MODULE 1- Becoming a DEPED Teacher
Session 1
THE DEPED MANDATE

As a newly hired teacher in DepEd, what can you contribute to:

a. Promote quality education?

The teacher is a key player in education. In addition to educating

students, he or she oversees molding their attitudes, personalities, and
behaviors.
As a new teacher, I will support the advancement of high-quality
education by pursuing my professional development by going to conferences,
workshops, seminars, and short-term courses. I will constantly evaluate my
teaching strategies, evaluate the methods I use, and look for new ways to
make them better. By providing them with materials that encourage
cooperation, engaging them in conversations and debates, and allowing them
to contribute their fresh thoughts to the class discussion, I will also encourage
my students to be active learners.
As teacher, I will utilize different learning theories that will foster
cooperation and understanding. I will make sure that no learner anytime,
anywhere will be left behind. I employ different learning strategies that adhere
to learner differences, through this learner can cope up and acquire quality
education despite of diversity.

b. uphold equity in education?

I as a teacher must assure that all learners will learn at the end of the
day. I will make sure that there is a fairness in all aspects of my class starting
from grading, treatment and employing strategies in learning. No one will be
left behind in my class. I will expose them to different learning opportunities
equally regardless of their sexuality, age, religion, skin color and status. I will
eradicate the barriers to assure that there will be collaboration between and
among my learners.

c. Respond to the needs of the learners?

In order to respond to the needs of my learners, I will backtrack of

students’ records first. Through that, I will be able to identify what specific
aspect of student learning should I focus on. After identifying the learners’
weak points, I will employ strategies that are suited to their level and needs
gradually. I'll provide them chances to participate in learning activities that
they've started. I'll continuously check on my students' progress and
intervene as needed.

Key Topic 1
DEPED’S VISION

Required Task 1: Application

Scenario 1:
Teacher Johanna is a Grade 7 teacher at Jacobo Z. Gonzales
Memorial National High school. She encourages her learners to
demonstrate their love of country through practicing acts of kindness
inside and outside the school premises. Provide at least two ways of
integrating this in her lessons. You may respond in 3-5 sentences.
Course 1
The DepEd
Teacher
As a newly hired teacher, it is a must that I should integrate one lesson to
another lesson. I should know how to inject one topic within and across the
curriculum. I will think of a subject where I can integrate these values and learners
could show appreciation on it. I will also think of various strategies that I can
integrate the values and acts of kindness. I will see to it that my class reflects these
values because what the learners see in your room is what they carry outside.

Key Topic 2
DEPED’S MISSION

Scenario 2:
One of the Grade 9 advisory students of Teacher Andrew is
showing interest in joining scouting. However, the student is very shy
and timid. In what ways can Teacher Andrew help his learners to gain
confidence and participate in scouting? You may respond in 3-5
sentences.

I will do backtrack of students experience first in order for me to identify the

root cause of his shyness, only then I can easily give intervention for his needs. I
will also a conversation with him and explain to him what the benefits of scouting
are. It will surely boost his confidence because it is a social activity the entails
collaboration and peer communication. Teacher Andew should encourage him to go
beyond his comfort zone and joining the scouting is the perfect idea for it.
Key Topic 3
THE DEPED CORE VALUES

Required Task 2: Application

Scenario 1:
Teacher Helga is a Grade 1 teacher at Biñan Elementary
School. She is teaching Science. She wants to make sure that she can
provide a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating
environment in her class. What should she do to achieve this? You
may respond in 3-5 sentences.

By creating a lesson plan, Teacher Helga should give science activities that
encourage a kid-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment in her
class. She should ensure that her lessons are appropriate for the students, gender
neutral, safe, and encourage involvement from all students. Evey activity at the
same time should be appropriate at their age and skills as individual learner.
Course 1
The DepEd
Teacher
Required Task 3: Application

Scenario 1:
Teacher Luis is a Grade 10 guidance counselor and a Values
Education teacher at Arellano High School. One of his classes has a
diverse religious background. One day, two of the learners insisted that
the class should start with a prayer led by an assigned student. This
leads to a heated debate arguing about their own religious and spiritual
beliefs. How can Teacher Luis mediate and help resolve the
argument? (You may refer to Department Order (No. 32, s. 2013) and
Department Order (69, s. 1990)).

Teacher Luis should explain to his students that all learners are diverse.
This means that learners should respect one another despite of having different
cultural and religious backgrounds. To prevent bias in the classroom, they should
learn to respect the beliefs of others. They should accept their peers' choice if they
choose not to participate in or lead the class prayer.

Scenario 2:
The DepEd Core Values teaches us the love for God (maka-
Diyos), love for fellow men (maka-tao), love for nature
(makakalikasan), and love for country (makabansa). Teacher Molina
inspires his Grade 2 learners to become a better version of themselves
through exemplifying qualities and characters of our national heroes.
What classroom management strategies can Teacher Molina employ
to encourage learners to apply the DepEd core values in real life
situations?
Teacher Molina should use various strategies that could help learners apply
their learning in real life scenarios. One of which is role playing. The student can
absorb the positive ideals in real-life scenarios by having each group of her class
act as one of the national heroes and display their virtues.

