Compass is a tool that can be used for

drawing circles or arcs, or parts of circles. T -
square is used by draftsmen primarily as a
guide for drawing horizontal lines on a
drafting table. Compass and T-square are
both classified as drawing tools. Drawing
tools are used especially for mechanical
presentation activities. Other common
drawing tools are triangles, triangular scale,
pencil sharpener or pen knife, drawing
templates, protractor, dusting
brush, sandpaper and others.
DRAWING TOOLS

Masking tape can be used to hold

blueprint or drawing work to the drawing
board. Tracing paper, a semi-transparent
paper, is used to trace an image or create
overlays or copy an aspect of a drawing.
Masking tape and tracing paper are example
of drawing materials. These are items that
are consumable. Bond paper, drawing
pencils, pen, ink, erasers and others are
some common drawing materials.

DRAWING MATERIALS

Lastly, drawing machine not only assist the

rendering of life-like drawings but also to
create complex patterns and geometrical
drawings impossible for a single human.
Drawing machine along with drawing table
and stool are considered as drawing
equipment are essential in producing
drawing tasked that requires mechanical
manipulation. These are usually very
expensive.

DRAWING EQUIPMENT

Since most of these drawing tools, materials and equipment are quite costly, it is very
important for you to properly handle and take good care of them.

Messy Missy
by: Rafael E. Martinez

Missy is a high school student. She has exemplified good values and considered by many
as a role model. Aside from being a consistent-honor student, she is also well-rounded. She
participates in many youth activities. Aside from being a member of their school dance troupe
that focuses on Filipino folk dance, she is also the leader of their school’s Youth for
Environment in Schools (YES) Organization that promotes environmental awareness among
students. She also volunteers herself as a peer teacher to students who have difficulty in their
subjects and lastly, an active choir member in their church.

But as the saying goes, nobody is perfect. Just like other teens she has some flaws or
shortcomings too. She is not really organized and neat when it comes to her belongings
especially with her drawing tools and materials. Missy loves to draw but she often forgets to
clean up her working area. She sometimes leaves her things on the floor. Not only once that
she has broken her tools by accidentally stepping into it. And so, she was tagged by her
mother as Messy Missy.

After a long day, Missy again has left her drawing things unorganized. At the middle of
the night, Missy is awakened by some strange noise. The sounds seem to come from her
working table. When she takes a peek, she is surprised that her drawing tools are talking!

“Missy often used us for cutting paper!” says by the ruler.

“ She chews and bites us sometime!” the pencil and eraser exclaim.
“ We have lots of creases and folds because she places us in her crowded bag!” cry by the
papers.
“ She even holds us without washing her hands!” says by the triangle.
“ She often leaves us uncap!” the pen adds.
“ These have to stop!” firmly says by the T-square. “Let’s leave her and find a new place to
stay.”

6
“No, don’t leave me!” Missy interrupts. Hurriedly, she approaches them and begs not to
leave her. “I promise to change,” she says. “I cannot draw and work without all of you. Please
forgive me!” Missy continues. But it seems that her drawing tools and materials cannot hear
her. They walk out of the door.

NO!!!! Missy shouts until she is wakened. “Thank God it’s just a dream,” she mumbles.
Abruptly, she gets out of the bed and fixes her things.

From then on, Missy tries to be more organized and neat with her belongings. She takes
good care of her drawing tools and materials. She doesn’t leave her working place untidy
because she does not want her bad dream to be real. At last, Messy Missy no more.

Directions: List five improper ways on handling drawing tools and materials shown in the story.

What is It

Maintaining Hand Tools, Drawing Tools,

Equipment, and Paraphernalia

The story in the previous activity shows some common malpractices on handling drawing
tools and materials.

Drawing tools often have small pieces and usually made of breakable materials, hence
they need to be handled properly.

Here are the important practices that you must observe in maintaining and handling your
drawing tools and materials.

7
Do’s

• Inspect your tools and materials before using them.

• Wash your hands with clean water before and after handling tools and
materials.
• Maintain cleanliness in your working area.
• Use T-square in drawing horizontal lines.
• Use triangles in drawing vertical lines.
• Hold the compass in its handle when creating circles.
• If not in use, hung the T-square on a wall by inserting the hole to a nail.
• Always use sharp pencils.

Don’ts

• Avoid dropping your tools and materials.

• Never use measuring tools for cutting paper.
• Never use compass for picking objects.
• Never use the triangular scale in drawing lines
• Avoid throwing tools to anybody.
• Avoid biting or chewing your tools.

Aside from the reminders mentioned above, drawing tools and materials should always be
kept clean and neat. Follow the pointers below in cleaning and storing your drawing tools and
materials.
• In cleaning pencils, markers, measuring tools and stencils, use clean dump cloth
in cleaning the surfaces then wipe them with dry cloth before keeping.
• Erasers are cleaned by rubbing them against a clean piece of paper until the
black smudge has disappeared.
• I n cleaning your drafting brush, run your fingers through to remove the dirt.
• Roll up your drafting papers into a tight roll and secure them with a rubber band
at each end. Place the roll into a drafting tube for storage.
• Store your tools by placing the same items together. You may use pouch or
organizer trays.
• In storing pens, make sure that they are close properly to prevent leakage.
- Gel pens and specialty markers are advised to be stored horizontally to
keep the ink from leaking out of the end of the pens and to keep the ink from
drying. You may use the table drawers or pen box or pouch.

- Basic ballpoint pens and felt-tipped markers can be store vertically in pen
holder and mugs, or horizontally, in pouches and drawers.

8
Like other objects, drawing materials and tools are often made from chemicals. They can
be sometimes toxic and may cause physical injury by inhalation, ingestion or physical contact.
Observe the following safety standards in doing drawing activities.
• To avoid accidental ingestion, do not eat or drink in the work area.
• Familiarize yourself with substances that are dangerous. Be aware of substances you
might be allergic to.
• When using liquid drawing media such as ink try using those that are alcohol-based
as they are less toxic.
• Never paint your body with markers or drawing inks.
• Never put drawing tools in your mouth.
• Make sure that your working place is well-lighted.
• Keep your hair tidy so that it will interfere while drawing.
Drawing tools and materials are essential in making a quality work. Considering that they
are pricey and delicate, you should always take care of them and maintain their usability.
