GED109 - Module Paper 2

This document discusses three topics related to discrimination based on gender and society: 1) stereotypes faced by women in society, such as earning less money than men for the same work, 2) the hardships faced by homosexual individuals due to religious beliefs labeling homosexuality as sinful, and 3) debates around the ethics of gender reassignment surgery and factors like a person's age. Overall, the document argues that a lack of understanding between people leads to problems like violations of human rights for gender and sexual minorities.

Gender and society

Module Paper 2

We live in a time of progression, where innovation is the leading solution to

global and economical development, where people are more open-minded to changes

within their society than the people back then. And is this type of progression that

separates the people of the past from people of today, however that doesn’t mean that

progress is well received by every people. There are still some with the ideals of the

past, who still cling to this mentality of separation and discrimination, whether by race,

gender, or sex. because of this we as a society cannot achieve true progression, that is

why within this paper we will discuss three different topics of discrimination. The

stereotypes of women within the society, the hardships of homosexuals, and the idea of

gender reassignment surgery. Maybe after this discussion, we could be more

understanding of the situation and be at least how to change it.

Sexism is a term used to discriminate against the opposite sex – usually

against women – but do not confuse sex with gender both of those terms are essentially

different. As sex pertains to the permanent feature of a person, usually sex is more akin

to genetics and DNA which are more or less unchangeable. Gender on the other hand

is more fluid and is more related to the psychology of one own identity. According to

Global Citizens on average a woman only makes about 70% for every 1 dollar a man is
given and not only that they work as much if not more than men. (Glick, 2015) With this,

we could see the disparity of sexism among women and as such causes a lot of

problems within the community like the division between men and women.

Homosexuality is another serious topic within the society as opposed to sexism

against women, homosexuality is by far the most discussed in terms of its popularity

amongst citizens. Homosexuality is a term used for someone – A man – To have a

sexual or infatuation with the same sex. Religion would be a major key factor in

denouncing homosexuality as some might have guessed. According to Jehovah’s

witnesses, several chapters within the bible state the act of homosexuality is an act of

sin, like “Avoid sexual immorality! Sexual immorality is a sin that affects one's own body,

unlike other sins which are external to one's body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18). Though I would

say that the bible doesn’t condemn hatred toward homosexuality, but rather this quote is

used for the ancient times when our population was in the millions, however, some

people’s disgust of homosexuality stems from reading the bible or being religious.

There is also a discussion about the ethics of gender reassignment surgery

whether age is a key factor in the mentality of these individuals to do the surgery and or

the accessibility of the surgery. The blog is done by Riverdale, that age is more

prevalent in the transition, where the older they get the more they get insecure about

their bodies which leads to depression and suicidal tendencies. They also have quoted

from the AMA Journal of Ethics, where more than 25% transgenders that answered the

survey were denied hormonal treatment, which they concluded the inaccessibility of

people and a violation of the human rights act. (Nicholson-Flynn, 2016)

The similarities between the problems that I discussed are the violation of

human rights. I believe that these problems are violating their human rights, which in

turn creates misunderstanding and tension within the community. We, humans, are

flawed creatures, and we are also prone to being prideful because this creates a

stubborn attitude that with the ideals of others may create friction and could lead to

much more trouble. That is why I believe that we must be more understanding and

open-minded so that these sorts of problems could be avoided in the future.

I used to think that problems concerning sex and gender are easily be solved

like any other problems we face. after learning key concepts in Module 2 of GED109, I

now think that problems are more connected to the inability of people to understand one

another which creates these such problems. I also now think that problems like this are

more serious than I initially thought and have an impact on individuals. I now think that

human rights are a more complicated thing and require more extensive learning and

understanding the human rights to better avoid violating them in the future.
