1 P URPOSE

This document describes LAD and RAP units and how to mount, connect, use, and
configure them.
The LAD and RAP units are very similar and there is only one user manual for both. All
differences are clearly mentioned.

2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

LAD and RAP are CUMMINS specific devices dedicated for Diesel engine monitoring.

First of all, LAD and RAP are acronyms:

• LAD = LOCAL ANALOG DISPLAY.
• RAP = REMOTE ANALOG PANEL.
Comments on the acronyms:
• DISPLAY indicates that data are displayed on a screen for the User
• PANEL refers to the visible part as both units are in fact metallic boxes to be
installed in front of a cabinet or on a panel, bulkhead, etc.
• ANALOG means that information is displayed with bargraphs and dial indicator.
But in fact, the technology is mainly digital.
• LOCAL means near the engine
• REMOTE means elsewhere

LAD and RAP units are designed for marine approved applications. But, of course they
can be used for other applications. Thus, every customer can have the benefits of a
panel that meets marine requirements, ensuring high quality, reliability, and sturdiness.

Marine rules require that Safety functions, Control functions, and Monitoring functions
must be independent. LAD and RAP are dedicated for monitoring, even though START
and STOP push buttons are on their front panel.
These push buttons have no electrical connection with the electronics of the LAD and
RAP and must be considered as “remote” push buttons which belong to the Control
system. Current passing through these push buttons is neither generated nor protected
by LAD or RAP.

LAD and RAP are based on microcontroller technology and the display is based on a
dedicated LCD monochrome screen with multicolored LED backlight.

3 H ARDWARE DESCRIPTION

3.1 Mechanical description

LAD and RAP use a common stainless steel case. Aluminium fascia thickness is 2
mm. All other parts are stainless steel, 1 mm thick.

Overall dimensions are :

L = 224 mm
H = 179 mm
D = 87.5 mm (85.5 mm behind fascia) with male + female terminal blocks
D’ = 75.5 mm (73.5 mm behind fascia) without components on back card

For more detail, authorized persons can refer to mechanical drawing 919C202.

Aluminium fascia is silk printed with some differences between LAD and RAP. A
polycarbonate glass closes the cut out in the fascia. It is glued with silicone ensuring
IP65 protection.
There are two differences between LAD and RAP: on RAP, the “Local / Remote” push
button is not present, and LAD’s “Acknowledgement” push button is replaced by the
“Dimmer” push button.

3.2 Display

There is a dedicated display with following visible dimensions : 131 x 85 mm.

It is not a TFT color screen. In fact, this display is a black LCD with “negative” glass.
A polarized glass is specially engraved for these products. There are no pixels, so the
resolution is dependent on the engraving machine. This ensures a very high graphical
quality that is impossible to reach with other technologies.
When the polarized glass is powered, it is transparent. Otherwise, it blocks light coming
from the LEDs, which are located behind the glass. The LEDs are as follows:

• Yellowish green Icons, counter, digital values

• Green Bars in normal condition
• Red Sensor fault & bars in alarm condition
• Orange (green + red) Bars in alarm acknowledged condition

Note: orange is obtained by lighting red and green together.

On RAP, brightness can be adjusted. See section 5.8

4.2 Electrical aspects

All electrical connections are located on the back card. Male connectors on the back
card mate with removable female terminal blocks with screw terminals. The maximum
wire cross section the screw terminals can accommodate is 1.5 mm².

The female terminal block connectors have retaining screws to ensure connections are
resistant to vibration.

Drawings describing electrical interfaces for LAD and RAP are shown in Appendices 2
and 3 respectively.

Cabling precautions

All analog signal wiring must be twisted shielded pair or three-core twisted wire.

All analog signal shielding must be connected carefully, without “pigtailing,” to

corresponding mechanical ground terminals.

CAN cable and connections:

CAN bus uses “LINE” topology. “STAR” or “RING” cabling is NOT AL LOWED.
A 120 Ohms termination resistor must be installed on both end nodes, but not on
intermediate nodes. If LAD or RAP is installed on an end node of a CAN network,
the 120 Ohms termination resistor must be mounted on the CAN bus terminal
block between pin L and pin H.
Although network cable type is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to
compy with the following properties :

• Individual Network Cable: cable is not used for other kinds of signals. (1)
• Simple twisted shielded pair or twinaxial cable (2 wires + shielding)
• Cable cross section is at least 2 x 0.5 mm² and less than 2 x 1 mm²
• Nominal Impedance: 120 ± 10 %
• Attenuation: < 14 dB / km at 1 MHz.

It should be noted that application of these rules does not guarantee compliance
with other maritime or application rules: for example, temperature range,
mechanical properties, behavior regarding oil or any other chemical products,
behavior regarding fire, smoke composition, etc.

(1) referring to present rules described in DS301, it is clear that in the

CANopen spirit, same cable is used for both network and power supply. In
maritime applications, this is not advised and even often not possible. Indeed,
rules emitted by Classification Societies for EMI perturbations are different for
power supply and other signals. They are much more severe for power supply
signals and a common cable would force CAN network to support these much
harder perturbations. Another major reason is that power supply can come
from different sources in a way to supply different nodes without common
mode regarding reliability and availability.

For configuration by jumpers and soldering pads, refer to sections 7 and 8.

4.3 Power supply

LAD and RAP units must be supplied by a single power supply, 24 VDC.

Power supply MUST be common for LAD and all RAPs because of Local / Remote
signal chaining.

• Voltage range: 10-31 V steady.

• Max ripple: 5%
• Power usage: 800 mA at 10 V, 280 mA at 24 V and 220 mA at 31 V.
• Protection:
Ø External fuse, 1A
Ø Protected against reverse polarity
Ø Marine approved for EMI perturbations
• Insulation groups: Mechanical ground (case)
Power supply and electronics (1)
CAN network
(1) 4-20 mA outputs have no galvanic insulation from the 24 Volt power supply,
but do have high impedance (10 MOhms) “isolation”.

5 U SING LAD AND RAP

5.1 Reading display

LAD and RAP have a common display. The visible part of the screen is 85 x 131 mm.
Seven analog channels and an hourmeter are displayed on the screen. Each analog
channel has the following:

Ø An icon, ISO standard when existing, otherwise created in the same spirit (A)
Ø Digital value (B)
Ø Two unit symbols, with only one lit ( C1 and C2). Refer to section 5.2
Ø A bar or a dial indicator (D)
Ø A sensor fault or broken wire icon (E)

There is also an hourmeter (F) and an icon for a general system fault (G).

A H D B

C1 C2 G F E

Except for engine speed, all bars and dial indicators have 10 segments. Accuracy is
5%, as segments n and previous are lit when value is between
Full Scale * (0.1 * n – 0.05) and Full Scale * (0.1 * n + 0.05)
Example : for a full scale displayed 0 to 150 °C first segment is lit above 7.5 °C, second
segment above 22.5 °C, etc.
The digital display is obviously more accurate.

For engine speed, there are 44 luminous segments corresponding to a Full Scale of 0
to 2,200 rpm. Scale (H) is silk printed in light grey below the screen’s protection glass.
This scale cannot be modified. Each segment represents 50 rpm. Resolution is + / - 25
rpm, so accuracy is + / - 1.136%. Again, the digital display is more accurate.

Note: Each channel can be enabled or disabled by software configuration. When

disabling a channel, all of its segments are OFF. Refer to section 8.

When powering on the unit, the display self-tests as follows: it shows all yellowish
green segments, red default icons and green bars and dials together for 3 to 5
seconds, and then the bars and dials turn red for 3 to 5 seconds.

After the self-test, the screen displays the current value present on the analog card
inputs, unless the configuration serial link is connected and active. In that case, the
LEDs remain red as long as the serial link is active.

5.2 Units

LAD and RAP can display values in both Imperial or metric unit sets. Only metric units
are approved by marine classification societies.
Unit set choice can be configured by software via RS 232. Values sent by LAD to RAP
via CAN bus are in unit currently configured on the LAD. RAP displays automatically all
values and icons in current unit set on the LAD.

5.3 Alarm sequence and alarm relay

Alarm status is only monitored by the LAD unit because only the LAD has access to the
analog signal inputs. The LAD broadcasts alarm status and parameter values on the
CAN bus. Each RAP receives this data, ensuring that all LAD and RAP displays are
identical.
However, a slight difference may be observed between digital values displayed on LAD
versus RAP because of the event transmission deadband. Refer to section 6, PDO
transmission.

Alarm acknowledgement is possible only on LAD for obvious safety reasons.

As specified by marine class rules, it is possible to restart the horn and buzzer after a
configurable “reiteration period” (0 to 3600 seconds, 0 meaning not active), if the horn
and buzzer have been silenced but the alarm has not been acknowledged.

There are two possible kinds of alarms: System fault and process alarm

A system fault is a fault on the monitoring equipment itself; it can be

Ø A sensor fault
Ø A broken wire or bad contact
Ø An internal default in the LAD or RAP itself

A process alarm occurs when a monitored parameter exceeds a defined limit.

On the display, behavior is different depending on the type of alarm.

A/ Process alarm:
For each channel, one alarm threshold can be software configured.
If the threshold is exceeded for a period greater than the “Time delay at appearance”
(software configurable persistence time) for that channel, an alarm is triggered for that
channel. For both LAD and RAP, actions are:

Ø Process alarm status (process alarm not acknowledged) is sent on CAN

bus (LAD only)
Ø Internal buzzer goes ON
Ø Horn relay output changes for 800 +/- 200 ms (Pulse = relay energized)
Ø Alarm relay goes to energized state in steady mode
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes to flashing red

As soon as (silence horn) push button is pressed, the internal buzzer is

stopped. The “Stop external horn” output contact also changes state for as long as the

push button is pressed.

When the “Acknowledgement” push button is pressed (only on LAD), the alarm is
acknowledged by the LAD microcontroller and following actions are done:

Ø Process alarm status (process alarm acknowledged) is sent on CAN bus

by LAD.
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes to fixed orange on LAD and RAP
When the value returns to normal (threshold not exceeded) for a period greater than the
software configurable “Time delay at disappearance” persistence time, the following
actions are done:

Ø Process alarm status (process alarm normal) is sent on CAN bus by LAD.
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes back to fixed green on LAD and RAP.
Ø Alarm relay comes back to de-energized state in steady mode on LAD and
RAP

Important:
All process alarms are inhibited when engine speed is below 500
rpm.
Gear oil pressure alarm is inhibited by a specific threshold on
engine speed. This configurable via RS232 and is set at 1 100 by
default.

B/ System alarm on one channel:

For each channel, the value must remain within a defined range. Otherwise, it is
considered faulty and an alarm is triggered. For both LAD and RAP, actions are:

Ø Internal buzzer goes ON

Ø Horn relay changes for 800 +/- 200 ms (Pulse = relay energized)
Ø Alarm relay goes to energized state in steady mode
Ø System alarm status (System alarm present) is sent on CAN bus by LAD
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes to flashing red

As soon as (silence horn) push button is pressed, the internal buzzer is

stopped. The “Stop external horn” output contact also changes state for as long as the
push button is pressed.
When the “Acknowledgement” push button is pressed (only on LAD), the alarm is
acknowledged by the microcontroller and following actions are done:
Ø System alarm status (System alarm acknow ledged) is sent on CAN bus by
LAD.
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes to fixed orange on LAD and RAP
When the system fault disappears for a sufficient time internally set (about
10 seconds), following actions are done: C
Ø System alarm status (System alarm normal) is sent on CAN bus by LAD.
Ø Segmented bar or dial indicator goes back to fixed green

5.4 Silence function and Horn relays

(silence horn) push button is present on both LAD and RAP.

Push button has a response time less than 100 ms and a debounce time of 250 ms.
Both units have an internal buzzer and two output contacts for setting and resetting an
external horn, which is not part of the product.

If an alarm appears, the internal buzzer goes ON and the “external horn set” output
contact (J14-1 / J14-2) changes state (pulses) for 800 +/- 200 ms. Using jumper SW3,
it is possible to choose normally open or normally closed contact. The corresponding
relay is normally de-energized and is energized only during the pulse.

When the silence horn push button of a unit is pressed, the internal

buzzer of that unit is stopped. The “external horn reset” output contact (J14-5 / J14-6) of
that unit changes state while the button is pressed. The corresponding relay is normally
de-energized and is energized only while the button is pressed.

5.5 Acknowledgement

The “Acknowledgement” push button is only present on LAD. This push button has a
response time less than 100 ms and a debounce time of 250 ms
If there is an alarm, the operator must come to the LAD (which is nearby the engine) to
acknowledge the alarm.

Acknowledgement is sent to all RAP units via CAN bus, inside channel status (see
section 6, PDO transmission).
Consequences of acknowledgement are described in section 5.3

5.6 START and STOP push buttons

START and STOP push buttons are present on both LAD and RAP.
These Push buttons are passive (unpowered) contacts and therefore must be supplied
externally. Refer to alarm and control drawings in Appendices 2 and 3.
Thus, response time and debounce time do not depend on LAD or RAP but on external
control system.

Depending on applications, it is sometimes necessary to maintain push button pressed

some second to trig an action. But the text silk-printed on the fascia (LAD and RAP) is
always the same, that is to says “Hold to Start” and “Hold to Stop”, regardless of the
application.

STOP command is always active on all units (LAD and RAP) regardless of
the Local / Remote status set on the LAD.

START command is active on LAD only if Local / Remote is on Local

position.

START command is active on all RAP(s) only if Local / Remote is on Remote

position.

5.7 LOCAL / REMOTE function and L / R relay

The Local / Remote push button is only present on LAD. Therefore the operator must
go to the LAD to change Local / Remote status.
This push buttons has a response time less than 100 ms and a debounce time of 250
ms.

Current status is indicated by two LEDs, one on each side of the push button.

Local status Remote status

On LAD Green LED Yellow LED
On RAP Yellow LED Green LED

Pressing the push button toggles the Local / Remote status.

Local / Remote status is used internally to allow or disallow the START command and
is also duplicated on an output relay contact (SPDT in J13-1 / J13-2 / J13-3) for external
usage.

5.8 Dimmer function

On RAP unit, the Acknowledgement push button is replaced by a Dimmer push button.

Repeatedly pressing the Dimmer push button cycles through 4 brightness levels.

When the unit is powered on, brightness is automatically set to level 4 (brightest).
Repeatedly pressing the Dimmer push button will generate the following sequence:

Level 4 è press è Level 1 è press èLevel 2 è press è Level 3 è press è Level 4

Note: This effect is realized by using the microcontroller to generate a PWM signal
which is transmitted to the screen LED supply via optocoupler and PNP transistor.

5.9 Additional relay for engine speed limit

An additional relay is present on back card. It is a SPDT 5A, 30 VDC model. The three
pin of its change over contact are available on connector J14, pins 7, 8, 9.

This relay is driven by the CPU card depending on a supplementary speed limit which
does not trig any alarm. It can be used for external information or control.
Settings for this speed limit are done by software and are described in section 8.

Remark : mandatory control functions required by classification societies CANNOT be

achieved with this output relay, as it is part of the monitoring system. It can be used for
other control function.

6 CAN OPEN COMMUNICATION

The aim of this section is not to describe completely a CANopen protocol. Refer to
CANopen rules and documentations. The information contained within is necessary and
sufficient for a client who wants to use data transmitted on the bus by LAD unit.

This protocol is not fully compliant with CANopen requirements as some mandatory
features are not im plemented. But, all features implemented are fully compliant with
CANopen protocol.

NODE_ID
This is the unit address. It is configurable by dip switches on CPU card from 1 to
63 (6 dip switches for 6 bits).

RAP is in fact a kind of spy which is only able to listen to the LAD on the same
network. RAP does not transmit any messages. In order to filter messages on the
CAN network, it is necessary to give all RAPs on a network the same Node_ID as
the LAD on the network. RAP uses it only to filter messages.

If Clarine is used, the Node_ID must be chosen from the following values: 8 to 39.
Advised values are 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36 in order to have channel numbers
from 1 to 8 in Clarine. (See “PDO transmission” below)

BAUDRATE
This is the transmission speed, which has to be the same for all nodes connected
to the network.
It is configurable by 2 dip switches on the CPU card. Possible baudrates are:

Ø 50 kbit per second

Ø 100 kbit per second
Ø 125 kbit per second
Ø 250 kbit per second

NMT
LAD and RAP are slaves with self start capability. When powered on, each unit
sends a message to indicate it is now on the network with COB_ID 0x80 +
NODE_ID.

LIFE GUARDING
LAD unit supports Node Guarding (answer) using COB_ID of pre-defined
connection set. Thus 0x700 + NODE_ID .
LAD is not able to guard other nodes.
RAP does not currently support Node Guarding, but it does self-check
communications. If no PDO is received after 10 seconds, the buzzer and horn
are triggered and the general system fault icon flashes.

SDO
LAD and RAP do not currently support any SDO messages, either in
transmission or reception.

PDO transmission

LAD is a PDO producer. It transmits process data. There are 8 channels to be

transmitted with 8 different COB_ID, in accordance with CANopen rules.
COB_ID is defined as follows:

COB_ID = 0x300 + (0x10 * NODE_ID) + Channel number

Channel numbers are defined as follows with the following properties:

Nb Channel Physical scale Digital scale 1LSB = ?

1 Left TC outlet 0 / 800 °C 0 / 8,000 0.1 °C

2 Right TC outlet 0 / 800 °C 0 / 8,000 0.1 °C
3 Lube oil pressure 0 / 1,000 kPa 0 / 10,000 0.1 kPa
4 Gear oil pressure 0 / 3,276 kPa 0 / 32,760 0.1 kPa
5 Cooling water outlet -50 / +150 °C -500 / +1,500 0.1 °C
6 Engine speed 0 / 2,200 rpm 0 / 22,000 0.1 rpm
7 Battery voltage 0 / 32 Volts 0 / 320 0.1 V
8 Hour meter 0 / 99,999 h see details 0.1 h

There are three reasons to initiate a transmission

Ø All channels are transmitted cyclicly from 1 to 8 (and back to 1) with a rate
of 1 channel per second.

Ø If status changes for one channel, this channel is transmitted “immediately”.

Ø If one channel value changes more than its specified deadband, this
channel is transmitted “immediately”.

Deadbands are defined as follows:

Nb Channel Deadband in LSB

1 Left TC outlet 20 LSB = 2°C

2 Right TC outlet 20 LSB = 2°C
3 Lube oil pressure 50 LSB = 5 kPa
4 Gear oil pressure 100 LSB = 10 kPa
5 Cooling water outlet 10 LSB = 1°C
6 Engine speed 40 LSB = 4 rpm
7 Battery voltage 2 LSB = 0.2 Volt
8 Hour meter 1 LSB = 0.1 hour

For channels 1 to 7

Value is a data type 3 (integer 16, -32,768 / + 32,767) in position 0 in the data field.
Status is coded as a data type 6 (unsigned 16, 0 / 65,535) in position 2 in the data
field. Bits are used as follows:

Bit 0 Low over range 0 = normal

Bit 1 High over range 0 = normal
Bit 2 Not used
Bit 3 Not used
Bit 4 Process alarm status 0 = normal, 1 = alarm
Bit 5 Process acknowledgement status 0 = ack, 1 = not ack
Bit 6 System alarm status (Break) 0 = normal, 1 = alarm
Bit 7 System acknowledgement status 0 = ack, 1 = not ack
Bit 8 Not used
Bit 9 Not used
Bit 10 Unit (only in speed channel) 0 = metric, 1 = imperial
Bit 11 Not used
Bit 12 Not used
Bit 13 Not used
Bit 14 Not used
Bit 15 Channel installed 0 = not installed, 1 = installed
For channel 8 (hour meter)

Hour meter range is 0 to 99,999 hours. It is impossible to transmit this whole

value in a single 16 bit object.
In the first object in position 0 in the data field, the last 3 digits multiplied by ten are
transmitted (because the resolution is set at 0.1 hour). So, the digital range is 0 to
9,999 for this object. It is less than 32,767 and data type 3, which is the standard
for Clarine, can be kept.
Thousands of hours, that is to say, the first 2 digits, are transmitted in the status.
Status is still coded as a data type 6 (unsigned 16, 0 / 65,535) in position 2 in the
data field. Bits are used as follows:

Bit 0 to 7 Not used

Bit 8 to 14 thousands of hours from 0 to 99
Bit 15 Channel installed 0 = not installed, 1 = installed
Example : for an hour meter value 08,102.5 trans mission is :
Value 0000 0100 0000 0001, Status 1000 1000 0000 0000

Note: Transmission on the CAN bus is in INTEL mode.

All most significant bits are transmitted first
All least significant bytes are transmitted first.

9 A CCESSIBLE SETTINGS FOR MANUFACTURER

Some parameters are only accessible to CMR. In order to change them, the software
must be modified. In such cases, Cummins is responsible for maintenance and part
numbers to be ordered in case of replacement.

The following parameter can be adjusted by hardware modifications on

request:

Ø Different number of teeth on flywheel (different from 149 or 168)

The following parameters can be adjusted by software modifications on

request:

Ø Sensor scale
Ø Displayed scale (however, it is not possible to display one scale in imperial units
and another one in international units)
Ø Hysteresis for alarm thresholds (0 to 5%)
Ø Function of engine speed for lube oil pressure threshold
Ø Passwords :
• Access level 1 No password
• Access level 2 cummins

Calibration

There is a hardware calibration by potentiometer only for gain, for each channel, except
battery voltage, because there is no 4 to 20 mA output for this channel. This calibration
does not affect the digital display but only the 4 to 20 mA outputs. As there is no offset
setting, gain is set at the value which requires the best accuracy, according to
Cummins specification. That is to say :
Engine speed 1800 rpm and 1500 rpm
Lube oil pressure 187-200 kPa ref (27-29 psig)
Gear oil pressure 517 kPa ref (75 psig)
Turbo outlet (L: and R) 593 deg C (1100 F)
Cooling water temperature 97 deg C (207 °F)
Then, with a special tool, dispayed value are corrected by a least square method based
on 3 to 6 points depending on adjusted channel. This ensure a great accuracy, generaly
less than one or two LSB displayed, except for turbocharger temperatures that are
measured with type K thermocouples not linearized.

During normal use, an internal self-calibration is done every 100 measurements.
