INTRODUCTION

“Open a book to be erudite, experience and train to be wise”, Baclayo (2022).

As the quote says by the great philosopher Niko Baclayo, knowledge and

information gained by the human encephalon only stored temporarily and works

when needed, but the experience is like being programmed and becoming the part

of the human’s kinesthesis. This phenomenon can only be experienced with training

and exposure in the field of training which for us the Bachelor of Science in Civil

Engineering trainees, is the construction sites.

The Student Internship Program of the Philippines helps the trainees

especially students to be exposed in their respective field ahead of their time makes

the students develop competencies such as critical thinking, analyzing problems in

the field, problem solving, speaking skill and leadership skills. Also with this

program, the trainees are prepared to handle pressure in their actual paying job

workplace since they already have experience and knowledge.

As Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering trainees, it is important that we

take note everything we observe on this training, from mistakes and error in the

workplace such as construction of buildings and wrongdoings of laborers. This

observation of ours will be brought with us until the time we are the site manager or

engineer, since this field of work, even the little details is crucial for the sake of

human safety and the world’s prosperity.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

AND DOCUMENTATIONS
FIRST WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(July 4, 2022 – July 8, 2022)

On the first day of the On – Job – Training, We, the group assigned for Site

Inspection leaded by the supervisor of the field which is the head engineer of the

Eastern Visayas States University Campus, Engr. Millan Estorninos, went for a

round trip to the construction site that are under construction in the campus. The

first construction site we did visit was in front of the reconstruction of woodworking

building as the new admin building. With loud noise of jackhammer in the

background, Engr. Millan discuss to us the do’s and don’ts in visiting the

construction site. After that we walked through the hallway then we stop in the

middle to observe the construction of EVSU water system that was happening at

that moment in there. We then continued to walk until the construction of internal

road near the women’s technology building exit gate, where the excavation was

going on at that moment. Lastly, we stopped in the building near the graduation

building, where Engr. Millan, together with the head of Geodetic department which

is Engr. Gab discuss the importance of personal protective equipment and life

experience of the danger they encounter of not properly wearing those. Engr. Gab

also discuss the common error in field (human error, natural error, equipment error)

and what it applies in construction. He also discusses a little about PERT-CPM and

estimates.

On the next day, Led by Architect Caitlin, Engr. Cidro and Engr. Hannah, we

did visit the construction of internal road near the men’s technology building, where

architect Caitlin discuss the parts that present in the road construction. Architect

Caitlin also discuss the importance of the dowel. We did also visit the reconstruction

of woodworking building where we met the site engineer in there which is Engr.

Yap. He discusses and explain to us what is the construction of the site all about

and their plan for the project. The project was making a new building while

preserving the existing building due to its historical value.

The third day was the most important day before the individual group to site

visits on their own. It's because Engr. Millan discusses the problem and mistakes of

the existing and the under-construction sites and building in the campus. The intern

should know first the underlying problem and the cause before we recklessly

inspect and visits the site. The first site was construction of internal road near the

maritime building where you can see obviously that the edge was not straight.

There are many underlying problems and error in this site that Engr. Millan

discusses. Next is the finished sidewalk near the architecture building where it was

unaesthetically pleasing, and it looks like it was not done properly. Engr. Millan told

us the story on what happened during that time that it was under construction. Then

we did visit the abandoned building of Asia Pacific. The building was intriguing due

that you can see obviously the error and failures. The construction was stopped due

to these issues. According to Engr. Millan, the building won’t be demolished but will

be redesigned or retrofit with new calculations to cover up the failure and make it

sturdy and safe as possible.

On the fourth day, the student interns were grouped to be assigned to

focus on one site. Our group was assigned into Asia Pacific Building. We visit the

abandoned building to see clearly what was the revised plan given to us and is

trying to imply and to have knowledge what to put materials for our estimates. We

discuss deliberately and debate in that matter. The student interns were also

grouped to be assigned for another assignment, which I was in the group for

improving of the site development plan given to us in Sketchup app.

