Bearing seating consequences

Cylindrical seating Tapered seating

Advantages Advantages
• Simple • Fast and easy mounting and dismounting
(hydraulics do the work)
• No measurements
VS • Controlled method

Disadvantages • Accurate interference fit

• Uncontrolled fit • Fine tuning possible

• Dependant on tolerances • Facilitates sleeves

- at failure, sleeve often prevents shaft damage
• No fine tuning possible - converts cylindrical shaft to tapered seating
• Dismounting difficult
• For large bearing, hot mounting Disadvantages
is impractical • Measurements required
• Tapered shaft may cost more to make

Induction heating advantages

© SKF Maintenance Products Slide 18 12/5/2019

© SKF Group
Principle of induction heating
• An induction heater is similar to a
transformer with a primary coil with a
large number of windings, and a
secondary coil with a few windings.

• The secondary coil will provide a low

voltage at high amperage.

• In the case of an SKF induction

heater, the bearing is a short
circuited, single turn, secondary coil
through which a low AC voltage flows
at high amperage, thus generating
high heat in the bearing.

• The heater itself, including the yoke,

remains at ambient temperature.

© SKF Maintenance Products Slide 19 12/5/2019

© SKF Group
Some considerations using induction
heating
• ΔT component & shaft: +90 °C (162 °F)
• The temperature of the component has
to be max 110-120 °C (230 – 248 °F)

• Temperature probe always on inner ring

• Always wear protective gloves

• Always demagnetize
• All SKF induction heaters for mounting bearings are equipped with
automatic demagnetizing cycles.

Typical lubrication mistakes
Wrong lubricant choice:
• Problematic: people lubricate more (they think that
solves the problem); excessive leakages etc.

Wrong filling degree:

• Heat generation, churning, lubricant failure

Over-greasing:
• Problematic at high speeds:
internal heat generation

Dismounting
Important issues when dismounting:
• Safety
• Quick dismounting
• Dismounting without damaging housing or shaft
• Dismounting without damaging the bearing
• Sometimes bearings are dismounted with the intention to be
remanufactured or re-used. In this case, selecting the correct methods
and tools is essential in reducing the risk of bearing damage

Possible ways of dismounting:

• Mechanical
• Mechanical/hydraulic assisted
• Heat

TMMR …F series pullers
• The multi-purpose SKF Reversible Jaw Pullers
are suitable for internal and external pulling of
bearings and other components
• Larger sizes are also available with extra long
arms as a standard option (TMMR ….XL)
• The XL arms help dismount bearings and
components placed far from the shaft end.
For more versatility, the extra long arms can
be further extended by adding extension pieces.
