Lesson 1
How to Define Minimum Sizes, Maximum Sizes, and Growth Rate – Lesson 1
What is minimum and maximum size?
It is the allowable size for smallest and largest element in the meshing.
The elements generated on the surface of geometry always be tangential to the surface of this geometry.
What should be minimum size for the element?
It can be any but should not be less than “0.01mm” for accurately capture the geometry surface resolution.
What should be maximum size for the element?
It depends on the geometry we are meshing. For instance, if you are model an internal flow than maximum
size shouldn’t be less than 10% of the distance across the cross-section of Pipe through which fluid will flow.
This ensures sufficient resolution of the flow.
Growth Rate
This option is used to control the rate at which the mesh transitions between regions of different surface
and volume size.
Lower Value: Finer mesh maintained further away. (But this increases overall computational cost). Use body
of influence if growth rate=1.05 is required.
More than growth rate=1.2 will lead to coarser mesh resolution.
More than growth rate=1.4 should be rarely used.
We learn that “Importance of generating high quality surface mesh and its effects on generating volume
mesh.”
