Machine Design –II Question Bank

1. (a) Enlist applications of rolling contact bearing. Discuss load-life relationship of rolling
contact bearing. A cylindrical roller bearing is subjected to a radial load of 5 kN. The desired
life of the bearing with 90% reliability is 15000 hrs. The load application factor is 1.5. If the
shaft rotates at 1440 rpm, calculate the required basic dynamic load rating of the bearing.

(b) What is viscosity 7 Dissuss method of measuring viscosity of an oil, Determine the viscosity of
the lubricant in centipoise having viscosity 160 SUS and specific gravity 0.86.

2. (a)Explain various assumptions made in the Lewis beam strength equation.

Design a spur gear pair with 20° involute teeth based on beam strength. The velocity factor
is to be used to account for dynamic load. The pinion shaft is connected to a 12 kW, 1440 rpm
motor. The reduction ratio is 4 :1 and pinion has 18 teeth. Pinion as well as gear are made of
4008 (3„, = 610 N/mm2 ). The factor of safety and service factors both can be taken as 1.5.

(b) Draw force analysis diagram for helical gear pair. Derive an equation of beam strength of a
helical gear.
3. (a) Discuss following terms in brief
(i) Virtual number of teeth for bevel gear.
(ii) Material for worm and worm gear.
(iii) Wear strength of bevel gear.
(b) A pair of worm and worm gear is designated as 1/30/10/10. The input speed of worm is 1200
rpm. The worm wheel is centrifugal cast and made from phosphor bronze having ultimate
strength 240 N/mm2. Coefficient of friction between worm and worm teeth is 0.04. Application
factor and factor of safety are 1.25 and 1.5 respectively. The tooth system is 20° full involute.
Calculate power transmitting capacity based on beam strength.

4. (a)Explain in brief with construction and use of

(i) Roller chain (i) Silent chain
(iii) V-belt (iv) Flywheel
(v) Stresses in disc and armed flywheel,
(b) A pulley of 1000 mm diameter is driven by an open type flat belt from 25 kW, 1440 rpm
electric motor. The pulley on the motor shaft is 250 mm in diameter and the centre distance
between the two shaft is 2.0m. The allowable tensile stress for the belt material is 2 N/mm2 and
the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.28. The density of the belt material is
900 kg/m3. If the width of the belt is 125 mm. Determine: (i) Thickness of belt (ii) Length of
belt and (iii) Initial tension required in the belt.
