The teacher applied a learner-centered teaching philosophy in their lesson plan by using demonstration strategies that allowed learners to re-demonstrate the process. The teacher designed learning objectives focused on developing knowledge and attitudes based on essentialism, which emphasizes instilling academic essentials and character development in students. During discussions, the teacher used a "learning by doing" approach from progressivism by having students demonstrate and collaboratively complete tasks centered on their needs, experiences, and abilities.

In designing the learning objectives, knowledge and attitude should be developed. Essentialism in education strives to instill students with the “essentials” of academic knowledge and character development. This philosophy was popularized in 1930’s by the American educator William Bagley (1874-1946). In the Essentialist’s Platform, Bagley puts forward the principles underlying this philosophy. The first of them is that essentialism recognize the right of an immature student to the guidance of a well-educated, caring, and cultured teacher. In my discussion I demonstrate on how to describe the character of the story and make them draw an animal that can be read in the story by following the collaborative tasks. I used “Learning by doing” approach wherein students will demonstrate the process. Progressivism is a way of thinking that holds that it is possible through political action for human societies to improve overtime. Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one’s education. Believing that people learn best from what they consider most relevant to their lives, progressivists center their curricula on the needs, experience, interests, and abilities of students. The students interact with one another and develop social qualities such as cooperation and tolerance for different points of view. Progressivists believe that education should be a process of on-going growth, not just a preparation for becoming an adult. We are in groups a lot and we actively learn through discussion. Dr. Theodore considers the suggestions from the previous semester’s students and modifies his class accordingly. After reading John Dewey’s book and discussing his thoughts and ideas in class, one can see John Dewey’s relationship to progressivism. He wanted students to learn through action and being involved in the processes that will get to the product. He wanted the students to work on hands-on projects so learning would take place, rather than memorization.
