Each computer self-diagnoses its control system. Failure codes will be indicated if improper conditions
are found.
System / Computer Description
Antilock Braking System This controls the ABS, TCS and DSC system. It maintains stable driving
(ABS) / Traction Control performance by reduction of wheel locking at the time of braking, tire spinning at
System (TCS) the time of starting and wheel sideway skid at the time of driving. This is
realized by controlling the engine and brakes automatically based on detected
speeds of each wheel and changes of vehicle speed.
Electronic Automatic This controls the auto-air-conditioned system. It maintains comfortable room
Temperature Control temperature that you set by controlling airflow volume and airflow temperature
(EATC) based on detected room temperature, outside temperature and sunlight radiation
volume.
Electronic-Controlled This controls the electronic controlled power steering system. It lightens steering
Power Steering (EPS) operation for quicker response when driving slowly and makes the steering
wheel operation heavier for stable driving performance when driving fast.
Generic electric module This controls of electrically operated devices, such as auto-lights, auto-wipers,
(GEM) door locks and power windows.
Instrument Cluster (IC) This controls instruments and gauges on the instrument panel, including
warning lights and warning buzzers.
Remote Keyless Entry This controls Advanced Keyless Entry and Starting System.
(RKE)
Powertrain Control This controls the engine by injecting fuel and igniting the spark plugs at the right
Module (PCM) timings depending on driving conditions. It also controls the automatic
transmission on a vehicle with an automatic transmission that does not have an
automatic transmission computer.
Restraint Control Module This controls SRS airbags. It deploys the airbags to reduce injuries to the head
(RCM) and chest of the driver and passenger during the moment that a strong impact is
experienced on the front or the side of the vehicle.
Transmission Control This controls the automatic transmission by automatically selecting the most
Module (TCM) appropriate gear depending on driving conditions.
4X4 Control Module This distributes driving torque to the front and rear wheels adequately depending
(4X4M) on the road and driving conditions.
Headlamp Control This controls the steering operation angle. It also controls the AFS, Adaptive
Module (HCM) Front Lighting System, which adjusts the horizontal low-beam-headlight angle
depending on vehicle speed. This module controls the Auto-Leveling function,
which adjusts vertical headlight angel depending on the body height of the
vehicle.
Intelligent Cruise Control This controls Mazda Pre-Crush Safety System and Mazda Radar Cruise Control
Module (ICCM) System. It recognizes vehicles ahead of your vehicle, oncoming vehicles and
foreign objects on the road. It warns you (with a warning beep, warning light, or
even slight braking) if it detects a possible collision. It will even slow down the
vehicle and activate the pre-crush seatbelts to reduce possible damages if it
determines a collision is eminent. It also adjusts the distance between your
vehicle and the vehicle in front of you by measuring the distance between your
vehicle and the vehicle speed in front of you using a radar system.
Lighting Control Module This controls the Auto-Light System and Rain Sensor for the wipers. It
(LCM) automatically turns on and off the lights, such as headlights, small lights, road
lights, taillights and license plate lights, based on the information detected by the
light sensor, which detects the sunlight. It also automatically controls the front
wipers based on the information detected by the rain sensor, which detects
rainfall.
Left Power Sliding Door This controls opening and closing of the left power sliding door.
Module (LPSDM)
Right Power Sliding This controls opening and closing of the right power sliding door.
Door Module (RPSDM)
Lift-gate/Trunk Module This controls opening and closing of the power rear gate.
(LTM)
Amplifier Module (AM) This controls the volume and quality of the audio signals.

Input/Output Test
These tests diagnose running conditions of parts that control the engine.
Test Name Description
Throttle Position Sweep This test checks to see if the sensor detection of the throttle angle is correct by
Test checking the throttle angle signal based on what engine load is present while
driving. If there is a problem, your vehicle may face improper acceleration,
unstable idling and harsh/erratic shifting (for automatic transmission).
Idle Air Control System This test checks if the Idle Air Control System, which stabilizes the idling speed,
Test is operating properly. If there is a problem, your vehicle may exhibit unstable
idle speed, harsh downshifts and others concerns. (It also controls airflow to the
engine supplied from other than the throttle. When the engine is cold, it raises
the engine speed to stabilize idling speed. It also raises the engine speed to
stabilize idle speed when the engine load is too high due to high electrical use,
such as air-conditioner.)
Key On Engine Running This test inspects input devices (sensors), output devices and related circuitry.
Test

PCM Data Monitor Test

This function allows you to read output values of major engine controlling components at the time of
idling. You may confirm each component’s condition by comparing these values with criterion values.
Monitoring Name Description
Throttle Position (TP) This indicates the throttle-opening angle at the time of idling. If this angle is
abnormal, your vehicle may exhibit unstable idle speed, possible engine stall
and poor starting of the vehicle.
Heated Exhaust Gas The signals from the oxygen sensor are used to detect oxygen concentration in
Oxygen Sensor the exhaust gas. Based on these signals the PCM adjusts fuel injection amount
(O2S11) to ensure the cleanest possible exhaust gas. If these signals are abnormal,
you may exhibit poor/dirty exhaust emission, damage to the oxygen sensor and
catalytic converter due to extreme heat.
Spark Advance This indicates ignition timing control values which are essential to operate the
(SPARKADV) engine properly. If this value is abnormal, you may exhibit low engine power,
knocking and abnormal vibration of the engine.
Engine Revolutions Per This indicates engine idle speed. If this speed is abnormal, you may exhibit
Minute (RPM) unstable idling and poor fuel economy.
Generator Output This indicates the voltage generated by the alternator. If this voltage is
Voltage (ALTT V) abnormal, it will likely cause a discharged battery and unstable idling.
Transmission Fluid This indicates the temperature of the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) at the
Temperature (TFT) time of the Mazda Vehicle Check-up. If this temperature is abnormal, you may
exhibit erratic shifting, harsh shifting and poor fuel economy.
Engine Coolant This indicates the temperature of the engine coolant at the time of the Mazda
Temperature (ECT) Vehicle Check-up. If this temperature is abnormal, you may exhibit unstable
idling, low power, hard engine starting and poor fuel economy.