On the fifth day, our group visit the abandoned building again and went

upstairs to check the ceiling and existing truss. Our group noticed that there was no

gutter built in there and the supposed to be the location of gutter was covered

entirely by wall. We then discuss everything that is present in there and how we can

estimate it. The group for Site development plan view the existing project created in

the Sketchup app to discuss and carefully analyze what to add and how we will add

them.
SECOND WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(July 11, 2022 – July 15, 2022)

First day of the second week of the On Job Training, We the Asia Pacific

assigned group, equipped with Personal Protective Equipment, did a site inspection

for the four construction sites that are under construction in the campus. The first

site we did visit was the construction of Internal Road near the maritime building

where the workers are preparing the flattening machine, probably to flatten the land.

We then continued our site visit to the construction of woodworking building. There

was no Engineer present at this time, and I noticed that the workers there are doing

a risky job such as demolition and clearing but has no proper Personal Protective

Equipment unlike us the inspector who are equipped with proper Personal

Protective Equipment from Top to bottom. We then went to the construction of road

near the women’s building exit gate where the excavation was already finished and

there was no workers and management present in there. The site was risk of

hazard and there was no clear sign, judging by it, anyone can fall in the excavation

site at night or no visibility. The group also visits the construction of EVSU water

system where excavation was ongoing, and they are planning to install a new pipe.

My other belonging group which is assigned to make an RCD program also works

for the algorithm on analysis of beams, columns, and footings.

Second day of the second week of the On Job Training, We the Asia Pacific

assigned group, again did a site inspection for the four-construction site. The

construction of internal road in the maritime building planned activity for this day

was delayed due to their little road roller was stuck and need a large crane or

something to lift it up. We met with one of the workers in there and talked about

their plan. It seems that they are trying to finish it as soon as possible due that rainy

season will coming soon that there will be no time to dry the land for the preparation

of filling of concrete. For the first time, we took a glimpse the inside of the

woodworking construction. For the information of the reader, we were prohibited in

the past days to enter the internal construction of woodworking construction due

that we still don’t have a proper Personal Protective Equipment and it is dangerous

for us to went inside. Large columns and plenty of footings were seen in there. We

also took a glimpse the watery soil of the campus that was excavated for the

installation of footing. The scene inside was fascinating because it is like you are

watching the orchestra where the workers are working there in sync. After the site

visits, we discussed and estimate the revised plan for the Asia Pacific. We managed

to finished the initial estimation of the numbers of angle bars, rivets, meters of

backer rod, number of screw and number of aluminum cladding.

Third day of the second week of the On Job Training, was a productive day

for our group because we managed to finished the assigned estimates which is the

gutter for the rebuilding of Asia Pacific and was ready to present any day to our

supervisor which is Engr. Millan. Since our supervisor was still busy, we did site

inspection for the mean time. We stopped at the front of the library to observe the

Electrical Engineering people fixing and welding the sewer drainage of EVSU. We

met with an Electrical Engineer/Professor in there and we were questioned and give

us a lesson about our profession. Although we were in a hot seat by him, he still

gives us information and lessons that we won’t forget. Also, he answered our inquiry

regarding for our estimates. for example: The difference of substandard and good

product for welding rod, the name of the equipment in there, the proper way of

estimating, where he jokingly said that there should always a percent for everything.

He also told us what they are doing in there. The downside is he always question us

first, making us intense and dumbfounded. But it was enjoyable. Bringing the new

knowledge we acquired from the Electrical Engineer professor, our group

continuously estimates and revised with the new calculation.

On the fourth day of the second week of the On Job Training, since our

supervisor was still busy, we cannot yet present our finished estimates, so we did

site inspection. All construction site was busy this day, in the construction of internal

road near the maritime building, the workers were filling gravel for sub-base, there
were also workers excavating that is actually not in the plan, but they have a make

sense reason which is it’s for the water to flow for their convenience in constructing.

