Week 5: Business Environment Analysis 2

Fall 2020

This assignment is worth 13% of your final course grade.

The following assignment is the second of three Business Environment Analyses you will complete in this course.
They each follow the same structure, though the content specifics change. Feel free to bring your questions
regarding this assignment to the class Q&A session (on-line Thursday or Saturday).

This is an exercise in research for a company. Review your team worksheet number two. On that basis:

1. Draw a mind-map of the global, technological, or political issues (3 topic areas—choose one)
confronting your company (Refer to the mind-mapping guidelines in week 1 and other information
sources). Try to be relatively exhaustive regarding how that issue is related to your company. Provide
the components at the first level and the relevant details of the component at a subsequent level.
Identify any interrelationships between details or components. For example if there are technological
issues, specify what types of technological issues such as AI, hackers, cloud services, and then for each
one of those, what the issues are that make it relevant to the company such as expanded service,
competitors, customer demand, technological obsolescence, high cost, or anything else the company
would need to take into account when dealing with that issue.

While you may consult with other team members on this part of the project, each team member must
develop their own mind-map.

2. Identify what you think is a critical component of your company’s environment (one component from
your mind-map, either an issue or a detail). There might be many critical components, but for this
exercise you must choose one.

3. Find three high quality academic sources (use the UCW library) that help you understand that one
component. (Use the standards for high quality you learned in Week 2. Be quick—ensure no more than
20 minutes of research for each article. More than 20 minutes finding each high quality article suggests
poor research skills on the part of the student.) Note: Your articles should not directly refer to your
source company—this is external research to help your company.

4. Briefly summarize the content of each academic source in your own words. Make sure you specify
whether it is a theory or research article and in either case, what it concludes. (maximum of 100 words
each) Read the materials on how to summarize an academic document in the week weblisting.

5. Write a very brief memo style (not APA essay form. Use the “Ingre-Written Image Tips” and the
“Developing a Business Recommendation” guides for help) report to the presumed head of your
company (actual CEO or relevant Vice-President or senior manager). In this report:

 Identify the company’s issue you think is most significant. This should include at least a two-line
rationale for your choice of issue.
 Explain your research—why you looked at the research you did and what you learned about the
company’s situation from the research. Make sure you identify the authors of the research you
read as part of explaining what you found (no APA citation necessary beyond author
identification).

BUSI 601
 Develop one or more recommendations on how the company could respond to that issue
effectively based on the research you completed. (For each recommendation ensure there is a
logical rationale)

This report should be no longer than 350 words. (Note, it is much better to exceed the report length
than to not say something you think must be said. You lose fewer marks for going over the length than
for not saying something important—use your judgement.)

6. Prepare a submission to Turnitin as follows with Word .doc or .docx output, or .rtf output (not a .pdf):

 Cover page in APA style

 Your report in MEMO form
 Appendix 1: Mind-map (could be a drawing, a jpeg from a photograph, or an insert from mind-
mapping software (for example Coggle). Ensure the details of the mind-map are legible in your
final document.
 Appendix 2: Summary of Article 1 with an APA reference
 Appendix 3: Summary of Article 2 with an APA reference
 Appendix 4: Summary of Article 3 with an APA reference
 Appendix 5: APA reference list of all sources used in developing your report and mind-map

7. Submit the completed materials to the Turnitin DropBox for Week 5 by 23:59 Pacific on Sunday.

Grading:
This assignment will be marked out of 100 pts. as follows:

 Up to 5 pts. for the quality of the problem identification.

 Up to 20 pts. for the quality of the mind-map.
 Up to 10 pts. for the quality of the research explanation.
 Up to 19 pts. for the quality of the recommendations & rationale.
 Up to 21 pts. for the quality of the article summaries (7 pts each)
 Up to 15 pts. for the quality of the academic sources. (5 pts each)
 Up to 10 pts. for the quality of the English and proper document style—think of the type and
quality of document you would submit to your boss!
o APA style citations and references are essential for all sources.
o Note that negative points are possible for serious errors.

Within one week of completion of the exercise you should receive through your MYUCW portal a grade
sheet that identifies how well you have done.
