Attachment in Sport, Exercise
and Wellness
Sam Carr
University of Bath, UK
Series: Routledge Research in Sport and Exercise Science

Attachment theory is a concept well known to ‘mainstream’

psychologists, informing the literature in areas as diverse
as psychodynamics, developmental psychology, social
psychology and counselling. This important new book is the
first to demonstrate the relevance of attachment theory to
the psychology of sport, exercise and wellness, opening up
important new avenues for research and professional practice.
In this book, author Sam Carr explains that attachment theory
can help us to better understand well established themes and
processes in sport and exercise, including motivation, social
relationships, cognitive models of coping, and group processes.
By introducing the core elements of attachment theory and
mapping out those areas in which it can inform the knowledge
and practice of psychologists working in sport, exercise and
wellness, this book represents an innovative and important
contribution to the psychological literature.

Augmenting Cognition
Idan Segev, The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel
Henry Markram, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland

Augmenting cognition is a rapidly emerging field in

neuroscience, concerned with the translation of what is
known about cognitive function and dysfunction to engineer
approaches to enhance and rehabilitate the brain. Modern
medicine has few options to treat those with cognitive
deficiencies, and as we learn more about the biology of these
conditions, we consider the design of a new class of therapies to
restore and augment cognition. This book describes a number of
the foundational areas of cognitive enhancement, with chapters
devoted to the following subject areas: use of stem cells,
savants, post-traumatic stress disorder, deep-brain stimulation,
music and dance, virtual reality, role of sleep, longevity, drugs,
and the brain-computer interface.

This book takes a look at how and why individuals display
unethical behavior. It emphasizes the actual behavior of
individuals rather than the specific business practices. It
draws from work on psychology which is the scientific study
of human behavior and thought processes. As Max Bazerman
said, “efforts to improve ethical decision making are better
aimed at understanding our psychological tendencies.”

Cognition and Emotion
Neuroscience and Behavioural Perspectives
Philip Allen, University of Akron, USA; Mei-Ching Lien, Oregon State University, USA; Eric Ruthruff, University of
New Mexico, USA (Eds.)
A Special Issue of the Journal of Cognitive Psychology
Emotions can have profound effects on a wide range of cognitive
processes (from attention and memory to decision-making). In the
reverse direction, there is clear evidence that cognitive processes can
modulate emotional responses. This special issue provides a broad
sampling of recent, cutting-edge research on cognition and emotion. The
overarching goal is to provide a deeper and more complete theoretical
framework relating cognition and emotion, covering both behavioral and
neuroscientific views.

Informative Hypotheses
Theory and Practice for Behavioral and Social Scientists
Herbert Hoijtink
University Utrecht, The Netherlands
Series: Chapman & Hall/CRC Statistics in the Social and Behavioral Sciences
When scientists formulate their theories, expectations, and hypotheses,
they often use statements like: “I expect mean A to be bigger than means
B and C”; “I expect that the relation between Y and both X1 and X2 is
positive”; and “I expect the relation between Y and X1 to be stronger than
the relation between Y and X2”. Stated otherwise, they formulate their
expectations in terms of inequality constraints among the parameters in
which they are interested, that is, they formulate Informative Hypotheses.
There is currently a sound theoretical foundation for the evaluation of
informative hypotheses using Bayes factors, p-values and the generalized
order restricted information criterion. Furthermore, software that is
often free is available to enable researchers to evaluate the informative
hypotheses using their own data. The road is open to challenge
the dominance of the null hypothesis for contemporary research in
behavioral, social, and other sciences.

Peak performances should not be left to chance. Rather than
hoping that you will perform at your best, why not engineer
your performance?
Peak Performance Every Time incorporates principles from
sport psychology and performance coaching and applies these
to all areas of life. Using illustrations and real-world examples
from top athletes and business executives, it focuses on the
three main components that underpin performance:

The Future of Everyday Memory Research?
Catherine Loveday, University of Westminster, UK
Martin A. Conway, University of Leeds, UK (Eds.)
A Special Issue of Memory
This special issue is the first collection of preliminary reports
using advanced camera technology, the SenseCam, to study
and rehabilitate everyday memory in ways not previously
possible. This set of preliminary reports from established
memory researchers and clinicians uses a series of group
and case studies to evaluate the greater potential of this
new technology in investigating and improving memory for
everyday experiences.

concludes with a demonstration of how to edit or modify the macros or

A Special Issue of Cognitive Neuroscience
The past decade has seen increasing interest within the
cognitive neuroscience community in understanding the
psychological processes involved in representing the body,
and in learning how these processes may be implemented
within the brain. This special issue of Cognitive Neuroscience
contributes to the rapidly developing literature by presenting
six empirical and two theoretical discussion papers and their
commentaries. It provides a timely review of the current state-

The Psychology of Eyewitness

James Michael Lampinen, University of Arkansas, USA; Jeffrey S. Neuschatz, Andrew D. Cling, University of
Alabama in Huntsville, USA
Series: Essays in Cognitive Psychology

This volume provides a tutorial review and evaluation of scientific

research on the accuracy and reliability of eyewitness identification.
The book starts with the perspective that there are a variety of
conceptual and empirical problems with eyewitness identification as
a form of forensic evidence, just as there are a variety of problems
with other forms of forensic evidence. There is then an examination
of the important results in the study of eyewitness memory and the
implications of this research for psychological theory and for social
and legal policy. The volume takes the perspective that research on
eyewitness identification can be seen as the paradigmatic example
of how psychological science can be successfully applied to real
world problems.
