“Happy Birthday,” David’s mother said. She gave


him a present. David opened it. “Oh, thanks, Mom! It
looks great!” He put on his new baseball cap. It was
yellow with red stripes. David was very happy.

One day after his birthday, he wore his new baseball cap to school. “Wow! A new
baseball cap. Super!” Jeff and Collin said. Jeff and Collin were
David’s friends. David was very proud. “I don’t want to take my
cap off. I would like to wear it to class,” he told them, but then he
thought that it was better to take it off and put it in his backpack.
He was afraid he might lose it.

After school, David wanted to put his baseball cap on again. He couldn’t find it in his
backpack. “Do you know where my new cap is?” he asked Collin and Jeff. They just smiled.
“You know where it is. Tell me!” David said. “Why don’t you look for it?” they said while
laughing. “They know where it is,” David thought. He didn’t say anything to them. He just
waited. “Why don’t you look for your cap?” Jeff and Collin asked. David didn’t say a word. He
took his bike and rode home.

When he arrived home, his mother looked at him and asked, “How was school today?”
“Not good,” David said. “What happened?” she asked. “Jeff and Collin hid my cap,” David
said while running to his room.

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Collin and Jeff were there. They asked David’s
mom if he could go out and play with them. David’s mom said yes. When David went out of
his room, his friends asked him, “Did you find your baseball cap?” David answered “No, I lost
it.” Then, Collin asked him, “What’s that on your head then?”
pointing to his head. David touched his head, and felt happy
again. His cap was there the whole time! The three of them
laughed about it and went out to ride their bicycles around
the neighborhood.
