Method Statement

1. Purpose:

The purpose of this method statement is to describe the logical sequence of activities
involved in substructure waterproofing and the documents to be recorded for
substructure waterproofing.

2. Scope:

This method statement is applicable for all activities related to substructure


waterproofing for TRANSCO Project, N-8033, New 132/33 kV Substation by Larsen
and Toubro at Kalba.

3. Reference Documents:

3.1 TRANSCO Standard S-TR-CIVIL-BUILD (Rev. 0-2009)

4. Tools, Tackles, Equipments and Materials:

4.1 Measuring tape

4.2 Cutting blades / knife

5. Responsibilities:

5.1 Construction Manager, Site Engineer, Foreman and supervisors shall be


responsible for the substructure waterproofing activities at site.

5.2 QA/QC In charge shall be responsible for the QA/QC activities at site.

5.3 Safety In charge shall be responsible for the EHS activities at site.

6. Method / Procedure:

6.1 General

6.1.1 Prior to the commencement of all construction activities, necessary work


permit, if applicable shall be obtained.

6.1.2 All materials identified / used for the permanent works shall be complied
with the approved documents by Owner / Engineer, prior to the
procurement.

6.1.3 All EHS activities related to this activity shall be based on the Owner /
Engineer / Contractor EHS Management System Guidelines.

6.1.4 All quality assurance and quality control activities shall be in line with
contractor Civil Quality Management System and the specified
requirements of the contract, Project Quality Plan.

6.1.5 Following substructure waterproofing materials shall be used and


approval for material shall be made available from Owner / Engineer prior
to procurement / use.

6.1.5.1 Polyprime SB

6.1.5.2 Bitustick R 3000 (2 mm thick)

6.1.5.3 Bituboard (3.5 mm thick)

6.1.5.4 Bitumastic sealant

6.1.6 All materials whether loose or on pallets/tins shall be stored in dry and
shaded area to keep away form direct sunlight and to protect from
extreme temperature.

6.1.7 Water proofing shall be done to all sub structural concrete elements in
contact with soil which includes pile caps, tie beams, ground beams,
ground slabs, and columns below ground, etc.

6.1.8 The waterproofing works shall not be allowed when there is a risk of rain
or dust storm.

6.2 Surface Preparation

6.2.1 All surfaces to receive waterproofing shall be cleaned thoroughly of all


contaminants like dust, traces of curing compound, release agents, oil
and grease.

6.2.2 All surface imperfections nail head protrusions, honeycombs, holes,


cavities, cracks, structurally unsound and friable concrete shall be
removed and repaired with suitable concrete repair material.

6.2.3 25 x 25 mm chamfers shall be provided at all external corners and similar


mortar fillets shall be made at internal corners with cement sand mortar
(1: 3).

6.2.4 The surface shall be made dry before priming with polyprime SB.

6.3 Primer (Polyprime SB)

6.3.1 Once the surface is ready for water proofing, inspection shall be raised
and approval shall be made available prior to start of application of primer.

6.3.2 The contents of the drum shall be mixed for a few minute to remove any
sediment.

6.3.3 The primer shall be applied to clean smooth and dry surface by brush or
roller.

6.3.4 The applied primer shall be allowed to dry prior to application of


membrane.

6.4 Membrane application (Bitustick R 3000)

6.4.1 The prime coat shall be touch dry before the application of the membrane.

6.4.2 Two layers of 2mm thick approved elastomeric sheet membranes from
approved make shall be used.

6.4.3 300mm reinforcing strips shall be applied at both internal and external
corners prior to start the application of main water proofing membranes.

6.4.4 Main water proofing membrane shall be applied strictly in accordance with
the manufacturer instruction / technical data sheet.

6.4.5 Horizontal membrane shall be extended, minimum 150mm beyond the


blinding concrete and overlap with the vertical members shall be done as
per approved drawings.

6.4.6 Once the single layer application is completed, second layer of membrane
shall be applied at right angles to the first layer.

6.4.7 The vertical membranes shall be tucked into a groove cut in the concrete
and sealed with a suitable mastic sealant as shown on the approved
drawings. Groove also shall be primed with approved primer.

6.5 Protection Course (Bituboard / screed)

6.5.1 Applied membranes shall be protected immediately from the ongoing


other site activities with the following methods.

6.5.1.1 Approved 50mm thick protection screed (grade 20/10) for horizontal
water proofing membranes which shall be laid over the membrane
immediately after installation.

6.5.1.2 Approved bituboard of 3.5mm thick for vertical water proofing


membranes with proprietary bituminous adhesive.

6.5.2 Backfilling activities if any shall be done in a controlled manner to avoid


the risk of dragging protection boards and temporary supports to hold the
boards in place, if necessary, shall be made until the backfilling
operations are completed.

6.5.3 While laying the screed, damages to the membrane shall be avoided and
the surface of the membrane shall be cleaned and cleared of any debris
and foreign objects.
