Classroom Environment (AEA: Coordination, Integrative Interaction

WTS: 2,3,5DISP: Respect, Responsibility) Reinforces a learning community in which individual differences are respected and in which students work collaboratively and independently Plans for and delivers motivational instruction by relating lessons to students interest, providing student choice, questioning and investigation Organizes, allocates, and manages resources of time, space, activities and attention to engage students productively Maximizes the amount of class time spent in learning by creating expectations and procedures for communication and behavior

Evidence (Candidate and Student)

Great job getting the class started and reminding them, frequently, of expectations. The cartoon was an excellent way to demonstrate how math is used on a daily basis your dramatic reading was very engaging as well. Repeating the directions as you walk around the room is a great strategy for all students. It is clear from your instruction that you want students to be successful and are willing to keep working with them until they can demonstrate their understanding. Your enthusiasm is evident I liked that you incorporated yourself in the application problem, nice way to connect with the students.

Evidence (Candidate and Student)

Begins with correcting homework are there any questions? No response, so we all got 100%? Asks additional questions to encourage engagement. You do a nice job of asking a variety of questions to be sure that students understand the concepts. They arent active participants, which can make checking for understanding difficult but you offer multiple explanations, which is of benefit to all of the learners. The word problems are more difficult and you do a nice job of helping them to read the problem and eliminate the unnecessary words. Between you and Laura, you offer the students a variety of strategies to solve the problems.

Assessment (AEA: Diagnosis, Integrative InteractionWTS: 8,9

DISP: Respect, Reflection) Uses appropriate formal and informal assessment strategies that are linked to lesson objectives Monitors the impact of teaching on student learning, modifying plans and instruction accordingly

You had planned to use a checklist to monitor student achievement as you moved around the room but did not use it in this lesson. As you were self assessing, you indicated that you thought it might be intrusive and counter-productive given the group, I definitely agree. You were definitely able to informally assess as you moved around the room and this will give you good information to work with to determine if your objectives were met.

Summary Statement and Areas to Concentrate on Improving: :

What a great opportunity to learn about team teaching. While the lesson is yours, Laura does a nice job of demonstrating alternate ways of solving problems. The various options are good for the students to recognize and it gives you good ideas for how to present the material in the future. With this group of students, your goal was to be able to meet the needs of your lower level learners and you wanted to slow the pace some to give them an opportunity to process the information. You did a very nice job of giving them time to think you didnt accept the first answer, you waited for more students to have a chance to solve the problem. This lets all students know that you want them to be successful and are not just looking for the right answer. The idea of marinating is a good one have you used it before? Do they know what it means? You used the SmartBoard well and it was very easy to see the examples from the back of the room. You used mathematical language in your presentation and asked student to do the same. I like how youre thinking strategically is a great way to honor their choices and contributions. This was a well developed and implemented lesson I look forward to your future lessons and to another observation
