Introductory Message
For the learner
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
Coordinate System!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used
to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner is
capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and skills at
your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
iv
What I Have Learned This includes questions or blank
sentence/paragraph to be filled in to process
what you learned from the lesson.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use your Science activity notebook.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate
to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

What I Need to Know
Latitude and longitude are the coordinate systems that are used in locating
any places on the globe or map. Using GPS, compass, maps and radars are
examples of equipment which can help us locate things and places. Getting lost is
already not a problem, it is now easy for us to locate places compared in the past.
With so many places on Earth, how is it possible to locate one of them? For
example, if you want to go to Caluya Shrine in Sapang Dalaga or Divine Mercy
Shrine in El Salvador, it would be hard to describe its location, but given with the
coordinates of the shrines, you will be able to find it.
So, how do we locate places using the map especially places that we don’t
know? To answer this question, you have to learn about latitude and longitude.
After going through this module, you are expected to demonstrate how
places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system. (S7ES-Iva-1A)

Q1. How many types of lines have you noticed? Describe each line in terms of
their position based on the globe.
6
What is It
Now that you have studied about our globe, you will notice that there are
two different lines. The horizontal line is what we call the latitude. At most, there
are five latitudes with special names which are listed in the table below.
Northern Arctic
Table 1. Special Names of Latitude Hemisphere Circle

23.5° S Tropic of Capricorn Tropic of
Southern Capricorn
60.5° N Arctic Circle
Hemisphere Antarctic
60.5° S Antarctic Circle Circle

Now that you know the different names of our latitude, take note of the
Equator which is the center of our globe. It is the reference line in determining the
latitude and the basis for identifying northern and southern hemispheres.
7
Aside from the horizontal lines, there are also vertical lines which are called
the longitude. The starting point for longitude is the Prime Meridian, which is at
longitude 0° or at Greenwich, London, United Kingdom.
Greenwich, London,
United Kingdom

Longitude
To the right of the Prime Meridian or the eastern hemisphere, the longitude
is written as 15° E, 30° E and so on. To the left or the western hemisphere, the
longitude is written as 15° W, 30° W and so on.
As you can see, the Prime Meridian is the reference line in determining the
longitude and the basis for understanding whether a certain place is found in the
eastern hemisphere or western hemisphere.
8
The location of a certain place can be described by using latitude and
longitude. The intersection point between the latitude and the longitude of a
certain place to find its location is called coordinate.
The figure below shows the city which is near to 15°N and 120°E is
Lingayen, as well as 15°N and 115°E where the South China Sea is found, and
also in 13°N and 124°E where the Pacific Ocean is found.
