LEARNING OUTCOMES
Investigate technologies and trajectories relevant to 3G, 4G, and 5G networks (C4,
CLO2
PLO4)

CLO3 Justify solutions recommended relevant to 3G, 4G, and 5G networks (A3, PLO9)

The case study:

Section A
The gaming industry has changed dramatically over these few years through three major
waves that has been influenced by technological advancements. The first catalyst to
transform the gaming industry was the development of console gaming systems that
made gaming an accessible mass market house hold activity. The console gaming wars of
the 1980’s, 1990’s and 2000’s saw heavy competition between Nintendo, Sony, and
Microsoft among others. The development of the Internet and vast improvements in
home broadband connectivity brought a second wave of change to the gaming industry.
Network gaming allowed for the expansion of gaming from single player experiences to
multiplayer that connected players in different homes.

The third major wave that has propelled the gaming industry to new level has been the
revolution in devices. Handheld electronics had been around for a while, even in gaming,
with early devices like Nintendo Game Boy, but the portable computing power of
smartphones was a catalyst for mass adoption. In that sense, smartphones and tablets
acted to enable mobile gaming on a larger scale, moving gaming beyond the confines of
the home, while at the same time connecting people on an unprecedented scale. The
following figure shows the global games market as reported by Newzoo in April 2018:

Numbers, 2018-2021 Represents Forecasted Data. Source: 2018 Global Games Market Report, Newzoo. 30
April 2018

In view of the second and third waves it can be realized that one common supporting
element is the communication infrastructure which contributes to the success of the
gaming industry. Consequently, the communication infrastructure itself have gone
through changes and evolution with the current focus on the latest wireless
communication technologies which supports the third wave of gaming industry
incorporating handheld and portable devices.

Therefore, your assignment team is required to first compare the various evolution
introduced by 3GPP for the 4th generation (4G) standard and beyond. In your
comparison, focus on the general technical development and improvements, followed by
the impact and benefits such technologies bring to the consumers.

Section B
Subsequently, each member of the team needs to conduct a feasibility study focusing on
technical, economical, and procedural/non-technical factors for the following criteria:

- key performance indicators (KPIs), regulatory, licensing, health and

environmental;
- architecture, hardware and software/firmware;
- threats and security;

Apply and relate the feasibility study to the gaming industry, in particular for Massively
Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG), and provide the recommended
solution(s). Justify your solution(s) using information from the literature review. The
report must include an overview/general diagram to represent the suggested
implementation for the proposed scenario. Additional diagrams and figures are
encouraged to substantiate and complement the facts included.

2. Maximum word count for entire report must not exceed 3500 words. Wherein, group
part does not exceed 500 words (i.e. each member is approximately 160 words)
and individual parts does not exceed 3000 words (i.e. each member is 1000 words).
This excludes tables and figures.

3. Attach the marking scheme provided in the previous page as the cover page and enter
each member’s name accordingly.
