Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 4: I. Objectives

This lesson plan outlines comparing fractions for a 4th grade math class. It includes objectives of comparing fractions using illustrations, with the same denominator, and in word problems. The lesson proper demonstrates comparing fractions using drawn rectangles and illustrations. Examples are provided such as 1/4 < 3/4 and 2/5 > 1/5. Students observe that when comparing fractions with the same denominator, the numerator determines which is bigger. They then practice comparing fractions and solving word problems involving fractions.

Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 4

I. Objectives

Within the period, Grade 4 students are expected to

A. Compare fractions using an illustration
B. Compare fractions with the same denominator and;
C. Apply the concept of comparing fractions in solving word problems

II. Content and Materials:

a. Content: Comparing Fractions

b. Material: Television
c. References: https://www.mathsisfun.com/comparing-fractions.html
d. Values Integration: Patience

III. Procedure

a. Preperation

1. Review
Before we move on to our topic let’s pray
Good Morning class!
How are you?
Thank you too
Do you still remember these signs? < , > and =?
What do we call this symbol? <
How about this one? >
Well how about this? =

If I compare 12 to 8 what symbol should I use?

If I compare 26 to 26 what symbol should I use?
And what if I compare 9 to 27 what symbol should I use?

2. Motivation
Now I have these pictures of fruits and veggies. If you think that pictures of
fruits and veggies are greater than the other one clap (2) two times and if you
think that the other one is less than the oher column clap (3) three times. If it’s
equal then clap (10) times

B. Lesson Proper

Today, were gonna use the comparing fractions with our comparing skills. Remember,
we can only compare fractions if we are referring to the same thing. Say for example, is
½ of the chalkboard the same with ½ of the Science Book? Why?

Now, in your notebooks, I want you all to draw a rectangle and then show ¼ using that
rectangle.

Done? It should look like this.

Then draw another rectangle which has the same size with your first rectangle. Show ¾
using the same rectangle that you drew.

Now let us compare these two fractions

Which is bigger?

Now, using the same rectangles, illustrate 2/5 and 1/5

Who would like to show their illustration on the board

Which is bigger?

Let us illustrate 3/8 and 5/8

Who would like to volunteer?

Let us have another, illustrate 2/3 and 2/3

Who would like to illustrate it on the board?

Now which is bigger?

Let us have the summary of the fractions that we had illustrated.

1. ¼<¾
2. 2/5 > 1/5
3. 3/8 < 5/8
4. 2/3 = 2/3

C. Comparison and Abstraction

Now , what can you observe on the fractions that we have compared?
What can you say about their denominators?
What does numerator tells us in comparing fractions with the same denominator?

D. Generalization
How are we going to compare fractions with the same denominator?

E. Apllication
Let us answer the following questions.
1. Which is longer, a stick that is 5/4 meters long or a stick that is 3/4 meters long?
2. Joanna ate 2/8 of the pizza, while James ate 5/8 of the pizza. Who ate less?

IV. Evaluation
B. Answer the following word problem

1. Henry needs the longest lasso for his project. He has red, pink and blue lasso. The red
lasso is 7/12 meters long. The pink lasso is 11/12 meters long and the blue lasso is 12/12
meters long. Which lasso shoud he use and why?
