The Visible Parts of Chicken and Swine

I. Introduction:
The chicken is an interesting creature from the structural view point. It possess feathers, breast bone,
spurs and lack of teeth. It has a comb which separates it from other species of birds. A knowledge of
visible parts will contribute to a proper understanding of the chicken, its peculiarities, identification and
classification. In swine, the importance of knowing the external parts by students in swine husbandry
cannot be over emphasized. The parts of the animal should be well known to students especially during
selection and judging because external parts which determine the real make-up of the animal have direct
relation to the internal quality. Furthermore, modifications on the various external parts have bearing on
the classification or grouping of animal into different types, breed varieties or strain. When marketing of
animals especially in the Philippines. It is usually the external parts or appearance is the basis of the
purchase or sale as the case may be.

II. Objectives:
1. To acquaint the student with the various external parts of chicken and swine.
2. To be able to appreciate the importance of knowing the visible parts of the chicken and swine.
3. To identify the types and breeds of swine as well as in chicken including varieties and strain.

III. Procedure:
1. Take a selfie (proof) and picture with an actual male and female chicken as well as swine and label all
its parts.
2. List down the difference between male and female chickens and swine.
Answer: The males have pointed feathers around the neck, back, and tail; in females these feathers have
round ends. If the chickens are purebreds, the coloring patterns of the males and females will also differ.
In addition, males typically have larger combs and wattles and large spurs on the back of the shank.
As from birth, female pigs tended to be heavier than male pigs until 12 months of age. However,
when mature at 12 months of age, the male pigs tended to be taller with large body length, pointing at a
better body conformation. If looking for the urogenital opening. On females, this opening is located near
the anus. On males, the opening is located near the umbilical cord. If your pig is female, you should also
note that urogenital papilla is present near the genital opening.
3. In chicken, study the types of feathers found in the wings, back, abdomen, neck, tail and thigh.

4. Take a close-up picture and label the different parts of typical feathers.

IV. Questions for study and discussions:

1. Discuss briefly the importance of knowing the visible parts of chicken and swine.
Answer: Meat and egg production of chicken highly depends on their body size and structure. So, it is
very important to have good knowledge about external parts of chicken with the introduction of their
breeds. Because we can define productive and non-productive breeds by their body size and parts.
Overall, the presence of various qualities in the external parts indicates the value, health, and condition of
an animal. This means that animal producers not only know the names of the parts but they also know the
qualities that should be evident upon visual examination of the parts.

2. What are the primary functions of feathers and comb?

Answer: The Comb of a chicken functions as its cooling system. Chickens do not sweat like humans. The
chicken cools itself by circulating its blood throughout its comb and wattles. Feathers allow birds to fly,
but they also help them show off, blend in, stay warm, and keep dry.

3. How does chicken differ from other species of birds?

Answer: A chicken is a bird. One of the features that differentiate it from most other birds is that it has a
comb and two wattles. The comb is the red appendage on the top of the head, and the wattles are the two
appendages under the chin. These are secondary sexual characteristics and are more prominent in the
male.
