How Are Guide Dogs Trained Resource Sheet

The document describes the stages of training a guide dog from birth through puppyhood, training, and being matched with an owner. Puppies are born and named, then live with volunteer puppy walkers to be socialized before going to school for further training. At school they learn commands and skills like avoiding obstacles and stopping at curbs. Dogs are then matched with owners based on compatibility and receive further training together before officially becoming a guide dog.

Cut out the activity cards on page 4 and 5 and mix them up, ask eight children to
come forward to read aloud a card each. Encourage the group of eight to put
themselves in order of a guide dog’s timeline from birth to becoming a guide dog,

As you go through each card there are additional questions and answers in the
teacher/ leader version to ask the whole group/ class.
