UWA International Student Award (2022) [F22/120]

The University of Western Australia (‘the University’) provides fee discount


scholarships to encourage and assist students from eligible countries to pursue
an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification at the University.

Scholarship conditions

1. Title: UWA International Student Award (2022)

The University Policy on: Establishment and Award of


Scholarships and the conditions that follow.
2. Governed by:

3. Purpose: To encourage and assist students from eligible countries


to pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification
at the University.

4. Number of scholarships: 1. Offers are made subject to the number of awards


available, which is subject to change.

2. Normally, the Scholarship will be awarded to all eligible


students seeking to take-up the bursary.

5. Value: 1. $5,000 per annum.


2. The annual value is based on a student enrolled on a
standard full-time load of 24 points per semester.
3. Where students are affected by unit sequencing or
other circumstances resulting in a reduced load, the
University will calculate the fee reduction on a pro-rata
basis.

6. Duration of scholarship: 1. The maximum duration of the scholarship is for the


standard full-time duration of the recipient’s accepted
course for which the scholarship is offered.2
2. Where an awardee receives an offer of a place into an
undergraduate degree course, including an assured
pathway into a postgraduate degree course, the duration

of the award is for the undergraduate degree course only.
3. Where an awardee receives an offer of a place into a
combined undergraduate and masters degree course,
the scholarship duration is for the combined standard for
-time duration of the whole course, including the
undergraduate and postgraduate components.
4. Where the recipient receives approval to undertake
study at a reduced load, the scholarship duration will be
extended for the number of semesters of reduced load up
to a maximum of two additional semesters.
5. Where a recipient transfers course to another eligible
course, the recipient will continue to receive the
scholarship for the original duration or the duration of the
new course, whichever is shorter, and will take into
account any entitlement received at the time of transfer.

Notwithstanding clause 6.1, End on Honours is an extension of the requisite
Bachelor’s course and the additional duration will be added onto the
scholarship.

7. Concurrent scholarship: The scholarship may not be held concurrently with any
other UWA issued tuition fee reduction, academic
scholarship or award.

8. Eligibility requirements: To be eligible to be considered for the scholarship,


candidates must—
(a) meet the eligibility criteria specified in Schedule 1
(Eligible Courses) and Schedule 2 (Eligible Citizenship);
and
(b) have applied to commence an eligible course3
specified in schedule 1 of these conditions in 2022;
(c) not previously commenced and not completed an
undergraduate or postgraduate course at UWA

Other structured courses of study offered by the University that does
not lead to a qualification defined by the Australian Qualifications
Framework is not considered an eligible course.

9. Eligibility to take up: 1. Subject to clause 17, the scholarship must be taken up
in the semester for which it is awarded.
2. To be eligible to take up the scholarship, an awardee
must be enrolled—
(a) full-time unless the administration body is satisfied
that there are exceptional circumstances4 which preclude
full-time enrolment.;5
(b) as an international student on an Australian student
visa (subclass 500) or other visa category with study
rights;6 and
(c) in the course for which the scholarship is awarded in

accordance with Schedule 1.

Exceptional circumstances include, but are not limited to, a medical condition
or major family commitments.

at a reduced load, 2(a) does not apply.

If a student is studying offshore under an arrangement permitted by the
Australian Commonwealth Government, 2(b) does not apply.

10. Selection criterion/criteria:


Academic achievement.7

Academic achievement is determined by the applicants’ equivalent ATAR or
WAM as determined by the University. In exceptional circumstances, the
University may award the scholarship based on a predicted ATAR equivalent
score.

11. Selection process:


By the selection body having regard to the candidates’
academic records.

12. Method of payment:


1. The scholarship is provided as a fee discount towards
eligible course fees.

2. Multi-semester awards will have half the annual value


allocated each semester.

13. Criteria for continuation: The recipient must—

(a) continue to meet the eligibility requirements in clause


9.2 of these conditions;

(b) make satisfactory progress in accordance with the


rule for the course for which the scholarship is award;

(c) maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 60 in


the course for which the scholarship is awarded; and

(d) normally confirm twice annually, in the manner and by


the dates specified by the University, that they continue to
meet the eligibility requirements of the scholarship.

14. Suspension of
scholarship: The scholarship may be suspended (for a maximum of 2
semesters) under exceptional circumstances approved
by Coursework Scholarships and Prizes.

15. Application procedure: 1. Subject to clause 4.1, eligible applicants to the


University will be automatically considered for the
scholarship and do not need to submit a separate

application.
2. Conditions are subject to change from time to time and
may be amended without prior notice.
3. Candidates are considered for an award based on the
current approved conditions at the time of their
application to the University.

16. Student opportunity:

17. Other conditions:


1. The offer of the scholarship must be accepted within
30 days of the offer being made.

2. The offer of the scholarship may be withdrawn at the


University’s discretion if the scholarship is not accepted
by the date specified in the letter of offer.

3. The Chief Marketing Officer of the University may


approve amendments to Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 of
this scholarship.
4. Where a student is eligible for both the UWA
International Student Award and the UWA Global
Excellence Scholarship or other UWA fee reduction
scholarship, the fee reduction of higher value will be
awarded.

18. Publications:
Any thesis, dissertation or other publication resulting from
research undertaken by the recipient while in receipt of
the UWA International Student Award must acknowledge
the support of the scholarship and carry the University
by-line.

Schedule 1: Eligible courses

Eligible undergraduate 1. Eligible undergraduate courses include all


courses: undergraduate bachelor pass, bachelor honours
(integrated), or bachelor double degree courses offered
by the University and published in the UWA Handbook.
2. Notwithstanding an application into an undergraduate
degree course at the University, a candidate is not
eligible for the scholarship if their offer of a place
includes, or is amended to include, an assured pathway
into:
- Master of Pharmacy (51500)
- Doctor of Medicine (90850)
- Doctor of Dental Medicine (90860)

Eligible Combined Bachelor’s Eligible Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degree


and Master’s course include all combined courses offered by the
University and published in the UWA Handbook.

Eligible postgraduate courses: 1. To be eligible to be considered for the scholarship, a


candidate must be applying for an eligible postgraduate
degree (by coursework or coursework and dissertation)
offered by the University and published in the UWA
Handbook..
2. Notwithstanding an application into a postgraduate
degree course by coursework or coursework and
dissertation, candidates applying for quota based
