DESCRIPTION
The Starry Night is an oil-on-canvas painting done by Vincent van Gogh in 1889.
This type of artwork can be considered to be post-impressionism. It is one of his
most well-known works to this day. Blue, black, white and yellow are the main
colors used in this painting. It is an expressive night mood painting in which brush
strokes, lines and curves, blue swirls and mountains, a yellow crescent moon, and
round-shaped stars radiate from the night sky, which is the main point of this
painting. The black flame-like cypress tree is also attractive due to its height,
which reaches and contrasts with the bright light of the stars and moon. It is
located in the foreground together with the different houses and small cottages
at the lower right that give a peaceful and calm effect in the middle of the night.
Vincent van Gogh created this painting through his observations from his window,
his imagination, and fantasies.
ANALYSIS
The colors that the artist uses can be considered to be quite strange, which leads
one to believe that the artist may have been mentally ill. Also, colors represent
different emotions as to what the artist felt in making this painting. The most
dominant color is blue, which, together with the black outline, represents a
depressing atmosphere. Despite it, the colors yellow and white stand out against
it, which creates light that represents hope and comfort. The small houses give a
sleepy and peaceful vibe which may depict ignorance and being unaware of what
van Gogh felt at that very moment. It might as well be that the cypress tree
depicts the inner thoughts about death during those times. Finally, the stars and
the moon seem so big, as if the artist wants to emphasize the important things to
him. The overall theme for this painting is tragedy and hope.
INTERPRETATION
I believe that Vincent van Gogh wanted the audience to feel his emotions and
experiences through his artworks, like Starry Night. Aside from that, he wanted
to fully express himself without imitating other forms of art. He created his own
world with his own style, and with that, it gave him freedom, comfort, and
happiness despite his condition. There are a lot of interpretations of this artwork,
but as the audience sees the chosen colors in the painting, it shows more negative
emotions to which van Gogh experienced a lot of tragic happenings in his life, yet
hope still exists despite everything, which is symbolized by the black-tall cypress
tree that contrasts with the bright colors of the stars and crescent moon. He
painted this before he died tragically, and for sure he put all of his emotions
towards the painting, which really gives a message to the audience.
JUDGMENT
No wonder why Starry Night is one of the most famous paintings of all time.
Vincent van Gogh did a great job eventhough he concluded that this painting is a
failure however he little did know, it was a very succesful one. This painting is
truly original and one of a kind in art history. With his own style and form, many
artists of present times are inspired by him. Every time I look at the painting, it
gives me a feeling of sadness and, at the same time, hope due to its color scheme,
and as I read the story behind it, it helps me more to understand and appreciate
the painting. I learned that despite the many negativities in your life, there will
always be a brighter side coming and with the life of Vincent van Gogh, even
though he died tragically, he tended to look at the bright side of his life, such as
doing art, and now, his sufferings have paid off.
