3.2. Heat Treatment

3.2.1 Heat treating equipment qualification and calibration

Furnaces shall be calibrated no less than once a year or when a furnace is moved, repaired or
rebuilt. The practice for qualification of heat-treating equipment shall be one of the following:

3.2.1.1 API 6A annex for qualification of heat-treating equipment or other equivalent

internationally recognized standard.

3.2.1.2 Manufacturers’ written specifications including acceptance criteria, which are not less
stringent than the procedures identified above.

3.2.2 Temperature monitoring

The material temperature shall be measured by use of either a contact surface thermocouple
or a heat sink as described in API 6A, ISO 10423 or equivalent international standard.

3.2.3.All heat treatment shall be carried out in accordance with written procedures. Temperature,
time at temperature and method of cooling must be reported for each cycle.

3.2.4.The quench media shall be one of the following:

3.2.4.1. Oil

3.2.4.2. Polymer

3.2.4.3. Interrupted water, water or other water equivalent quench.

3.2.5.The temperature of the water or the equivalent quench media (cooling rate approximately that
of water) shall not exceed 40⁰C (100⁰F) at the start of the quench. For bath type quenching,

the temperature of water or equivalent quench media shall not exceed 50⁰C (120⁰F) at the
completion of quench. The temperature range for other quenching media shall meet
manufacturer’s written specification.

3.2.6.If water quench is used, material must be examined by ultrasonic testing per NDE-31 (for
solids) or NDE-35 (for hollows). UT demonstrated by comparable industry standards like
ASTM A388 (for solids) or ASTM E213 (for hollows), with the acceptance criteria per API 6A
PSL3 or PSL4, is acceptable.

3.3. Mechanical Properties

3.3.1 The test coupons to be cut from the longitudinal and transverse direction using ER (Equivalent
Round) model as described in API 6A. The mechanical properties shall be measured in
accordance with ASTM A370 or equivalent standard, and shall confirm to following
requirements.

3.3.2 Mechanical testing and impact samples shall be taken from the mid-radius or mid-wall as
applicable in longitudinal direction. For bars that will trepan after heat treatment, the samples
may be taken at the smallest ID location of the finished part.

3.3.3 If only mechanical properties measured at 1” below the surface are available, this is
acceptable if a hardness traverse shows that hardness at mid-radius meets the minimum
specified. The hardness wafer shall be removed at least 6” from the heat treated end of the
bar, one bar per heat per heat treatment batch.

3.3.4 A hardness test shall be made on each bar or billet before machining. All bars shall be within
the Brinell hardness limitations established above.

3.4 NDE Requirements

3.4.1 Material must be examined by UT per NDE-31 for solids and NDE-35 for hollows, after final
heat treatment. Comparable accepted industry standards like ASTM E213 (for tubing), ASTM
A388 (for heavy forgings), ASTM E428 etc. is acceptable with the acceptance criteria not less
stringent than API 6A PSL3. Mill UT is acceptable when final heat treatment is performed by
the producing mill.
