Answer: A predicate is the part of a sentence, or a clause, that tells what the subject

is doing or what the subject is.

2. Explain the definition of “deixis”. (15 points)

Answer: Deixis refers to a word or phrase that shows the time, place or situation a

speaker is in when talking. Also known as deictic expressions (or deictics), they

typically include pronouns and adverbs such as 'I', 'you', 'here', 'there', and tend to be

used mostly where the context is known to both the speaker and the person spoken to.

a. Predicator
b. Argument
c. Degree of predicate
d. Deictic words
e. Reported speech

a. predictor is someone who predicts something in order to convince others of what it is

meant to be

b. Argument is a written opinion, concept, and opinion to convince the reader or the intended

e. Reported speech is a report by one speaker or writer of words spoken, written, or thought

by another.

4. Give 2 examples of one-place predicate & 2 examples of two-place predicate in

sentences. (20 points)

Answer: One-place predicate: predicate that requires in one argument. Adjective

usually one-place predicate, e.g.: happy, cool, etc. For example: She is happy. “She”

is an argument and “happy” is one-place predicate which has the function as an

adjective. This sentence is intransitive verbs, or it can be called one-argument

predicate. Argument names an actor that carries out the action (predicate).

Predicates tell what an argument did.

Two-place predicate: a verb or predicate with two arguments, namely as a subject

and an object). For example: Jane teaches English. “Jane” is an argument as a

subject in a sentence; “teaches” is two-place predicate which has the function as a

verb; and “English” is an argument as an object in a sentence. Predicate is as a link

between one argument as a subject and another argument as an object.
