EXTREME JOBS
A 1.7 Wang Yaping has a job that allows her to travel—all the way to
s pace. Wang is an astronaut. In 2013, she became the second Chinese
woman to travel to space. She is also famous for a physics class that she
televised from space to more than 60 million people.
B Wang trained very hard for many years to become an astronaut. The
toughest part was desert training. Wearing a spacesuit and carrying
heavy equipment, she walked several kilometers through the hot and
sandy desert. “Sometimes it was so windy and dusty,” she says, “that we
couldn’t see each other even [though we] were just a few meters away.”
C Wang loves her job. She remembers watching the first Chinese astronaut
go into space. “I was so proud and also very excited. But as I watched it,
it occurred to me: We have male pilots and female pilots. And then a
male astronaut. When will there be a female astronaut? And today, it’s
me becoming one of the first few.”
D Zoltan Takacs is a snake researcher. He first became interested in snakes
when he was a teacher in Budapest, Hungary. Today, snakes are his
career. He travels to many different countries around the world to study
all kinds of dangerous snakes.
E Takacs studies snake venom—the poison a snake produces to kill other
animals. He hopes his research will help him discover new life-saving
drugs. There are over 100,000 types of venomous animals in the world.
“Imagine how many potential medications you could find,” he says.
F Being a snake researcher allows Takacs to travel to many beautiful and
remote places. But it is also dangerous. He has been bitten by venomous
snakes six times, but has learned to be careful. “Explorers have to know Zoltan Takacs travels the
their limits,” he says. “Then we can push those limits further.” world in search of

80% of firefighters are happy

with their jobs.

A Read the article. Circle the correct answers.

What are some of the best jobs in the world? According to some sources, the happiest workers are
firefighters, writers, teachers, artists, and nurses. Firefighters are happy because their job allows them to
help people in trouble. Writers and artists often do not make much money. However, they enjoy their
work because their jobs are very creative.
Some teachers find their jobs difficult and leave within five years. Those who stay, however, say they enjoy
having a job that allows them to work with people—teachers like helping students and watching them
grow. Finally, even though they often work long hours, nurses have a high amount of job satisfaction.

READING
A Skim the article. Choose a different title.
a The Dangerous Job of a Shark Tank Cleaner
b The Important Job of a Shark Tank Cleaner
c The Creative Job of a Shark Tank Cleaner

WORKING WITH SHARKS

A job as a cleaner may not sound very fun or exciting.
But what if it involves putting on a wetsuit and diving into a huge tank full of sharks every
day? As a shark tank cleaner at the New York Aquarium, this is what Mark Adams does.
The job of a shark tank cleaner is an important one. Cleaning the tank every day helps keep
5 the sharks healthy and happy. Mark and his team pick up any food that the sharks do not
eat—if food is left in the tank, it will go bad. The divers also clean off the algae (small green
plants) that grow on the glass. If the cleaners do not clean the glass, visitors won’t be able
to see inside the tank.
Mark loves his work. Sometimes, as he cleans the tank, he even waves to visitors.
10 Swimming in a tank full of sharks may sound like dangerous work, but the sharks are used
to people, and Mark feels safe when he dives. “We go through a long training program,”
Mark explains. “I’m confident and I enjoy my job.” Of course, the sharks are well fed. “When
we get in the tank, they’re not that hungry!”
Nonetheless, shark tank cleaners never dive alone. Mark always goes into the tank with
15 another diver while another team member watches from the top of the tank. The three
communicate using radios and hand signals. Mark says, “Sometimes we stop cleaning
when the sharks have too much energy. But we’ve had no serious problems, and really
want to keep it that way.”
