MONTHWISE FETAL DEVELOPMENT

MONTH LENGTH WEIGHT FETAL GROWTH


1st 4 mm 1.25 gm Zygote formation, between 7-10 days from the fertilization
implantation occurs, amniotic sac, umbilical cord & yolk sac already
beginning to form, eys, nose, ears not visible, small buds that will
develop into limbs form, vertebral column & canal form, CNS
appears
2nd 4 cm 2-12 gm Heart, neural tube, arms, & legs, liver & other major organs begin to
form, Major blood vessels form, by 6th wk heart starts beating,
placenta begins to form eyes, ear, mouth & bones also begin to form,
brain & cranial nerves begin to form, sex organs begin to become
visible, testis begin to descend, Ossification begins

3rd 5.5 cm 30 gm Development of heart & all major organs is complete by the end of
3rd month, Sex organs continue to develop but are still difficult to
differentiate gender, formation of placenta is completed
4rth 22 cm 250 gm Sex is differentiated, Rudimentary kidneys secrete urine, hair and
teeth begin to form, nasal septum & palate close.
5th 30 cm 480 gm Lanugo covers entire body, fetal movements are felt by mother,
Heart sound perceptible by auscultation, ears are developed, finger
prints & foot prints developed
6th 33 cm 1 kg Immune system is developing, lungs developing, alveoli forming, Skin
appears wrinkled, Vernix caseosa appears
7th 35 cm 1.5 kg Bones are fully developed, fetus has an excellent chance of survival,
eyes open and close, testis reaches inguinal canal
8th 45 cm 2 kg There is no any new development, Vigorous fetal movements occur,
fetus is growing & maturing & preparing for life outside the womb.
9th 50 cm 2.5 kg Face & body have a loose wrinkled appearance because of
subcutaneous fat deposit, It is facing head down in preparation of
birth
