1. INTRODUCTION TO SYLVESTER PROP WITHDRAWER

❑ Sylvester Prop Withdrawer is meant for pulling the props etc. From goaf
area.
❑ Alternatively it can be used for felling the trees, pulling the machines.
❑ Sylvester prop Withdrawer is specially suitable for use to withdraw the
prop in underground mines.

CONSTRUCTION OF SYLVESTER PROP WITHDRAWER

• The Prop puller comprises tested steel sword or toothed ratchet bar.
• A short chain 900 mm. long is permanently attached to it through a swivel
connection.
• Sliding block of malleable cast iron houses in its recess usually 4.5 mt. long
pulling chain.
• A pulling handle provides a leverage of about 30 to 1.

04. WORKING PRINCIPAL OF SYLVESTER PROP
WITHDRAWER

❑ The importance of the withdrawal of supports is that it helps the rocks over
the waste to fall. If the supports were not removed and rocks over the waste
did not fall, the weight of the overhanging rocks might eventually become
so great that breaks would appear in the roof above the coalface and falls of
roof might take place there.

❑ The withdrawal of supports is a job that should be done with the greatest of
care. No person should work under roof that is not properly secured.

❑ Some device such as a Sylvester prop withdrawer should be used to remove

the props and bars from under the roof.

❑ A spare chain should be attached to the next prop that is to be removed so

that the workman does not roof that is unsupported and, therefore, unsafe
have to go under .
PROP SUPPORT

❑ Prop support is used to give immediate support of any point to the roof.

❑ It comprise –

1. Prop (wood/steel).

2. Lid.

3. Wedge.

05. OPERATION OF SYLVESTER PROP WITHDRAWER

❑ Before Withdrawer Operation

▪ Check the availability of spare Chain.

▪ Attach spare chain to the next prop to be withdrawn, so that it is

not necessary to go under roof which may be unsettled.

▪ Start withdrawing with most remote prop and then the others in

turn working towards safe roof at all times.

Figure:- 9
❑ Operation Of Withdrawing Prop

▪ .STEP I: Set an anchor prop inclined towards the prop to be

withdrawn, and with the head inserted into a notch made in the roof.

Figure:- 10.1

▪ STEP II: Pass the short chain which is attached to the sword of the
Sylvester round the foot of the anchor prop so that the hook passes under
the chain.
Figure:- 10.2

▪ STEP III: Pass the hook end of the long chain round the top
of the prop that is to be withdrawn. Loop the chain through the
hook, pull the chain tight, and place a link in the eye of the
Sylvester box.
Figure:- 10.3

▪ STEP IV: Operate the Sylvester by means of handle until the prop
released.

Figure:- 10.4
▪ .STEP V: Pull the released prop from beneath the unsupported roof
either by means of the Sylvester chain, or by means of a long bandied pick.

07. REASON BEHIND USING SYLVESTER PROP
WITHDRAWER.

▪ Mainly safety point of view.

▪ Can be withdrawn 2-3 prop in single operation.

▪ Can be operated from a safe place.

▪ Easy to handle.

▪ More efficient work.

08. CERTIFICATION OF SYLVESTER PROP WITHDRAWER.

Certification :-

Tested & Approved by

C. M. R. S. Vide T. C. No. S/53/86

09. SAFETY MEASURES OF SYLVESTER PROP
WITHDRAWER.

▪ By taking a safe shelter.

▪ By adopting all safety wearable things.

▪ Use a safety device when removing chocks.

USE OF SYLVESTER PROP WITHDRAWER IN CHURCHA
UNDERGROUND COAL MINE IN CHHATISGARH

❑ BACKGROUND OF MINE:- The Churcha RO Underground Coal Mine

Project has a designed capacity of 2.10 MTPA on a mining lease area of
3590.147 ha is located in villages, Sardi and Shivpur, Tehsil Baikunthpur,
District Korea, State Chhattisgarh, India. The project started operating
with a capacity of 0.6 MTPA on a ML area of 2240.952 Ha and received its
EC on 17 February 1995. The project further secured its environment
clearance for an expansion from 0.6 MTPA to 2.10 MTPA on 3 May 2012.
The project consists of four units Churcha Underground, Churcha West
Underground, Shivpur Incline and Ghughra Incline.

In 2016, the coal production from Churcha coal mine in Baikunthpur area
of SECL was stopped for more than four days as a structure of the receiver
belt that loads coal from the underground mines to the coal handling plant
at Churcha railway station broke down. As a result, over 1,000 workers had
been deployed in other work. Moreover, there had been loss of over 5,000
tonnes of coal because of the mishap.
