent Chinese
language, and values traditional cultures, including morality, heritage, and Mandarin. But my
❏ Self-awareness country didn't get any respect or acceptance from China. Even then, my
❏ Personal strengths and abilities country has to face military intimidation every day. In school, my Chinese
❏ Contribute to the well-being of your family, community, friends and I won't talk about politics because we don't want any trouble
and society and some misunderstandings. This is because we grow up in different
environments. I will still be peace to my Chinese friends and look at some
advantages from them. Mutual tolerance will make the world better.

SOCIAL AWARENESS & RESPONSIBILITY I used to be in a club called Green team. It is a club that cleans the
❏ Contribute to community community around the school. Although I'm not a citizen of Canada, I
❏ Care for the environment think it is my responsibility to make sure the environment is clean. During
❏ Solve problems in peaceful ways the weekend, we always walk around in the park, and if we see some
❏ Value diversity & inclusivity garbage on the floor or in the river, we will go clean it up. It was a very
❏ Building healthy relationships nice experience because I made lots of friends, made a strong consensus
❏ Empathize with others and a good relationship. We had made lots of wonderful memories. From
this experience, I had sorted out a conclusion. When you litter in the park,
please be sense. This is an environment in that every people are living.
This is not your own world.

REFLECTION:
1. With which core competency (Communication, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Positive Personal &
Cultural Identity, Social Awareness and Responsibility) do you feel most confident and explain why?

The most confident core competency I'm proud of is communication. The reason is I really like to talk to
people. Being able to communicate effectively with friends and teammates is probably the most important
of all life skills. It allows me to pass the information on to friends or teammates and understand what
teammate's opinions or thoughts. Also, communicating usually happens in a team. Well communication
will result in cooperation. If having well communication skills will help my future career.

2. Which core competency do you feel you need to develop further over the next year? Explain why?

The core competency I need to improve is critical & reflective thinking because I often make some
mistakes in my personal life, and I will forget to improve myself with different skills or styles. I often
needed someone to point out my mistakes and tell me to change my way. Also, sometimes I am very
subjective. I will focus on one way. I won't think twice. It will affect my self-reflective thinking. I often
personal subjective consciousness over critical and reflective thinking. I lack well-thinking. This is the
mistake that I often make. This happened personally, not in a team.
3. Identify three steps that you can take to develop that core competency both within the school, as well as
outside of the school.

a) Observation:
If I'm in school, I can take a look at friends' advantages and find abilities that I lack. Why could people
do things perfectly? But I can't? Continue to improve my disadvantages. Let myself have a special core
competency.

b) Learning:
Parents, classmates, and friends are like mirrors. They will point out my lack of abilities, but I have to
through my self-learning, improve my core competency and value. Core competency didn't born with
you. It has to keep learning and practicing to gain all of them. In my own opinion, learning is very
important for me.

c) Fulfill:
To prove my core competencies are functional, I will try to use to at any time or any place. I must put
into action to verify. If it is not working out, I have to find a way to improve that. While core
competencies are unique in each area. I must have to unify it out. This is the ability of life. In the
future, it will be very helpful, not even in the workplace but also in your life. Core competencies are
often interrelated. Although learning is created core competencies' foundation, I think to put into
action is way more important.
