Academic Year

: 2021-2022 RESIT EXAMINATION

Class /Level: NWS 1 Duration : 1H30minutes

Course : Digital Transmission Techniques

Course Instructor: Mr. Romeo_MOUGNOL (MSc/PLETP_Electrical_and_Power_Engineering)

Instructions to Candidates: Answer ALL the questions and no document is allowed in the hall a part from
those provided by the examiner
Technology (8 marks)
1. Define the following and give one (1) example of each: (1*2=2 mark)
1.1. Analog signal
1.2. Digital signal
2. What do you understand by Digital-to-analog conversion? (0.5 marks)
2.1. Cite the four (4) main types you know. (0.5*4=2 mark)
3. Give two (2) advantages of digital modulation over analog modulation. (0.5*2=1 marks)
4. Give the use of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM)? (0. 5 marks)
4.1. Cite the three (3) main steps involved in PCM. (0.5*3=1.5 marks)
5. Define Non-Recursive filters as used in digital filtering: (0.5 mark)

Exercise 1: Frequency Shift Keying (2 marks)

1.1. A binary frequency shift keying system employs two signaling frequencies f 1 and f2. The lower
frequency f1 is 1200 Hz and signaling rate is 500 Baud. Calculate f 2. (2
mark)

Exercise 2: Amplitude Shift Keying (4 marks)

2.1. An analog signal has a bit rate of 8000 bps and a baud rate of 1000 baud. How many data elements
are carried by each signal element? How many signal elements do we need? (2
mark)
2.2. We have an available bandwidth of 100 kHz which spans from 200 to 300 kHz. What are the carrier
frequency and the bit rate if we modulated our data by using ASK with d = 1? (2
mark)

Exercise 3: Phase Shift Keying (6 marks)

A sequence b(k) of 8 bits has been transmitted using BPSK digital system at bit rate of Rb = 500 b/s.
The modulated signal x BPSK (t) is shown below.

a- Calculate the bit duration T b and the symbol duration T s. (2

mark)
b- Calculate the carrier frequency f c. (2
mark)
c- Sketch the baseband signal m(t). (2
mark)
