Objectives

Explain the menstrual cycle.

Your Lesson for Today

In this module you will

learn to identify the phases of menstrual cycle
using illustrations/diagram.
Hi! I’m teacher Cryz. How old are you? At your age, you may already be experiencing the
changes in your body related to your stage of growth. This stage of growth and development is
called puberty. When a female enters puberty, her reproductive organs begin to mature. She
then experiences menstrual cycle. What is menstruation? What is menstrual cycle?

• Menstruation is the monthly discharge of blood in women. It usually lasts 3-7 days
• The human female undergoes a monthly cycle of events called the menstrual cycle.
• The menstrual cycle is a series of changes during which an egg matures and the uterus
is prepared for possible pregnancy.
• The Menstrual flow occurs when the egg is not fertilized by a sperm cell
• A menstrual cycle lasts for28 days
• Menarche is the first drop of menstrual blood
• Menopausal stage is the ceasing of menstruation

Phase #1:(Menstrual Phase) This happens when fertilization does not

occur. The uterine lining begins to break down and
bleeding
results. Blood, some uterine and the unfertilized egg make their
way out through the vagina. This is called the menstrual flow.
The flow lasts from 3 to 7days. It marks the beginning of the next
menstrual cycle. As menstruation is on, a new egg is starting to
mature within the ovary.

Phase #2:(Follicular Phase) The lining of

the uterus becomes thin after
menstruation. An egg in the
Ovary continues to mature. Just
before the mid-cycle, the mature
egg moves to the surface of the
ovary.

Phase #3:( Ovulation Phase) The mature

egg is released. This period is
called ovulation. The mature egg
then travels from the ovary to the
fallopian tube as it goes to the
uterus. Generally, the egg
survives within 24 to 48 hours. At
this stage, process fertilization
may take place.

Phase #4:(Luteal Phase) The lining of the uterus called the

endometrium becomes thicker in preparation for implantation
of the fertilized egg. Fertilization takes place, lining of the
uterus stays place. Likewise, no new eggs are released. If
fertilization does not take place, menstruation happens. The
next menstrual cycle is then about to begin.

Your Lesson for Today

Hi there, our lesson is still about identifying

phases of menstrual cycle.
Do you still remember the things you have learned from your?
previous module? Let’s have a review and learn some more!!!

How does the menstrual cycle work?

The menstrual cycle is essential for reproduction but it also plays a role
in the wider landscape of our health. The menstrual cycle works with a
fine balance of hormones that are released at key points in order to
stimulate phases in the cycle. The menstrual cycle is the reason we get
periods and why we experience various symptoms as menstrual
cramps. There’s much more to the menstrual cycle than menstruation,
it’s just the (very important) tip of the iceberg.

How long is the menstrual cycle?

The length of menstrual cycles varies from women to women,
and cycle to cycle. However, regular cycles are thought to be between 21 and 35 days in
length. While 28 days has often been considered the average cycle length, our latest
research into the menstrual cycle revealed that only one in eight women experience a 28-
day cycle. It’s also worth keeping in mind that some women are very regular and other
women may find their cycles frequently change. There are also medical conditions such as
PCOS and thyroid conditions which can cause fluctuation in cycle lengths and you should
speak to a healthcare professional if you think you may be affected, or have concerns
about these.

Phases of Menstrual Cycle

Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5)
Menstrual phase begins on the first day of menstruation and
lasts till the 5th day of the menstrual cycle.
The following events occur during this phase:
• The uterus sheds its inner lining of soft tissue and blood vessels which
exits the body from the vagina in the form of menstrual fluid.
• Blood loss of 10 ml to 80 ml is considered normal.
4
Name: ____________________________________ Grade and Section_________________
Name of Teacher: ____________________________

• You may experience abdominal cramps. These cramps are caused by

the contraction of the uterine and the abdominal muscles to expel the
menstrual fluid.
Follicular Phase (Day 1-13)
This phase also begins on the first day of menstruation, but it lasts till the
13th day of the menstrual cycle. The following events occur during this
phase:
• The pituitary gland secretes a hormone that stimulates the egg
cells in the ovaries to grow.
• One of these egg cells begins to mature in a sac-like-structure
called follicle. It takes 13 days for the egg cell to reach maturity.
• While the egg cell matures, its follicle secretes a hormone that
stimulates the uterus to develop a lining of blood vessels and soft
tissue called endometrium.
Ovulation Phase (Day 14)
On the 14th day of the cycle, the pituitary gland secretes a
hormone that causes the ovary to release the matured egg cell.
The released egg cell is swept into the fallopian tube by the cilia of
the fimbriae. Fimbriae are finger like projections located at the end
of the fallopian tube close to the ovaries and cilia are slender hair
like projections on each Fimbria.
The egg then travels into the uterus. It takes about three to four days for
the egg to travel toward the uterus.
Luteal Phase (Day 15-28)
This phase begins on the 15th day and lasts till the end of the cycle.
The following events occur during this phase:
• The egg cell released during the ovulation phase stays in the fallopian
tube for 24 hours.
• If a sperm cell does not impregnate the egg cell within that time, the
egg cell disintegrates.
• The hormone that causes the uterus to retain its endometrium gets
used up by the end of the menstrual cycle.
• This causes the menstrual phase of the next cycle to begin.

