FINAL EXAMINATION SECOND SEMESTER 2021

ME 155 POWER PLANT ENGINEERING MAY 19, 2021

1. A hydroelectric plant has 20 MW generator with an efficiency of 96%. The generator is

directly coupled to a vertical Francis type hydraulic turbine having an efficiency of 89%.
The total gross head on the turbine is 150 m while the loss of head due to friction is 4% of
the gross head. The runaway speed is not to exceed 750 rpm. Determine the flow of water
through the turbine in m3/min.

2. A gas turbine plant works between the fixed absolute temperature limits 300 K and 900 K;
the absolute pressure limits being 1.03 bar and 4.12 bar. The adiabatic efficiency of the
blower is 80% and that of the turbine is 85%. Determine the actual thermal efficiency of
the plant and the power developed if the fuel consumption is 0.45 kg/sec. Take k for air
and gases = 1.4; cp for air and gases = 1.047 kJ/kg-K and calorific value of fuel = 41,870
kJ/kg.

3. A rectangular block foundation of an engine installation has the following data:

Weight of engine - - - - 1,818.00 kg
SABP - - - - - 86.00 Mtons/sq. mtr.
Bedplate dimension - - - 8.50 mtr. x 5.50 mtr.
Assume that the distance between edges of bedplate and foundation to be 300 mm,
determine the minimum depth of the foundation so that it will be safe against direct
settlement. Also determine the number of bags of Portland cement, and the volume of
aggregates to be used. Make a sketch of the installation.

4. The boiler of a tobacco processing plant burns 4,555 kg per hour of hard black coal with
27% excess air and a heating value of 24,887 j/g. The net stack effect is 25.615 cm of
water. Ambient temperature is 32 OC and average gas temperature is 280 OC. Atmosphere is
1 Bar. Forced draft fan mechanical efficiency is 60%. Determine the minimum stack height
and the forced draft fan motor capacity of the boiler installation shown below if the
following draft losses in cm of water are considered:
Boiler = 0.508
Superheater = 6.35
Economizer = 4.32
Precipitator = 1.9
Stack Diameter = 200 cm

Breeching = 1.65

Something to ponder on:

It is in the perspective, when the Israeli soldiers saw GOLIATH they said: “He’s so big we cannot possibly beat him”. But when DAVID saw him, he simply
said: “He’s so big I cannot possibly miss him”. . .
