A racket sport played indoors on a court by two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs of players (doubles), in which a
shuttlecock is volleyed over a net and the competitions are presided by an umpire in British English and a referee in American
English.
1. Game
The five main categories of badminton play are men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed
doubles. To play badminton, opposing singles players or doubles teams stand on either side of a badminton net.
2. Court
The court is a 13.40m x 5.18m rectangle for singles and a 13.40m x 6.10m rectangle for doubles. The same court is used for
Singles and Doubles contests; only the line marks differ. The court is divided into two equal parts by a net attached to the posts at
a height of 1.55m.
3. Net
A badminton net is 2 1/2-feet deep and is raised 5 feet high across the center of the badminton court, over the net line. Often made
from vinyl mesh, most nets have a leather or cotton top
4. Shuttles
The shuttlecock is made of a semispherical piece of cork coated with leather. On it are attached 16 real goose feathers forming a
cone. A shuttlecock must weigh between 4.74g and 5.5g.
5. Rackets
Badminton rackets are made from lightweight materials that are known for durability such as aluminum, steel and carbon fiber. The
overall length limit of a badminton racket is 26.77 inches. Standard badminton rackets must not be wider than 9.06 inches. The strings
on the racket must range from .03 inches thick. The overall weight of the racket cannot exceed 3.2 oz.
6. Badminton Uniform
Badminton athletes wear shorts/skirts and short sleeved shirts and any combination of colors is permissible. In doubles both players
must wear the same clothing, which has their name on the back of the shirts. Shoes are usually flat but there are no official standards
or specifications. Badminton, like the other sports, is an activity that requires physical actions at a certain level of skill and ability
where players compete under a set of rules. Whereas, it is necessary to learn the basic of badminton in order to properly play the
game. Nonetheless, understanding how the game is played is most essential.
Dribbling
It is an important skill for all basketball players. This skill will allow you to move up and down the court, maneuver past defenders and
execute plays. This involves bouncing the ball off the floor with your hands. Proper dribbling requires ballhandling skills and knowledge
of how to spread your fingers for ball control. It is also best if you know how to dribble equally well with both hands.
Shooting
The act of attempting to score points by throwing the ball through the basket. It requires the ability to properly hold and throw the
ball into the air toward the basket while avoiding defenders.
Passing
Another skill that when mastered can help you become a complete basketball player. A pass happens when one player throws the
ball to another player with a purpose of setting up a play or taking a shot.
Basic Passes
Chest Pass. The pass originates from the chest. It is thrown by gripping the ball on the sides with the thumbs directly behind the
ball. When the pass is thrown, the fingers are rotated behind the ball and the thumbs are turned down.
Bounce Pass. Is thrown with the same motion however it is aimed at the floor. It should be thrown far enough out that the ball
bounces waist high to the receiver.
Overhead Pass. Is often used as an outlet pass. Bring the ball directly above your forehead with both hands on the side of the ball
and follow through. Do not bring the ball behind your head, because it can get stolen and it takes a split-second longer throw the
pass.
Running
A big part of basketball, you will find yourself running back and forth as the game quickly transitions between offense and defense.
When you have the ball, running will help you to avoid defenders and get to the basket quicker. On defense, you often will find
yourself needing to run after the opponent, especially during fast breaks.
History of Volleyball
Volleyball was originally invented by William Morgan in 1985. He was an athletic director at the Young Men Christians
Association (YMCA) and was trying to come up with a game that would be fun, like basketball, but less taxing. Of course
the rules have changed some since then, but it quickly became a popular sport at the YMCA.
Volleyball Skills
Volleyball is a sports that requires you to master a complex skill set. Because you rotate from playing front line
positions to back line positions, you constantly are shifting from setting up offensive plays to completing offensive
plays.
SERVICE
The volleyball serve is the first opportunity for a player to score a point. It begins each rally. Once you toss the ball in
the air you must contact the ball to send it over the net to land inside the lines of the court. Each player gets only one
chance to serve.
DIG
The "dig" is a forearm pass that is used to control the ball and pass it to the setter at the net. It is usually the first
contact by the team and an effective shot to use in defense, such as when receiving a spike. The "libero" handles
much of the team's serve reception and is pivotal in backcourt defense.
SET
The "set" is an overhead pass used to change the direction of the dig and put the ball in a good position for the spiker.
The set is usually the second contact in a rally and the person who sets the ball the most is called the setter.
SPIKE
The "spike" is when the ball is hit or smashed across the net. It is the most powerful shot in Volleyball – and the most
effective way to win a rally.
BLOCK
A block is the first opportunity for a team on defense to keep the team on offense from hitting into their court. Once the
whistle blows and your team serves the ball over the net, your team is on defense, ready to defend your court.
MODULE 7 - Sports Event for a Target Health Issue or Concern – Football
Nature and Background of Football
Football is a team sports played with a spherical ball between two
teams of 11 players. The game is played in a rectangular field called
a pitch with a goal at each end. The objective of the game is to
score by moving the ball beyond the goal into the opponent’s goal.
Basically, soccer or football started during 2nd and 3rd centuries BC in China. Soccer was played first during Han
dynasty where people dribbled the leathered ball into a small net. Romans and Greeks has also recorded facts that they
play ball for fun, and even people from Kyoto in Japan enjoyed to kick around the ball. While modern soccer started in
England wherein there are facts, first ball used was the head of some Danish brigand.
Types of Tournaments
A. Elimination Tournaments is for short round of matches. This is suitable
for time-constrained events.
• Single Elimination is when a player or team loses, they
get eliminated and the winning (player or team) continues to
play to the next round until there is only one player or team
left.
• Double Elimination is similar to single elimination
except that the players or team gets eliminated after losing
twice.
B. Round - Robin tournament is the most commonly used type of
tournament and one of the most competitive tournaments since
players or teams play to get a chance to play more. This
tournament is ideally used for a team competition playing not more
than eight games.
• Round robin is a format where each team plays a number of games (n-1) depending on
how many teams are participating
• Lombard round robin is a round robin type of tournament used for
limited allotted period. If full games are not possible, mini games
are played. All scores for or against points are recorded to
determine the wining team with the best ratio.
C. Challenge Tournament has levels where winners go up and
losers go down from their respective positions. Winning is
important to climb to the top position. This tournament needs
enough time to give chance to the teams and players bottom
position to reach the top.
• Ladder tournament suits single player competitions like
tennis or badminton games where players challenge each other
on a one-on-one match
• Pyramid tournament is almost similar to the ladder
tournament except that it has more players at the lower level
when the tournament starts, then as the level of game
progresses, the number of players decreases.
• Spider Web Tournament is a bracketing design taken
from the shape of a spider’s web. The top position is the center
where players reach it through the lines drawn from the center.
The players who gets the center wins the championship.