Menstrual cycle is when menstruation or periods regularly.

The menstrual cycle provides important body chemicals,
called hormones to keep you healthy. The rise and fall of
levels of hormones during the month is in the control of the
menstrual cycle.
The entire duration of a Menstrual cycle can be divided into
four main phases:
• Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5)
• Ovulation Phase (Day 14)
• Follicular Phase (Day 1-13)
• Luteal Phase (Day 15-28)

What can you say about the picture? What does it tell?

Yes!! It is a sign of a cycle. A cycle is a series of events that recur regularly and usually
lead back to the starting point.
Did you know that a woman’s menstruation is also a cycle?! Let’s find out!!

Try to Discover

Menstruation is part of the menstrual cycle. It is referred to as woman’s

monthly bleeding.
Menstrual cycle is when menstruation or periods come regularly. The
menstrual cycle provides important body chemicals, called hormones to keep you healthy.
The rise and fall of levels of hormones during the month is responsible in the control of the
menstrual cycle.
The levels of estrogen, the female hormones, start to rise in the first half of the cycle. The
hormones play an important role in keeping you heathy, especially by helping you build strong
bones and keep them strong as you get older. Estrogen also makes the lining of the uterus
(womb) grow and thicken. The lining of the womb is a place that will nourish the embryo if
pregnancy occurs.
The day count for menstrual cycle begins on the first day of menstruation when blood starts
to come out of the vagina. In this section, the length of menstrual cycle has been assumed to
be 28 days (which is the average among women). The entire duration of a Menstrual cycle
can be divided into four main phases:

We are still on the phases of menstrual cycle. Can you still
remember the things you have learned from the last module?
What are the phases of menstruation? Let’s review and learn
more!!!

Try to Discover
 Menstrual cycle is a monthly series of hormonal
changes leading to egg maturation and uterine
preparation for a possible pregnancy.
 Menstruation is the stage of the menstrual cycle
usually lasting from three to seven days during
which blood, some uterine tissue, and the
fertilized egg are expelled from the vagina.
 The Menstrual flow occurs when the egg is not
fertilized by a sperm cell.
 The first menstruation is called menarche.
 The cycle is the process that prepares a woman
for pregnancy.
 This cycle repeats itself after 28 days (on the
average) during the reproductive years of most
women.

The Menstrual Phase ( Menstruation ) (Day 1-5)

 It is a woman’s monthly bleeding, commonly referred to as your period.

 The first day of your menstrual cycle is day one of your period.
 On this period menstrual blood, also known as menses, is shed from the thickened
lining of your uterus known as endometrium.
 Menstrual blood is shed from the uterus through the cervix, vagina, and out through the
vaginal opening. This fluid may be bright red, light pink, or even brown.

 During menstruation, some eggs begin to mature in the ovaries. As the eggs develop,
the surrounding cells release the estrogen hormone into the bloodstream.
 This is the time when you have cramping and abdominal pains. These cramps are
caused by the contraction of the uterine and the abdominal muscles that help in
expelling the menstrual fluid.

The Follicular Phase ( Day 1-13)

 In this phase, the lining of the uterus starts to grow, or proliferate due to hormone
estrogen.
 This lining called the endometrium, starts to develop to receive a fertilized egg should
you become pregnant.
 Another hormone called the follicle –stimulating hormone (FSH), increases and in turn
stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles. Each follicle contains an egg. Late in the
follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, only a single follicle will release an egg.
 As the estrogen level increases, menstrual bleeding stops and the lining of the uterus
thicken in preparation for receiving a fertilized egg.
 The increase in estrogen also causes the pituitary gland to release a hormone that
travels to the ovaries and causes the most mature egg to be released. The Ovulation
Phase ( Day 14 )
 When a mature egg (ovum) is released from your ovarian follicle to the nearest
fallopian tube during your menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs.
 As the egg moves down the fallopian tube over several days, the lining of the uterus
continues to grow thicker and thicker.
 The egg then travels into the uterus.
 If you have regular 28- day menstrual cycle, ovulation usually occurs on day 14.
 It takes about three to four days for the egg to travel toward the uterus.
 If fertilization is to occur, it must happen within 24 hours of ovulation or the egg’s life
lapses.
 After ovulation, the luteal phase begins The Luteal Phase ( Day 15-28 )
 After ovulation occurs, the follicle develops into a hormone- producing structure called
the corpus luteum.
 The corpus luteum is a yellow structure in the ovary that produces estrogen and large
amounts of progesterone.
 This hormone signals the uterus to thicken.
 The walls of the uterus thicken with many blood vessels to provide nutrients for the
coming baby if in case a sperm fertilizes the egg.
 If the egg is not fertilized, the thickening of the uterus breaks down and comes out of
the body through the menstruation.
 Then, the menstrual cycle repeats itself.
 For females who have normal periods, the cycle is repeated four weeks or 28 days.
However, the cycle varies and is affected by a lot of factors
