diameter is to be 10 times that of the wire diameter. The maximum shear
stress in the material of the spring is to be 80 N/mm2. The stiffness of the
spring is 20 N/mm deflection and modulus of rigidity = 8.4  104 N/mm2.
Calculate the following:

(i) Coil diameter. (5)

(ii) Wire diameter. (5)

(iii) Number of coils in the spring. (3)

12. (a) (i) With suitable sketches, obtain an expression to satisfy true rolling
motion of a vehicle. (7)

(ii) Elaborate upon the constructional details and working principle of

Ackermann Steering System. (6)

Or

(i) A LCV has pivot pins 1.37m apart, the length of each track arm is
0.17 m and the track rod is behind the front axle and is 1.17 m long.
Determine the wheel base which will give true rolling for all wheels
when the vehicle is turning so that the inner wheel stub axle is 60°
to the centre line of the vehicle. (7)

(ii) Calculate the gear ratio of the steering gear box which requires 1.25
turns of the steering wheel to move the drop arm through 30° from
its centre position to full lock in one direction. (6)
