• To familiarize the student with the types, applications of calipers and micrometers.
• To learn the basic principle of operation and design of different types of calipers and
micrometers.
• To learn how to use different types of calipers and micrometers for linear
measurements.

Vernier caliper
A Vernier caliper (figure 1.1) is a measuring device that can be used to find length and depth
measurements both inside and outside of an object. Machinist’s engineers and anyone needing
a precise measuring tool use caliper.
They come in various sizes one needing a precise measuring tool use caliper. They come in
various sizes depending on the application in which they are needed.
The micrometer type tools (figure 1.4) are used to measure external and internal dimensions,
as well as depths and heights.
A micrometer generally provides greater precision than the caliper but can measure a
smaller range of lengths the principle of such tools consists of the employment of a screw and
a nut, both having accurately cut threats. One complete revolution of the screw will advance it,
in relation to the nut threads, a distance equal to the lead of the thread.
Moreover, one complete revolution could be divided into a number of divisions thus reading
the device to a higher level of accuracy, enhancing the resolution of the device. The most
common micrometers are:
