This document summarizes a study on grade 9 students' perceptions of limited face-to-face classes at Lagundi CCL National High School during the 2021-2022 school year. The study aims to determine if students and teachers are prepared for limited in-person learning and the importance of this model for students. Literature is reviewed on the importance of carefully planning school reopenings, challenges with muffled audio due to masks, and differing parental and student opinions on limited face-to-face classes. The purpose is to discover students' perceptions of their experience with the new limited in-person learning format.

GRADE 9 STUDENT’S PERCEPTIONS OF THE LIMITED FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES IN LCCLNHS

Introduction

Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge,

developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself

or others intellectually for mature life and it is defined as the process of gaining

knowledge. Schooling is one of the most affected aspects of human life due to

coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Since the rise and threat of the

pandemic, many countries around the world have decided to temporarily close schools

that have affected millions of students. Consequently, students who are mostly children

have been facing a learning crisis due to the pandemic.

Face-to-face learning is an instructional method where course content and

learning material are taught in person to a group of interaction between a learner and an

instructor it is the most traditional type of learning instruction learners benefit from a

greater level of as well in face to face learning, students are held accountable for their

progress at the class’s specific meeting date and time. Face to face learning ensure a

better understanding and recollection of lesson content and given class members a

chance to bond with one another. Face to Face learning is essentially a teacher-

centered method of education, and tends to vary widely among cultures. Many modern

education systems have largely shifted away from traditional face-to-face forms of

educational instruction, in favor of individual students’ needs.

School reopening for face-to-face interactions must be carefully planned to

ensure the safety of students as well as teachers and school staff in a staged fashion

especially in following physical distancing. Planning and execution of school health

protocols during this pandemic must be supported by the truthful data being given by

various institutions. Last 11 December 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) has

published a checklist to support school reopening and the preparation for the possible

resurgence of COVID-19. WHO cited that ‘The checklist is aligned with, and builds

upon, existing COVID-19-related WHO guidelines and is structured around protective

measures related to: 1) hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette; 2) physical distancing;

3) use of masks in schools; 4) environmental cleaning and ventilation; and 5) respecting

procedures for isolation of all people with symptoms.’ The checklist helps policymakers

and school officials to enhance compliance and adherence to public health protocols in

the time of the pandemic.

DepEd – DOH Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1, s. 2021, September 27, 2021.

Subject: “OPERATION GUIDELINES ON THE IMPLEMENTION OF LIMITED FACE-

TO-FACE LEARNING MODALITY”

The researcher’s notice that face to face classes is very important in every

students also in Grade 9 students in Lagundi CCL NHS which is our subject. This study

will aim to determine the Grade 9 students’ perception of the limited face-to-face

Classes in LCCLNHS. The researchers will determine if the students and teachers are

ready and prepared in limited face-to-face classes. There are 30 students in LCCLNHS

which all of them are Grade 9 students and utilize as respondents.

This study focus on the perception of grade 9 students in the limited face-to-face

classes in Lagundi CCL National High School. Grade 9 students of Lagundi CCL

National High School during the S.Y. 2021-2022 is the subject of the study.

In face-to-face classes the researcher’s state some of the challenges that

encounter by learners. Students cannot clearly see what are the written on the board

due the 1 meter distance/ physical distancing. We also encounter that some students

cannot clearly hear what the teacher saying because of the face mask. Do not also

have enough learning materials. Many of the student are not yet ready in face-to-face

learning. And last is the learners hardly finish the activities given by the teacher

because of the time limit.

Purpose of the study

The purpose of this qualitative study is to discover the perceptions of Grade 9

students in the implemented limited face-to-face classes in Lagundi-CCL NHS. Our aim

in the study is to determine the importance of limited face-to-face learning for every

Grade 9 students who experiences it.

Literature Reviews

Philip Sarmiento, Cora Sarmiento, and Rina Tolentino (2021) discussed on an

article titled “Face-to-face classes during COVID-19: a call for deliberate and well-
planned school health protocols in the Philippine context”, that the School reopening for

face-to-face interactions must be carefully planned to ensure the safety of students as

well as teachers and school staff in a staged fashion especially in following physical

distancing. Planning and execution of school health protocols during this pandemic

must be supported by the truthful data being given by various institutions. Last 11

December 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published a checklist to

support school reopening and the preparation for the possible resurgence of COVID-

19. WHO cited that ‘The checklist is aligned with, and builds upon, existing COVID-19-

related WHO guidelines and is structured around protective measures related to: 1)

hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette; 2) physical distancing; 3) use of masks in

schools; 4) environmental cleaning and ventilation; and 5) respecting procedures for

isolation of all people with symptoms.’ The checklist helps policymakers and school

officials to enhance compliance and adherence to public health protocols in the time of

the pandemic.

Chenelle (2021) discussed the fast fact about limited face-to-face classes pilot

run. Students in approved areas have the option to participate in the pilot run or to

remain in an online learning setup. The educational sector made it clear that “no learner

shall be forced to attend the pilot implementation of face-to-face classes.” Educators

who will participate in the pilot run are required to be fully vaccinated to ensure safety.

And she state the statement of our DepEd secretary Leonor Briones (2021) about the

pilot implementation of face-to-face classes. “Kung safe ang pilot and if it is effective,

then we will gradually increase the number of schools. Ang mahalaga, babantayan natin
ang risk assessment. Kapag may pagbabago sa risk assessment, talagang ititigil natin,"

she said

Garma (2022) said that there is a problem in “muffled effect” of face masks,

affects how students hear their teachers’ learning instructions. “The difficulty to hear the

learners and the teachers…yung [the] audibility ng kanilang [of their] instruction is really

hampered or impeded because of the muffled effect of the face mask.” And he also

added “Yan po yung isang bagay na titignan natin  [That is one of the things we are

looking into] on really how to address this issue.”

Furthermore, Argosino (2021) state the different opinion of Parents, students on

limited face-to-face classes. After almost two years of online classes and modular

learning, the Department of Education (DepEd) has recently revealed that they have

picked 90 public schools and are optimistic that they will reach the 100 schools

required for the Nov. 15 pilot run of limited face-to-face sessions. While the pilot test

is limited to public schools in low-risk locations, the DepEd also said that pilot in-

person learning sessions in Metro Manila is also possible.

Face-to-face class should be implemented because it’s hard for students with

no gadgets and load for internet access to attend online classes, Renier’s teachers

are also strict and they give failing grades if no tasks or activities are submitted,

Benzon (2021).
According to Parpan (2021) face-to-face classes help students understand

each lesson more effectively. She also added “During in-person classes we had the

chance to study each lesson for a week which made it easier for us to understand

almost everything. But when online classes came, all we did was cram and rely on

YouTube videos to teach us lessons we don’t understand”.
