Directed Writing - Speech About Volunteering
"Good Morning, friends! I hope you are having a great day. I'm Theint Thu Thu Han from Secondary
4 B, and It's an honor to be here with you today. You must be thinking, "What is this assembly going
to be about?" I'm here to talk about a volunteering campaign that I have been planning for the past
few weeks. Before I start my speech, I want to thank my class teacher, U Khin Maung Zaw, for
giving me this opportunity.
I know that there are already several organizations and campaigns that are doing this, and you must
be asking why I'm doing this. So, what is so different and peculiar about my campaign? Well, most
people who volunteer are adults and not teenagers like us. Although we are only high school
students, I believe that if you were to join, we could make a good team.
So, what type of campaign am I going to host? I'll be arranging a campaign to help local
communities. I brainstormed a list of things we could do.
Firstly, not all of the students are lucky, and they do not have a proper education. So, we will
have a fundraiser to build schools for children in villages. We can also use the knowledge we
obtain in school and share it with them! This way, more children will get the opportunity to
learn the enthralling things in life. In fact, the educational system in our country will improve
in time.
Secondly, some children are parentless and are sent to orphanages, and vice versa, some
parents are sent to elderly shelters. We can gather donations: books, clothes, food, and
money, from our students on the campus and donate. We will also do some activities and sing
songs; this will give them happiness and optimism.
Last but not least, since there has been a dramatic climate change over the years, we will also
be planting trees or saplings around the city. In our country, some people are throwing
rubbish or spitting betel- without awareness - on the streets. We DO NOT want this, do we?
We will be cleaning the streets by collecting litter off them. By doing this, we can protect the
countries' natural environment and live in a more hygienic community.
These are the ideas that I had in mind... I wanted to explain how volunteering can benefit you, but
I'm sick of my own voice! So, can anyone share the advantages of volunteering? Anyone? ...
(Volunteering allows us to develop skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and cultural
awareness.) Yes, very good! Anyone else? (It brings fun and fulfillment into your life. Doing this will
allow you to see the panoramic view of creativity, kindness, and humanity!) Excellent! (Volunteering permits
us to record our activities during our high school years, and we can use them when we apply for universities.
In fact, these records will always be in our memory lanes.) Ah, Beautiful! Anyone else? *silence*
Okay, I'll stop here, then. Oh! I almost forgot. If you are interested, you can write your names and
classes on the paper that we pinned on the notice boards on each level. I'm looking forward to
working with you guys. Thank you so much for your attention!"
