Task Name & Number Semester 1, Task 3 - Ancient Historical Personality - Empathy and
Perspective Task

Assessment Summary Choose an ancient historical personality and create an account of an

event in their life from their perspective; then, create a differing account of
the same event from another person at the time.

This task is assessing your ability to show empathy, describe different

perspectives, and also account for change in a society.

Submission - Format Can be done in a variety of formats - attach to the assignment and submit

Limits (time, length, Equivalent of 500 words (if done as a video or audio recording, submit the
etc.) written script as well)

Referencing You will need to ensure that you are correctly acknowledging your research and
sources throughout your task. You can use tools such as Citethisforme and other
referencing tools.

Using Harvard style referencing, you will need to include:

 Task Details – Ancient Historical Personality Task

You can choose any real (preferably famous) person from one of the
Step 1 following ancient societies:
Egypt, Greece, Rome
Choose a India, China
personality
To make it interesting, choose someone unique - but make sure there is
some information available before diving in!
BE UNIQUE
Some examples include:
Egypt: Ramses the Great, Tutankhamun, Cleopatra, Hatshepsut
Greece: Aristotle, Euclid, Hippocrates, Alexander the Great, Queen
Gorgo, Artemisia
Rome: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Pompey the Great, Marcus Antonius,
Agrippina the Younger, Livia Drusilla, Spartacus
India: Ashoka the Great, Siddharta Gautama (Buddha), Chandragupta
Maurya, Queen Nayanika, Prabhavatigupta
China: Emperor Qin, Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan), Sun Tzu,
Confucius (Kongfuzi), Laozi, Kublai Khan (Hubilie), Empress Wu Zetian,
Li Qingzhao

You are going to write accounts from two differing ‘first person’
Step 2 perspectives - so you need to choose a form that might be used by
people to put forward their views or personal beliefs.
Choose a
communication Some of the people you choose may not have been literate (couldn’t
form read or write) but we will ignore that for now!

You can choose a form that is relevant to the time period, or one that is
anachronistic (not from the time period).
BE CREATIVE
Examples include:

● Diary entries
● Letters or emails
● Social media pages and posts (e.g. instagram, facebook,
twitter)
● Proclamations or edicts (these might be engraved on a tablet
or on a monument)
● Youtube announcement or video cast (in costume if you like -
go on!)
● Audio announcement or podcast
● Newsletter or editorial in a newspaper
● A speech or announcement
 Choose an event from the person’s life that may be contested or

Choose an event
or events which - it could be a war/conflict, a family issue, a monument they built,

BE INTERESTING
It may be a series of events or even a summary of the person’s
life/achievements.

Write a 200 word account about the event/s from Step 3, from the
Step 4 famous person’s perspective.
Describe the The trick here is to use empathy. Try to imagine yourself in that
event/s from your person’s position. What did they do? Why did they do it? What
famous person’s emotions or influences were driving them? Who were they trying to
perspective impress or influence? What was the context of their historical time?

You can use modern language or try to write it in a style more suited
to the time/place.
BE EMPATHETIC
For the word count: think of your format. If it’s social media, maybe
3-4 short posts with photos. If it’s a youtube video, write a script first
and present that with the video and/or add subtitles.

YOU MUST INCLUDE: at least one visual source (a photo, picture,

sketch) relevant to your account.

YOU MUST ALSO: refer to how you or the event brought change to
the society.

YOU MUST ALSO: describe your person’s role and/or group they
belong to in society

Now - choose another person from the time who may have seen things
Step 5 differently. This doesn’t have to be a famous person. It could be an
imagined victim or rival or citizen of that society.

Again, use empathy. Do they agree with the first account? Why/why
not? What is driving them? How have they been affected by the
famous person’s actions? What biases or prejudices might they hold?

You can use the same communication form or even try something
different for the response.

Finally, write a 150 word rationale.

Step 6 A rationale is when you are asked to give the reasoning or justification
for an action or a choice you make.