They are also flattening the land. Our group stays for several minutes to observe

and learn with their work. After plenty of minutes our group went inside the Asia

Pacific building to check again the building. We did have a discussion/debate in

there for some time about the mistakes and the possible fixes that can be made in

there based on our observation. We also measure some angle bars in there for our

curiosity only. We then continued our site inspection to the construction of the

campus water system where they are located this day in front of the navy

headquarters of the campus. We spent a lot of time in the site due that we met a

good talker foreman who was assigned for the construction. He taught us a lot

mostly on hydraulics, estimates and his strategy on contracting. He first told us their

planned in construction where they are installing pipe and installing a gate valve for

the main waterline of all the area of the campus. Then he taught us his technique of

estimation and give us a life lesson that being a contractor is a gamble. Sometimes

you win and sometimes you lose a lot of money. Another life lesson that we learned

is that engineers don’t mostly corrupts, it’s just politicians are always getting a

percent, making the project compromise and use substandard for the engineer or

the company to have profit. But the life lesson I did like the most was that to never

exchange the human’s life over money, meaning don’t compromise building where

there were people life is at risk. He also gives us information about why pipe from

the main line is big and it getting small when it reach to household. We also learned

the technique for a good installation of pipes is to check first if the land is rocky or

not. Because if it’s rough or rocky, we need to put sand for not sharp edges of rocks

or others to damage the pipes. Our group learned a lot from and him and forever we

are grateful.

On the fifth day of the second week of the On Job Training, the engineer of

the reconstruction of the woodworking building which is Engr. Yap, introduces us

one of his equipment which is the self-leveling laser. The equipment was so cool
and futuristic where you can level accurately. The good thing about this new

equipment is that it even works even the sun is up where sometimes laser is not

visible. One of our batch intern was assigned to hold something like a device that it

beeps where it tracks by the laser with a limit distance of 50 meters. The assigned

intern went to the other side of the self-leveling laser with at least 6 – 8 meter

distance. We, the student interns that present in there was amaze when the beep

that our classmates was holding was steadily beep meaning that it can even detect

level even with that distance. We also watched one of the workers in woodworking

making a stirrups. The day was also the time where we present our initial finished

estimates to our supervisor which is Engr. Millan. We discussed and defended our

works and present source where we get from the estimation and calculation. Engr.

Millan corrected our work and change our other data to proper one. We also learned

the importance of factor of safety, the kilogram of the angle bars and how to

compute it and a lot more. Our group discusses what to do and what to estimate

next before going home.

THIRD WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(July 18, 2022 – July 22, 2022)

First day of the Third week of the On the Job Training, Our group did a site

inspection. In the reconstruction of woodworking building, upon checking the site,

we realized that there is a stirrup inside a stirrup. We asked the engineer of the

construction, which is Engr. Yap about why or what instances the designer would

put a stirrup inside a stirrup. Engr. Yap explained and showed the plan to back up

the explanation. It was because the design of Engr. Gab which the longer of span of

the column to column makes it critical and need to put more reinforcement, so it

won’t deflect or bend. Engr. Yap also discuss to us a lot of information about the

plan for example about why they use large steel bars and why the footings were big.

Our group also report to Architect Caitlin to help us with our estimation in

preparation for the next presentation to Engr. Millan.

Second day of the Third week of the On-the-Job Training, there was really

not much going on even in construction sites. When our group visited it there was

no workers present at that moment maybe it is because we visited at their break

time. There’s a lot of improvement from the last time we visited. In the construction

of internal road near the maritime building, the subbase filling was already finished

and ready for filling of concrete. In the construction of internal road near the

women’s building exit gate it was also already filled with sub-base. In the

construction of campus water system, the excavated area was already long

compare yesterday meaning the workers are fast on their works, and lastly in the

reconstruction of woodworking building, the to be demolished part was already

done.

