FIELD STUDY 1: Observations of Teaching - Learning in Actual School Environment

The document provides details of the student's observation of a science class taught by their cooperating teacher, Mr. Redante Policarpio. The student observed how Mr. Policarpio established classroom routines, formulated clear lesson objectives and engaging learning activities, and selected appropriate assessment tools aligned with the objectives. The student also observed how Mr. Policarpio developed his lesson, starting with stating the objectives, reviewing the previous lesson, engaging students with open-ended questions, and ending by having a student summarize. An assessment was administered after via Kahoot to evaluate student learning. The student reflected that they would also choose the same activities and assessments as they were effective in monitoring student understanding and progress.

MODULE 4: CLASS ACTIVITIES

A. ASSISTING THE TEACHER WITH A TEACHER’S TOOL BOX

My Target:

While I observe different classes, I will be able to identify the subject matter,
lesson objectives, learning activities, assessment tools, and over-all teaching-
learning process.

My Tool:

FIELD STUDY 1: Observations of
Teaching - Learning in Actual School
Environment

Eldy Owen T. Layno

Instructor

Institute of Arts, Sciences and Teacher Education

BSED SCIENCE 4 –A

As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused
observation.
Observation:

Name of Cooperating Teacher Observed: Mr. Redante Policarpio

Grade/Year Level: 10 Subject Area: Science 10
School Address: San Nicolas, Dapdap, Bamban, Tarlac

1. Principles in classroom routines established

Based on my observation, the established principles in classroom routines are

the teachers starts the class with an opening prayer, followed by asking the
students how was their day, then the teacher asked someone in the class to
remind them what was their topic from their previous meeting. And finally, the
teacher proceeds to the new topic.

2. Principles in the formulation of Lesson objectives and learning activities

Based on my observation, Mr. Policarpio concepts in the formulation of lesson

objectives and learning activities were SMART. It is focused on a specific topic
which is Plate Tectonic Boundaries. As evidenced by the student's
understanding of the subject, the learning outcomes were measurable and
attainable. It was also a result-oriented activity because the student understood
how to recognize various types of boundaries. In addition, the lesson was on
time because it lasted until the end of the allotted time.

3. Principles in the selection of assessment tools

The teacher prepares an examination through kahoot that needs to answer. It is

aligned to her objectives because it corresponds to the lesson he is discussing.
All of her teaching strategy when it comes to the learning activities and
assessment are aligned to the intended learning outcomes or objectives. The
selected tools were useful and effective for he was able to measure the learning
and understanding of the students about the lesson.

4. Over-all teacher-student interaction in the teaching-learning process

In my observations, I was able to see and analyze the classroom interactions

between the teachers and students. Throughout all the joining in the online class
I made to Mr. Redante, the students seemed to be engaged with the material and
participated in class discussions and activities. Nevertheless, teacher made sure
the students stayed focused in their discussion.

5. Were the learning objectives achieved? How? What principles were

observed?

Yes, the learning objectives were achieved during discussion. He shares his
class objectives with the class by presenting the specific intended learning
outcomes for the subject matter. He begins her discussion based on how he
asked questions to the class and based on his discussion. The principles
observed were SMART. The lesson was intended for one topic or specific topic.
The learning outcomes were measurable and attainable as proven by the
students understanding on the topic via chatting on the chat box. It was also
result-oriented because students learned to recognize the different types of plate
boundaries. The discussion lasted for about an hour, which described its time-
boundedness.

6. How did the learners participate in the activities?

2|Page
Since, it's an online class, it’s hard for the students to participate in the
activities, but they tried their best to participate. They participate by chatting
about their answers through the chat box on Google Meet. Only a few of them
are really active in class participation, and the rest are somehow why in
showing what they know. I could sense that they are worried that whatever they
are going to say will be wrong. But still their teacher never ceases in
encouraging them to speak.

7. How did the teacher choose the learning activities and assessment tool?
What were his/her reasons?

He selects appropriate learning activities and assessments that are connected

with the lesson's objectives. He uses this type of assessment and activities
because he believes students will be able to focus on the learning objective and
exhibit the specific skill, and not get distracted from the overarching objective.
Without alignment, it is also challenging to evaluate the effectiveness of
teaching strategies themselves.

Reflection

 My Reflection answers these: “If I were the teacher, will I choose the same
activities and assessment tool for this subject matter and learning
objectives?” and “What insights have I learned from this experience?”

Yes, I will choose the same activities and assessment tools for this subject matter
ang learning objectives. Since, he uses formative assessment, it is an effective tool
because he wanted to monitor his student learning in order to provide ongoing
feedback that can be used by him to improve his teaching and by students to
improve their learning. In addition, it helps students identify their strengths and
weaknesses and target areas that need work. Also, he uses summative assessment
to evaluate his student’s learning at the end of the 1st quarter.

Throughout my experience in observing, I have learned a lot, especially in

formulating assessments and activities. I have learned that it is important to keep in
mind, learning objectives should be aligned with instructional strategies and
assessments to ensure that everyone involved is aware of the expectations.

1. Describe how your cooperating teacher begins his/her lesson. Why do you
think he/she does that?

My cooperating teacher started his class by stating the objectives. Students

should be informed of the lesson objectives. Then, before starting the new
discussion, the teacher reviewed the previous meeting's topic with the students
so that the students will know what is the significance and relevance of their
lesson, and then he began addressing the continuation of that topic.

2. What learning activities did the cooperating teacher used after introducing
the lesson? Why do you think he/she chose such?

After introducing the lesson, Mr. Policarpio asked the students if they had an
idea about the lesson. He used the art of questioning to encourage the students
to share their ideas. He utilizes divergent or open-ended questions, such as
"What do you think?" "What should we try?" or "What would happen if...?"
These questions have no right or wrong answers. In fact, they can have many
different answers. As a result, students are more likely to use critical- and
creative-thinking skills.

3. How did the cooperating teacher end the lesson?

The teacher ends the lesson by asking the students to summarize the lesson. He
asked one student to summarize their lesson and shared what the importance of
the lesson was in their daily lives.

4. Did you observe an assessment of learning after the lesson? How was it
done?

Yes, I observe an assessment of learning after the lesson. It was done by using
kahoot. Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that brings engagement and
fun to the students. It allows teachers to run game-like quizzes and build

6|Page
presentations with embedded quizzes. So, the teacher created a quiz using
kahoot and that was effective tools now in the midst of pandemic.

Analysis
1. How should the lesson begin and end?

For me, the lesson should begin by introducing the goal of the lesson and telling
them the reason why they need to learn those things. Those objectives will be
tied to the success or failure of gaining learning in every presentation of lesson.
And it could be assessed through the performance of the students during the
evaluation part of the lesson. And it should be ended the lesson by asking the
students what is the lesson for today again. In addition, asked the students if
there’s something they don’t understand in the lesson. In addition, give your
students activities such as games, task etc. In order for you to know if you
achieved your goal.

Reflection

2. My Reflection focuses on this: “Tell me and I forget; teach me and I

remember; involve me and I learn” – Benjamin Franklin

This quote has a lot of truth. When telling someone or students about something,
even if they understand the lesson, they are often distracted by their daily life and
forget about it. Students will begin to recall if you teach them frequently and
repeatedly. However, if you truly want to learn to the point the lesson will stay in
your head, one needs to be involved.

If students wish to improve their communication skills, they must speak more and
be willing to engage with others. If they want to learn to write, they must write
more and make improvements as they go along. Just being told or just studying
without involvement will only take you so far.
