Steps Teaching & Learning Activities Remarks
(Duration)
Engage The teacher will present different sentences,
*5 mins and ask the students to observe each sentence.
After 20 seconds, the teacher will ask the
students to analyze the sentence structure and
try to re-arrange jumbled words in the
sentences.
Sentence 1: Gold is time,
Sentence 2: policy is the best honesty.
Sentence 3: What is dinner For our today
Sentence 4: HapPineSs CaN’t bUy moNey
Exploration 1. What have you observed on the sentences
I presented?
2. What do you think is the importance of an
organized sentence with correct
punctuation and the like?
We cannot be able to understand the meaning of
sentences, paragraphs, and stories we are
reading if our thoughts / ideas are unorganized.
Explanation Now that you are a keen observer of errors in
the sentences, what do you think is our lesson
for today? What is the connection of the
sentences I’ve given you to the topic we are
about to discuss?
Our discussion for today is about the properties
of a well-written text. For a text to be well
written, we must always consider and keep in
mind the four properties of a well written text
and these are: organization, coherence and
cohesion, language use and mechanics.

Elaboration We will be discussing organization, coherence

and cohesion of a written text, but for today’s
lesson, we will focus on organization. To fully
understand the lesson, let us define these three
terms.
Organization- this is the logical progression
and completeness of ideas in a text.
Coherence- this means that sentences are
arranged in a logical manner, making them
easily understood by the reader.
Cohesion- means that the overall text has
meaning.
If there is a clear statement of purpose,
position, facts, examples, specific details,
definitions, explanation, justifications, or
opposing viewpoints, ideas are formed and well-
developed

Four Properties of a Well-written Text

1. Organization – logical and accurate
arrange of words / sentences of a written
text.
 3 Parts of a Text:
Introduction - introduce the central idea and
preview your main idea
Body - main ideas are further elaborated and
explained
Conclusion – last part of a text / results /
outcomes
PATTERNS OF ORGANIZATION
1. SIMPLE LISTING
- items are randomly listed in a
series of supporting facts or
details. These supporting
elements are equal value, and
the order in which they are
presented is of no importance.
Changing the order of the items
does not alter the meaning of
the paragraph.
Signal Words for Simple Listing
in addition, another, for example, reveal, some,
also
Example:
When I was a little boy in elementary school,
the neighborhood kids and I all looked forward
to playing so many games in my backyard
during the long summer holidays between
grades. For instance, one of our favorite games
was whiffle ball, a kid's version of baseball. All
we needed was a cheap plastic bat and a cheap
plastic ball and we could entertain ourselves in
the backyard from morning to afternoon.
2. DESCRIPTION
- Details explain the main idea by
providing a mental picture of
situations, objects, or
surroundings; details focus on
sensory or physical data
- Uses words that show size,
shape, texture, color, thickness,
length, feelings
Example:
“The kitchen table is rectangular. Made of a
two-inch-thick piece of oak, its top is covered
with a cloth patterned in dark red and blue
squares against a white background.”
3. DEFINITION
- Also called Statement and
Clarification, a word or concept
is introduced then explained or
described.
Signal Words for Simple Listing
defined as, is, known, the term means, is stated
as, is used to mean, for example, to illustrate, for
instance, such as, sample, specifically, i.e., e.g.
Example:
“Repression is the mind’s power to block
fearful thoughts, impulses, and memories. For
example, a person may repress or forget
painful childhood memories.”
Evaluation Write something about yourself following the
three parts of a written text. (Introduction,
Body, Conclusion)

ASSIGNMENT Have an advance reading on the remaining

patterns of organization to be discussed next
meeting.
a. Chronological Order or Sequence
b. Comparison and Contrast
c. Cause and Effect