Third day of the Third week of the On-the-Job Training, All the student

interns was excited for this day because it is the day, we will be going to witness

how they will install the pipes in the construction of campus water system and also

the day for pouring of concrete in construction of internal road near the men’s
technology building. In the construction of the campus water system, the workers

leaded by their foreman, did a demo for us on the proper and their technique of

installing pipes. After measuring the pipe, they insert a circular rubber in the

entrance of the pipe for lock and then they spread margarine in the mouth of the

pipe. The purpose of the margarine is that to let the next pipe slides and penetrate

or it to connect. Also, they used margarine because it is non-toxic unlike other

lubricants and can only be washed away by water. With the workers at the end of

the other pipe they gently with a little force, push the pipe and secure it locks. In the

construction of internal road near the men’s technology building, the pre-mixed

concrete truck arrived as early as expected. As we observe after the truck filled

concrete in the road, the workers spread it and flatten it, they keep doing it until all

the concrete is filled. We also noticed that they didn’t install the dowels properly.

Fourth day of the Third week of the On-the-Job Training, Our group assigned

for Site Development plan in Sketchup app, started doing the task. We first analyze

what to put and what is the best design based on the request of our supervisor in

this assignment which is Engr. Hannah. With the help of the built in 3D warehouse

of the Sketchup app, we managed to put existing 3D model to the plan except for

the Police Station. We can’t find a good realistic police station in the warehouse, so

as an aspiring engineers, we created one. With the help of the Autocad app, we first

layout the floor plan so it will be easy to erect in the Sketchup app. We make it looks

like the standard design of local police station here in the Philippines.

Last day of the Third week of the On-the-Job Training, our group did a site

inspection where we visits the construction of internal road near Men’s Technology

building. With the finished road that already filled with concrete, the workers there

are cutting the concrete lengthwise with 4” deep which they called the contraction

joint. It is for preventing large cracks since concrete tends to shrink or reduce in size

when it is starts hardening making small cracks to large cracks.

FOURTH WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(July 25, 2022 – July 29, 2022)

First day of the fourth week of the On the job training was the day of the

comprehensive exam for specialization for incoming 4th year.

On the Second day of the fourth week of the On the Job training, Our group

did a site inspection where we visited the construction of internal road near the

men's technology building. In the site we only saw a lone worker removing the form

and doing "tiktik" for the "extension bar" to connect the left road to the to be

constructed right side of the road. The lone worker explained to us the plan for this

day and what he was doing and the whereabouts of the other workers. In the

construction of road near the women's technology building exit gate, our group saw

and helped one of our batch student interns hammering a bar to the ground as it

was the assignment for them since they were assigned in that area.

On the third day of the fourth week of the On the Job training, Our group was

summoned by our supervisor which is Engr. Millan to present our latest data and

estimates for the reconstruction of Asia Pacific building. We reported our latest

calculations of angle bars to be used and the method and way we used to estimates

for it. We also reported our latest estimation of the number of welding rod and the

type to be used. Well as a beginner of estimation, we have somehow progress with

our estimates compare to the initial estimates we present to Engr. Millan. He also

corrected our works and input it into excel for the Bill of Materials. He also added

some materials as assignment to be estimated by our group and to be presented

next meeting.

On the fourth day of the fourth week of the On-the-Job training, our group

decided to do visit the sites. We noticed that the workers for the construction of the

campus water system was in the site of the construction of internal road near men’s

technology building. It was because the supervisor which is Engr. Millan decided

that for the workers for the construction of the campus water system to prioritize
installing pipes near in that area as it was already excavated so that it won’t be

excavated again, and they will save time and money.

On the fifth day of the fourth week of the On-the-Job training, Our group for

RCD program works to create a program of analysis of beam in excel.

FIFTH WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(August 1, 2022 – August 5, 2022)

On the first day of the fifth week of the on the job training, our group, the

assigned for Asia pacific building together with the group assigned for construction

of internal road near the men’s technology building, met with the foreman of the

construction of the campus water system. the foreman taught us a lot from the

whole plan of water system in the Eastern Visayas Eastern university to the proper

way of estimating. First, with the foreman on the lead, he guides us to the back of

the science building, the location where the plan was pertaining, and the location of

the big water tank will be going to be installed. Exposed pipes or host was visible in

that area that according to him is not safe and it needs to be buried because it will

be exposed and prone to natural and human factors such as tripping or weather that

will affect the quality of the host or pipe. The plan will start with excavation that will

be done after they pay first to Department of Environment and Natural Resources to

cut the massive tree that was erect there. He discusses to us the cost of cutting the

trees and the process. He also teaches us their techniques of installing gutter,

where according to him, if the area was an area full of trees, the gutter should have

a cover for the falling leaves not to clogged, and there will always be a proper

measurement and angle for flashing and gutter. He also taught us the difference of

discs in angle grinder and how to estimates labor for our estimates.

