There are lots of places where the Internet of Things (IOT) and Cloud computing
should work together. IoT devices have limited processing and energy resources that
do not allow complex, on-site data processing meaning collected data is usually
transmitted to more powerful nodes where aggregation and processing is possible. In
IOT everyday objects such as food or clothing have tags that allow them to be tracked
by sensor networks by RFID devices they are short-ranged and often suffer from
security issues and reliability. For example in healthcare IoT is already used to collect
the patient’s vital data via sensors and video surveillence uses cameras as sensors.

Many companies now place all of their data on the Cloud so that they do not have to
run a local infrastructure to support their data locally.

The integration of Cloud and IoT is a booming topic in industry and research and
there is a need for looking at both of them together to create things that improve the
life of many people.

Environmental monitoring is another exciting possibility. Sensors are deployed into a

variety of locations such as lakes (to monitor water quality), streets (to monitor air
pollution) or in the soil (to monitor landslides). These sensors produce a lot of data.
That data is useful to end-users. However, a large infrastructure is needed to making
the monitoring effective.

Intelligent transport systems are also an exciting possibility and the integration of
Cloud with IoT technologies (such as WSNs and RFID) represents a promising
opportunity. Cars already have sensors and data gathered from them could be
transferred to the cloud so that it could be processed to predict where traffic jams
might happen.

Smart homes are another application. If lights, heat and air conditioning can be
monitored through sensors then they can be remotely controlled. Lighting is
responsible for 19% of global use of electricity and 6% of greenhouse gas comes form
light so if the cloud can be used to control this it would have a big impact on the
planet. To make this work, though, home devices have to be able to communicate
with the web and there need to be standards.
