Write short answers.


1. What is tourniquet?

Ans Tourniquet is a bandage tightly tide over the wound to stop bleeding.

2. Which articles could be used as a splint in case of a fracture?

Ans. Newspaper, magazine, a piece of cardboard or pillow around the injured bone can also act as a
splint.

3. What is a sling?

Ans. A sling is a bandage passing over the shoulder to support an injured upper limb.

4. Name the disease caused by a virus carried by dogs and cats.

Ans. The disease caused by a virus carried by dogs and cats are rabies.

5. When someone's cloth catches fire we must not let him run around in panic. Why?

Ans. If a person's cloth catches fire do not allow him to run around in panic because this fans the flames.

D Answer the following questions


1. What first aid should be given in case of minor wound?

Ans. Following first aid should be given in case of minor wounds.

i) Wash away all dirt around the wound.

ii) Clean the affected area with cotton wool soaked in an antiseptic lotion.

iii) Place a thick pad of cotton wool or sterilized gauze on the wound and press it with thumb and
finger. This will stop bleeding.

2. How would you help someone with a bleeding nose?

Ans. 1) Try to make the person sit up straight.


2) Drop the head slightly forward.

3) Apply finger and thumb pressure on the soft part of nostrils at least 10 minutes.

4) Make the person breathe through the mouth.

3. What is splint? How and why should it be used?

Ans. Splint is a piece of wood or cardboard used to hold a broken bone in position.

A splint prevents movement and helps the broken bone to heal.

4. We must not prick blisters .why?

Ans. We must not prick blisters because an open blister is an open wound & it can catch infection easily.

5. How will you put out a fire caused by defective wiring?

Ans . If a fire has been caused by defective wiring then immediately turn off the main switch &
smoother the fire by throwing sand .Also use a fire extinguisher.

6. What first aid should be given in case of an animal bite?

Ans. i) Wash the wound with soap and water to remove germs as the virus which causes rabies may be

carried in the saliva of an infected animal.

ii) Apply an antiseptic lotion to prevent infection.

iii) Bandage the wound with a sterile gauze.

iv)Rush the victim to a doctor.