On the second day of the fifth week of the on-the-job training, All the student

interns attended the online webinar which is hosted by Engr. Gillesania, a renowned

and famous engineer in the Philippines and owner of one of the reviewer here in our

country. He discusses everything in preparation for the board exam.

On the third day of the fifth week of the on-the-job training, our group for the

RCD program of analysis of beam works with excel. We finished the code for

analysis of beam for the meantime. Our group for Asia Pacific estimates encodes

for the calculation of our new data acquired estimates.

On the fourth day of the fifth week of the on-the-job training, we did site

inspection and visits the construction of internal road in Men’s technology building.

The worker there was doing clearing for the right side of the road since it is a two-

way road. Our group for RCD program also works for our program in excel.

On the fifth day of the fifth week of the on-the-job training, Our group work for

the site development plan and tries to finish it at least this day. Our group also for

Asia pacific building estimates, helped each other to calculate and work for not yet

estimated materials.
SIXTH WEEK OF THE ON – JOB – TRAINING

(August 8, 2022 – August 12, 2022)

First day of the last week of the on job training, we presented our revised

calculation of our estimates in Asia pacific to Engr. Millan. We discuss on how we

come up with estimation of the hours of job of the laborers. Engr. Millan also

corrected us about the other costs and show us the video on the welding and

cutting to determine the proper way of it. We also did visit the sites for inspection.

Second day of the last week of the on-the-job training, Our group for RCD

program on analysis of beam double time on working since the day for demo is fast

approaching. We somehow finish the UI of our program, but we are still far from

complete finished. It is also the day we finished making the Site development plan

on the Sketchup app and submitted it to Engr. Hannah.

Third day of the last week of the on-the-job training, our group for Asia

Pacific estimates encode for the new data and calculation to be presented to Engr.

Millan. We then present and Engr. Millan corrected a lot our work especially on

cladding. On this day we solely focus on the aluminum cladding. He also questioned

the error and missing details in the plan. He then gives us assignment to contact the

Architect of the plan to redesigned with his suggestion. We then went to the

architect which is Architect Anonas and explained everything and she give us all the

details we need.

On the fourth day of the last week of the on-the-job training, all of the student

interns are busy doing the RCD program of analysis of beam, since the demo is

tomorrow of this day. Our group went to Engr. Cidro to ask and guide us our

problems and request regarding with the program. Engr. Cidro taught us a lot about

coding in the excel and suggests some better ways to do it.

On the last day of the on-the-job training, the leaders of every group

assigned to sites was summoned by Engr. Millan to his office. As the acting leader

for the group of Asia Pacific I went for the meeting. The meeting was all about what
happened and the business in the Tacloban Port Area. He gives task to every one

of us to be discussed to every group, task about designing an additional port in the

shoreline at the back of the old Eastern Visayas Medical Center Hospital and near

the Tacloban Port Area. On the afternoon, our group of RCD program in analysis of

beam presents or demo our program to Engr. Cidro. The program was fine, and we

execute it properly except of one mistake. We forgot that it needs to recalculate if

the compression does not yield. Engr. Cidro also teach us how to shift solve in excel

and other code that we need. Our group for Asia pacific again site visits for the last

time. We visit the Asia pacific building in attempting to measure the elevation,

unfortunately, it was hard without proper tools. I share the information I got in the

meeting and discuss it to my group for us to come up with a plan or an idea what to

design in Tacloban Port Area. Lastly, we planned when and how we will measure

the elevation of the abandoned Asia pacific building.
