Let’s Recall
In this pandemic situation in our society, what are different changes you have observed and
experienced? Write down at least (3) scenarios that show these changes. How did you adapt with these
changes?
Let’s Explore
In any society, change is inevitable. It is a natural law which can be interpreted. In general, society
undergoes continual change. In the coming years social institutions such as family, economic system,
belief system and education will have new faces and systems.
Social dynamics is one of the two pillars which Auguste Comte had discovered in his study of social
stability. Dynamics arise steadily and in a steady phase, according to sociologists. Society, like an
organism, is trying to live, can evolve, die, rejuvenate, adapt, accommodate, and transform itself.
Social change is the modification or replacement of any social process, social pattern or social
institution (Jones, 1949). Modification applies to the transformation of goods and social conditions.
Replacement, on the other hand, refers to a new substance or concept that supersedes the current
culture.
Innovation refers to new types of operation (e.g. chain stores), procedures and practices (e.g. laws
prohibiting organizational bribery and corruption), products (e.g., modern technology), and services (e.g.
online shopping).
Diffusion is the spreading of culture through migration, commerce, war, or colonialism into another.
Studying diffusion, from the point of view of sociology and anthropology, can help people understand the
essence of culture, the root of cultural features, and how it spreads from one society to another. Diffusion
is essentially human, and has been practiced in different forms by many people. From a logical point of
view, borrowing technology is better than designing or inventing it.
American cultural anthropologies Alfred L. Kroeber describes acculturation as the changes brought
on by another culture, which leads to an improvement in two cultures' similarity. Acculturation takes place
by direct interaction between the members of each community. (Winthrop, 1991)
Assimilation, on the other hand, refers to the integration of a person or community with the dominant
culture or community 's political, economic, and educational norms (Thompson, 1998). According to Park
(1921) and Burgess (1969), as quoted by Irene Bloemraad (2007), the end point of assimilation is cultural
fusion, or the process of perception and fusion in which individuals and groups absorb the memories,
emotions, and attitudes of others. (Abulencia and Padernal, 2016)
Let’s Elaborate
Based on the discussion about the types of social change, differentiate them using the Venn
