Do you know that our Philippine literature is rich, our literature is in fact very
rich it has undergone several developments because of the influence from our
geography, language, and culture from our own countrymen and from foreign
invaders.
In fact, if we chap the development of our literature according to our history,
we have 10 literary periods these literary periods have different society and
different literature.

 1. Pre-Spanish period 1565 & earlier

If you think we don’t have our literature back in these times they call our
literature as folklore, our ancestors have diverse form of folklore like folk
tales, epic, folk songs.
Folk tales -made up stories about life, adventure, love, Horror, Humor
folk tales give lesson to people especially to children.
Epic- a long narrative poems that deals with heroic achievements or
events.
Examples:
1. Hudhud Hi Aliguyon- Ifugaos.
2. Agyu/ Olahing- Manobos
3. Biag ni Lam-ang – ilocanos
4. Darangen- Maranaos

Folk songs-mirrors the early life and culture of Pilipinos most of this
song are dodecasyllabic or written in 12 syllables per line

 2. Spanish period 1566-1871

When Spaniards colonized the Philippines which is also known as
Hispanization it brought several changes particular in our literature.

Christianity- was introduce and European power shape our literature


and thingking in fact the Spaniard claim that our folklore was the work
of the devil this is why most of our epics, legens, stories vanesh.

Pasyon- which commemorates the passion, death, and resurrection of

Secular prose and poetry -secular works appears in these periods
when we say secular this refers to literature which does not have any
religious themes.

 3. Period of enlightenment 1872-1898

The most important event during this Spanish colonization happened during
period of enlightenment when the propaganda movement were stablished.

 4. American period -1898-1941

During the American colonial period a new set of colonizers brought new
changes in Philippines literature the English language immensely help
cement the American influence in our culture the popular forms of literature
during this time are free verse poetry, short story, essays.

1. Jose Garcia villa- a national artist use the “free verse” and popularized the
dictum “ art for art’s sake” this means any art work should serve no purpose
ther thant being an art in itsef interms of short story.
2. Paz Marquez Benitez- was the first success of its kind “first successful
short story” meanwhile writes in ‘tagalog and regional languages” also
continued these novels in the vernacular are published in weekly magazines
like;

-the essay became a useful instrument essayist like

Another foreign country Japan conquered the Philippines literature in English
was interrupted most newspapers were not able to circulate their paper in the

-for living for propaganda – writing that came out during this period were
journalistic in nature.

 7. Periods of youth activism 1970-1980
