ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION Test

1. The document is a set of questions about electromagnetic induction for a class exam. It covers topics like induced current in loops, self-inductance, Lenz's law, Faraday's law of induction, eddy currents, and more. 2. Key formulas are given for the induced emf in a rod rotating in a magnetic field and for the self-inductance of a long solenoid. 3. Diagrams illustrate examples like a loop moving through a magnetic field and an ac generator.

ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

Class XIi
Time : - 75 min Marks : - 30

1. Two identical loops, one of copper and another of constantan are removed from a magnetic field within the same time
interval. In which loop will the induced current be greater ? 1
2. If the self-inductance of an air core inductor increases from 0.01 mH to 10 mH on introducing an iron core into it, what is
the relative permeability of the core used ?
3. The electric current in a write in the direction from B to A is decreasing. What is the direction of induced current
in the metallic loop kept above the wire as shown in the figure.

1 A B
4. A uniform magnetic field exists normal to the plane of the paper over a small region of space. A rectangular loop of wire
is slowly moved with a uniform velocity across the field as shown. 2

Draw the graph showing the variation of (i) magnetic flux linked with the loop and (ii) the induced e.m.f. in the loop with
time.
5. How are eddy currents produced ? Give two applications of eddy currents. 2
6. State Fleming right hand rule 1
7. What is the induced emf ? Write Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. Express it mathematically 2
8. . A conduction rod of length ‘l’, with one end pivoted, is rotated with a uniform angular speed ‘ω’ in a vertical plane,
normal to a uniform magnetic field ‘B’. Deduce an expression for the emf induced in this rod. 3
9. Drive an expression for the self-inductance of a long solenoid. 3
10. With the help of a neat labelled diagram, explain the principle, construction and working of an a.c generator. 5
11. How does the mutual inductance of a pair of coils change when : 3
(i) the distance between the coils in increased ? (ii) the number of turns in each coil is decreased ? Justify your
answer each case.
12. Obtain the expression for the magnetic energy stored in a solenoid in terms of magnetic field B, area A and length l of the
solenoid. (b) How does this magnetic energy compare with the electrostatic energy stored in a capacitor? 3
13. A horizontal straight wire 10 m long extending from east to west is falling with a speed of 5.0 m/s at right angles to the

horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field, 0.30 × 10 Wb m . 3
(a) What is the instantaneous value of the emf induced in the wire?
(b) What is the direction of the emf?
(c) Which end of the wire is at the higher electrical potential?
