1 Introduction

The test appliance GM-610 is a measurement system for testing the electrical
safety of medical technical and other technical appliances. The measurements and
tests correspond to the IEC 60601, IEC 62353 and VDE 0701-0702. The standards
EN 61010 are also supported.

To control the GM-610 in PC operation a 100% compatible IBM computer with

industrial standards is needed. The communication between the PC and the
GM-610 follows through the serial interface and/or USB interface.

With the GM-610 the following tests are realized:

Line voltage measurement

Current measurement
Power measurement
Leakage measurements
Alternative leakage current measurement
Protective earth resistance measurement
Insulation resistance measurement
Difference current measurement

The measuring values of the leakage current measurements become automatic,

suitable of the respective norm calculated to the normative demanded value of the
mains voltage.

With GM-610 the separate ac/dc measurement (RMS), of the patient leakage and
patient auxiliary current can be carried out accordingly to the demands of the
standards.

GM-610 can be used as stand-alone unit or PC operated. With this appliance, you
can do single measurements or you can run automatic test instructions.

The operation of the Safety Tester is touch-controlled and with a few decisions the
different functions of the equipment become activated.

In a non-volatile memory of GM-610 can be stored up to 200 test protocols.

User can create tests with up to 50 of his own test instructions that are saved in a
non-volatile memory.

Warning – Safety notice!

When taking measurements to test electrical safety, the device to be tested
is operated with mains voltage. This creates an increased risk of injury from
connected devices waiting to be tested.

With certain measurements, there may be an internally generated mains

voltage or insulation test voltage at the component sockets.

Attention!

The measurement of the leakage current can be measured

only in a TN System.

Attention – Hints for the PC operation

After measurements with main voltage on the socket, the main voltage
will be not switched off. The device to be tested not has
to be disconnected.

You can start functional tests without any delay. The main voltage
can be switched off by using the test step SPL50
at the end of the test sequence.

Attention - Hint!

Note the safety tester annex.

4 Functional description

The GM-610 is a microprocessor-controlled device for measuring insulation resistance,

protective earth resistance and leakage current of medical technical and other electrical
equipment.

The CPU board controls all the necessary paths, switching for the various
measurements. The measuring paths are switched by relays installed on relay boards.

The test power board generates test voltage for the insulation resistance measurement
(500 V dc), as well as an internal test voltage for the leakage current – alternative
measurement. This board also contains the RS-232 and USB Interface for the
communication to an external PC. A transformer generates the test voltage for the
protective earth resistance measurement. This transformer can supply test current of
25 A.

All measurements (leakage current, insulation resistance, and protective earth

resistance) generate a voltage drop across a resistor (1 kOhm +/- 1 % or 2 kOhm +/-
1 %), which amplified using a chopper amplifier. The amplified voltage signal will be
transformed by a RMS converter, which generates RMS value from the AC voltage.
This DC-voltage is digitized using an A/D converter.

The mains voltages are connected, via a separate, high-resistance input (10 MOhm),
to the chopper amplifier. Then they follow the same way as the other measured values.

The digital value is transmitted serially via digital isolator to the CPU board. The CPU
board converts the value and transmits it to the PC.

It is also possible to use the GM-610 to perform measurements in the IT system, and
for measurements on permanently connected devices. After the power is switched on,
the GM-610 measures the line voltage from the phase conductor to the PE-conductor
contact, and from the directly grounded (N) conductor to the PE-conductor contact.

In this manner, the GM-610 checks whether a phase/zero-sequence net or an

IT system is present. In the event that a phase/zero sequence network is present, the
system then determines whether the line voltage of net carries 115 V or 230 V.

10
S.P.L. GM-610 User manual

To set the GM-610 into operation, first connect it to the power supply.

For a PC-controlled measurement connect it to the PC via the USB interface cable
supplied.

Insert the test-probe lead (supplied with the GM-610) into the jack labelled. This
jack is used for measurement of protective earth resistance and for measurement
of enclosure leakage current. To perform tests involving the patient applied part,
insert the required test leads into the test jacks, which have been labelled “Patient
applied part”.

The GM-610 is now ready to perform tests for the electrical safety of medical
technical appliances.

4.1 Specific features of standard

The measurements of the leakage current in accordance to IEC 60601 require a

TN system as a voltage supply for the test voltage.

With GM-610, measurements can be carried out at devices with fixed protective
earth conductor.

4.2 Additional functions

With GM-610 the separate ac/dc measurement (RMS), of the patient leakage and
patient auxiliary current can be carried out accordingly to IEC 60601. Furthermore,
the difference current can be measured.

4.3 Standardization

The measuring values of the leakage current measurements become automatic,

suitable of the respective norm calculates to the normative demanded value of the
mains voltage.

The maximum amount the user can export from Test module software are 50 Test
instructions to the file called GM610imp.pvs placed in ConActX folder. One test
instruction may have a maximum of 200 functions.

The file GM610imp.pvs with user test instructions can be imported to GM-610 with
GMExport-Script called from ConActX Test module and the function number 21 –
SPL PVS-Imp. 1.
All user test instructions saved in GM-610 will be deleted!

Notice: all test protocols and all user test instructions saved in GM-610 will
be deleted during the calibration.

5.8 General Hints

All test instructions will run twice, so that the measurement of the leakage current
occurs in both phase positions. The higher value in each case is documented in the
test protocol.

At the end of every test instruction the measurement of the line voltage, the current
consumption and the power consumption is carried out. In addition, the test object
is switched on. This also happens after equivalent measurements.

By measurements, which demand an isolated installation of the test object, this has
absolutely to be kept. Isolated installation means that no other connections to PE
exist and the tester cannot touch the test object during the test.

5.10 PC-controlled

GM-610 is controlled via the RS-232 interface or via the USB interface.

For the operation of the device’s USB interface an operating system specific driver
is required. This driver is provided on the S.P.L. product CD.

It is recommended to set the COM port provided by the system control to COM1 –
COM4 and if present please disable the energy management.

The USB device driver usually must be installed separately for every USB port on
a PC.