Course 1
The DepEd
Teacher
Required Task 3: Reflection
After going through this module, (DepEd Mandate, Vision, Mission, Core
Values, and Strategic Directions), answer the following questions. Write your
responses in 3-5 sentences.
After accomplishing this module, I realized that we are not just a teacher,
we could be other profession because we mold learners holistically. Teachers’ job
requires a lot of patience and resilience. One of the crucial individuals who molds,
and shapes students' thoughts is the teacher. This session made me realize that if I
don't pursue professional development, I won't be able to give my students a high-
quality education.

How has this module helped you clarify your vision and motivations in
serving your learners better and in promoting a learner-centered environment
for them?

Despite the challenges I had as a new teacher, this module highlights the
fact for me to try and put my goal of changing the lives of my students first. The
provision of a learner-centered environment that prioritizes the welfare of my
students acts as my guide in becoming a capable teacher. This module had
helped me to keep my profession and my mission burning in my heart.

What are your personal beliefs and values that are aligned with the DepEd’s
VMV (Vision, Mission, Core Values)?
My belief is that we should learn ow to appreciate the beauty of diversity. It
is our ultimate goal to make our learners a dreamer and achiever. They could
attain their goals in life if we will train them to be the best version of themselves.
We teachers should learn how to create strategies that could help learners
experience the highest quality of teaching and learning process.

CALENDAR
Key Concept 3
IMPLEMENTING GUIDELINES

Required Task 1: Reading and Reflection

Study the rationale of the Implementing Guidelines of the DepEd School
Calendar for the current school year. Write your insight on the space provided
below. Limit your response to 150 words.

An academic calendar serves as a reminder of important events for students,

teachers, and staff during the academic year and semester. Parents, alumni, and
potential students can all benefit from it. Every educational establishment
establishes its own academic calendar with specific dates on it.
The year-round activities of the Department of Education must be
recognizable and familiar to newly hired teachers because doing so will help us
prioritize our objectives and improve our capacity for instruction, training, and
career development. Marking the dates on your personal calendar can help us
plan our activities for the year as a Department of Education teacher by giving you
a head start.

Required Task 2: Personal School Calendar

Get a copy of the latest DepEd School Calendar. In the space below, write
your personal activities, reconciling them with the important dates set by DepEd
throughout the school year.

KEY TOPIC 2
SCHOOL-BASED
MANAGEMENT

Required Task 2: Scenario Analysis

Scenario 1:
Teacher Lozano, the mother of one of your advisory
students, visited you in the school because of a bullying incident that you
are not aware of. She was very angry and disappointed about what
happened because the incident was not addressed and resolved
properly. Her daughter is still afraid and decided not to go to school that
day. The incident happened during Science time because the teacher
was late to enter the class. You also had other classes to attend to and
had no chance to meet your advisory class during that time. Who should
you seek help to?

I will seek for the advice of the guidance counselor and ask the parent to settle
the issue with the guidance. The guidance has the best capability to settle this issue
and to give appropriate action to this matter. If the problem can’t be resolved by the
guidance counselor, that is the time to raise the issue to the school head.

Scenario 2:
Teacher Mary Ann, a fellow teacher whom you consider a friend,
messaged you on Facebook and told you that she will be absent
tomorrow. She asked you to substitute all her five classes. Without letting
you respond, she already sent you the learning materials for her lessons
tomorrow. However, you also have classes to attend, and your learners
are expecting to deliver a performance task that they prepared for. What
are you going to do as a colleague and who should you direct her to?

I will honestly tell her that I also have my class to attend to. I just cannot
leave my students that way because my class is my priority and that is my liability. I
must secure the safety of my class during my time.
I will suggest that she send a message to the principal explaining that she is
unable to attend class and that she needs a replacement teacher so that the principal
can choose which teachers are available to cover her class.

Scenario 3:
Lito, the class president of your advisory class, was elected
as the president of the Supreme Student Government (SSG). After three
months, his subject teachers are having trouble with his class standing

adviser?
Teachers should manifest these roles by incorporating these in classroom
management. We teachers should actively perform our jobs with all our heart.

3. So far, how was your experience as a classroom adviser?

So far, I think I am enjoying my job as a teacher because I was able to
encounter different learners that gives me a lot of real-life learnings. I've
discovered that I need to study classroom management successfully. I also
understood that every student has a unique learning style, which is why I need to
include a variety of activities in my lectures. It is quite difficult for me as a teacher
because they have different learning styles. They encourage me to work hard to
be a great teacher and to continue developing professionally as a result of this
experience.

Required Task 4: Reflection

The following are some ways that can help you create a motivating and
conducive environment. How are you going to illustrate these ways in your own
classroom? Limit your response to 100-150 words per question.
a. Hold and communicate high behavioral expectations for your learners and
yourself.
b. Establish clear rules and procedures and instruct learners on how to follow
them. Give primary-level learners, in particular, a great deal of instruction,
practice, and reminding.

Setting high expectations for behavior before demanding hard academic

performance from students is one of the finest ways to support them. Students monitor
themselves and take more responsibility for their behavior and their learning when
teachers set clear, consistent expectations for the classroom. Additionally, teachers can
more easily identify and encourage positive behaviors, which reduces classroom stress
for both students and teachers. Students also feel safer and more secure in the
classroom, and the class as a whole.
Once the rules are in place, the students will start to notice the culture of the
classroom. The teacher will then go over and put classroom procedures into practice.
Rules and procedures should both be clear and basic enough for a pupil to understand.
Before the start of the school year, the instructor must create and explain the classroom
processes, which will begin the moment a student enters the room.
